ETSI unveils new group on non-Internet Protocol networking addressing 5G services - ITREALMS

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has unveiled its new group on non-Internet Protocol networking addressing for Fifth Generation (5G) services, reports ITREALMS.

This ETSI said entails the creation of a new Industry Specification Group addressing Non-IP Networking (ISG NIN).
ITREALMS gathered that the kick-off-meeting for ISG-NIN took place on 25 March and John Grant, BSI, was elected as the ISG Chair, and Kevin Smith, Vodafone, was elected as ISG Vice Chair.

“With the increasing challenges placed on modern networks to support new use cases and greater connectivity, Service Providers are looking for candidate technologies that may serve their needs better than the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based networking used in current systems.
ITREALMS equally gathered that ISG-NIN, according to Claire Boyer, intends to develop standards that define technologies to make more efficient use of capacity, have security by design, and provide lower latency for live media.

In 2015, 
ITREALMS recalled, several mobile operators identified problems with the TCP/IP-based technology used in the Fourth Generation (4G) networks, which included the complex and inefficient use of spectrum resulting from adding mobility, security, quality-of-service, and other features to a protocol that was never designed for them.

In addition,
ITREALMS gathered, the subsequent fixes and workarounds designed to overcome these problems themselves incur increased cost, latency, and greater power-consumption. TCP/IP was therefore deemed as non-optimal for the more advanced 5G services.

Further, ETSI noted that its Industry Specification Group on Next Generation Protocols (ISG NGP), created in 2015, had the mission to analyse these problems and suggest alternative solutions. ISG NGP identified candidate technologies that would address the issues directly, dramatically reducing header sizes, per-packet processing, and latency experienced by live media, while remaining compatible with the current Internet and with newer technologies such as SDN and MPLS. ISG NGP also published a set of Key Performance Indicators that allow an objective assessment of the ability of networking protocols to meet operators’ needs.

“Today, we see the evolution of ISG NGP in a new group dedicated to the specification of alternative technologies to better serve the new 5G applications, as well as being more efficient and easier to manage, with lower CapEx and OpEx, when used for current applications.

“It is expected that the work of ISG NIN will be applicable initially to private mobile networks such as factory automation, and then expanded to public systems, both in the Core network and eventually end to end including the Radio elements.

“The group’s first output will be a Report detailing the shortcomings of TCP/IP, and how the new alternative system would overcome those shortcomings. ISG NIN will also work on specifying how the technologies initially identified by ISG NGP will form the basis of the new protocols, as well as creating a framework for testing the efficiency and effectiveness of the new protocols, including over radio,” a press statement from ETSI available to ITREALMS read.

“I’m really happy to have been entrusted with the Chairmanship of this group. Finding new protocols for internet more suitable to the 5G era was essential. Big data and mission-critical systems such as industrial control, intelligent vehicles. and remote medicine cannot be addressed the best way with current TCP/IP-based networking” says John Grant, Chair of ISG NIN.

“The IP stack and OSI layer model have undeniably enabled global connectivity – but since they originated in the 1970s, their design reflects the demands and capabilities of that era. Reassessing the fundamental design principles of network protocols offers the opportunity to deliver performance, security and efficiency gains for 2020 access networks and use cases, and may be achieved with simplification rather than expensive add-ons. The work of ETSI ISG NIN, in co-operation with industry organizations, can provide operators with a cutting-edge protocol suite to add to their service portfolio” says Kevin Smith, Vice Chair of ISG NIN.

Internet of Things: ETSI unveils cyber security for consumer - ITREALMS

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has unveiled a technical specification aimed at solving all security challenges associated with consumer Internet of Things (IoT), reports ITREALMS.

The documentary tagged ‘Cyber Security for Consumer Internet of Things (IoT),’ and made available to ITREALMS, ETSI noted in the introduction that as more devices in the home connect to the internet, the cyber security of the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a growing concern, especially for consumers.

“People entrust their personal data to an increasing number of online devices and services. Products and appliances that have traditionally been offline are now becoming connected and need to be designed to withstand cyber threats,” part of the specification read.

The 16-page documentary produced by ETSI Technical Committee Cyber Security (CYBER), ITREALMS reports, brings together widely considered good practice in security for internet-connected consumer devices in a set of high-level outcome-focused provisions.

The objective of the present document, ITREALMS gathered, was to support all parties involved in the development and manufacturing of consumer IoT with guidance on securing their products.

Additionally, ITREALMS reports that the provisions are outcome-focused, rather than prescriptive, giving organizations the flexibility to innovate and implement security solutions appropriate for their products.

Further, ITREALMS reports that the document is not intended to solve all security challenges associated with consumer IoT. Rather, the focus is on the technical controls and organizational policies that matter most in addressing the most significant and widespread security shortcomings.

ETSI emphasised that as many IoT devices and services process and store personal data, the present document could help in ensuring that these are compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) [i.7].

Also, this document, ETSI said, could help organizations implement a future EU common cybersecurity certification framework as proposed in the Cybersecurity Act [i.13] and the proposed IoT Cybersecurity Improvement Act in the United States.

ETSI partners IQC on safe cryptography - ITREALMS

ITREALMS:
A three-day workshop has been planned by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in partnership with Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and Chongqing University will take place in Beijing, China, reports ITREALMS.

This forms part of the 6th ETSI/IQC Quantum Safe Cryptography Workshop, slated for 06 through 08 November 2018 at the Beijing International Convention Center, Beijing.

This three-day workshop, ITREALMS gathered, will bring together diverse players in the quantum-safe cybersecurity community to facilitate the knowledge exchange and collaboration required to transition cyber infrastructures and business practices to make them safe in an era with quantum computers.

 For instance, Executive Track, designed for business leaders, will outline the state of the quantum threat and its mitigation for a C-level audience including CEOs, CTOs and CISOs.

While on 7th November, the Technical Track, designed for members of the business, government and research communities with a stake in cryptographic standardization on a global scale.

ETSI takes on 1st MEC Hackathon @Edge Computing Congress - ITREALMS

The first-ever Multi-Access Computing (MEC) hackathon has been slated for the Edge Computing Congress in Berlin during the last quarter of this year, reports ITRealms.

The event being organized by the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) will hold on 18 and 19 of September 2018, in Berlin, and co-located with Knect365’s event at the annual Edge Computing Congress on 18-20 September.

The ETSI MEC (Multi-Access Computing) Hackathon, ITRealms reports, will challenge developers to create in-vehicle infotainment applications featuring Virtual or Augmented Reality and to demonstrate how they can leverage Multi-Access Edge Computing and networking to improve performance and user experience.

Hosted by KNect365, the event is supported by key players in the ISG MEC community:  the technical infrastructure is supported by Intel, Huawei, Saguna and Viavi, and prizes are courtesy of KNect365 and Vodafone. Ip3 and Ismb also form part of the organization committee.

Registration, ITRealms gathered, is open and free of charge with deadline fixed on 10 July 2018. Team size is 5 members (maximum), while registration notification to the selected teams will be done by 30 July 2018.

ETSI, 3GPP to jointly exhibit @CCW 2018


The CCW, ITRealms gathered has been slated to take place on 15 – 17 May, Messe Berlin ExpoCenter City, in Berlin, Germany.

Whereas, ETSI is an independent, not-for-profit, standardization organization in the telecommunications industry in Europe, headquartered in Sophia-Antipolis, France, with worldwide projection. The 3GPP is a collaborative project aimed at developing globally acceptable specifications for third generation (3G) mobile systems, thus catering for a large majority of the telecommunications networks in the world. 

ITRealms reports that CCW will include up-to-the-minute policy, insight and intelligence alongside real-world case studies and best practice advice. This year will showcase the latest technological innovations from more than 200 organisations, making it the biggest CCW yet.

ETSI and 3GPP are actively shaping the Critical Communications World 2018 conference programme and attendees will be given the opportunity to hear presentations from both organizations. More information is available on the full programme of conference sessions.

ETSI, OBE partner on FinTech certification



The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and Open Banking Europe (OBE) have entered into a partnership to offer the public financial services with qualified certificates, reports ITRealms.

The event also known as the eIDAS Meets PSD2 workshop, tends to faciliate securing access to financial services with qualified certificates.

This will take place on 20 March 2018 at ETSI Headquarters in Sophia Antipolis (South of France). 

ETSI is developing a standard for the use of EU Qualified Certificates, as defined in Regulation (EU) No 910/201 (eIDAS), profiled to meet the requirements for securing communications between payment services under Directive (EU) 2015/2366 (PSD2).

This event is to explain the PSD2 Qualified Certificates as specified by ETSI in TS 119 495 and discuss its usage with eIDAS trust service providers and PSD2 payment service providers.

ETSI plans Cybersecurity Certification

Due to the proposed EU Regulation called the 'Cybersecurity Act', the European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) is planning cybersecurity certification to deepen the essentials among stakeholders, reports ITRealms.

ETSI also noted that this will contribute to opportunities and challenges for the European Standardization Organizations.

The cyber security Act, ITRealms reports that the European Cybersecurity Certification Framework for ICT products and services promotion.

“It specifies the essential functions and tasks of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) in the field of cybersecurity certification,” part of the statement read.

This Act raises a number of questions regarding the standards needed to support such certification framework and the role of the different cybersecurity stakeholders.
The conference will present the Cybersecurity certification landscape and unveil what it means for policy makers, industry, citizens, certification bodies, and the European Standardization System.

At the end of the day, attendees will have a clearer view about the legislative landscape and the path forward for standards to support the Cybersecurity certification framework.
The conference aims to foster the dialogue among policy makers, industry, standardization organizations, certification bodies and those involved in the development of the ICT certification framework in Europe, in view of an effective implementation of the CyberAct upon its adoption.

ETSI Group on Millimetre Wave Transmission starts work



Arising from its recently meeting, the Industry Specification Group on millimetre Wave Transmission (ISG mWT) of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has commenced work on developing a set of five specifications include mWT, reports ITRealms.

The group which met for the first time at ETSI between January 14 and 15, 2015, saw Mr. Renato Lombardi of Huawei Technologies, emerging as the chairman of the Industry Specification Group while Mr. Nader Zei of NEC Europe was elected as the vice chairman. 

“ISG mWT was conceived as an industry wide platform to prepare for large scale usage of millimetre wave spectrum in current and future transmission networks by improving the conditions to make millimetre wave spectrum a suitable and convenient choice for all stakeholders. The ISG aims to be a worldwide initiative with global reach and to address the whole industry: national regulators, standards organizations, telecom operators, product vendors and key component vendors.” Lombardi said in his inaugural speech.

During the meeting, a plan was agreed to develop five new specifications. These cover
·         An analysis of the maturity and field proven experience of millimetre wave transmission
·         Potential applications and use cases of millimetre wave transmission
·         An overview of V-band and E-band worldwide regulations
·         An analysis of V-band street level interference
·         Analysis of the millimetre wave semiconductor Industry technology status and evolution. 

Millimetre wave spectrum, in the 30GHz to 300GHz range, offers more available spectrum than in lower bands with larger channel bandwidths granting a fibre like capacity. The spectrum can be made available readily and can be reused easily, and lower licensing costs lead to lower total cost of ownership and lower cost per bit of radio systems.

ITRealms reports that participation in the millimetre Wave Transmission Industry Specification Group is open to all ETSI members as well as organizations who are not members, subject to signing ISG Agreements.
