Towards enhancing the integrity of the National Drivers license through the Driving School Standardisation Programme (DSSP), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced the use of Computer-Based Test (CBT) by applicants to eliminate all incidences of road traffic crashes resulting from bad road use culture, reports ITREALMS.

The Corps Marshal, FRSC, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, ITREALMS gathered, has ordered the commencement of CBT for fresh applicants of the national drivers license in all the driving schools nationwide, effective from 1 June, 2021.

JAMB investigating 7 CBT centres in South East

 A total of seven Computer Based Test (CBT) centes are now under investigation by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the south eastern part of the country, reports ITRealms.

Out of the seven,  four of the centres are located in Abia State, two in Anambra State and one in Imo State.

JAMB also gave ITRealms the names of these centres to include Doreen Institute of Computer Technologies, Umuahia, Abia State, National Comprehensive Secondary School, Near 7-Up Plant, Obingwa LGA, Abia State,  Makac Global Intergrated Services Nig Ltd, Asa Road, Aba, Abia State and Pius Comprehensive Secondary School, Umuigwe-Amakama, Umuahia South L.G.A., Abia State .

Others are Prince Chums Global - Community Secontary School, Isuofia and Bintels Global Services, which is the Centre for Computer Education. While the last of the seven is Land Resources Technology, Owerri, Imo State.

ITRealms also report that JAMB during the just concluded rescheduled (mop-up) examination, in spite of all admonitions for centres to ensure that facilities work to required standards, the Board could not conduct smooth and flawless examination in certain centres where the examination had to be conducted.

The Centres concerned are hereby advised to work towards enhancing their efficiency if they wish to be retained for the Board subsequent activities. Whenever the concerned centres are satisfied that they have fixed their problems, they are to do the following immediately:

1. Invite the Board for inspection of their facilities which is not the same as accreditation exercise.

2. On the agreed day for the inspection, the centre should invite students commensurate to the capacity of the centre for a trial testing of the centre at full capacity.

3. The centre will run a trial test examination for two hours and this must be conducted smoothly without any hitch.

4. All facilities of the centres including the computer systems, cooling systems, CCTV Cameras, generating sets, backup inverters or UPS and other requirements would be put to test during the exercise.

5. The Centre must provide adequate security for such exercise.

6. The exercise would be observed by an Independent Technical Advisor chosen by the Board.

At the end of the exercise, and depending on the assessment of the Board and the Independent Technical Advisor, the verdict of the Centre’s suitability would be communicated to the Centre and it would determine whether any of the concerned centres would be allowed to participate in the Board’s future activities.

NCC boosts JAMB with CBT, says centre to enhance standards

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta has said that the Commission’s provision of Computer Based Tests (CBT) centres for Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is meant to enhance standard, ITRealms reports.

Danbatta said this when JAMB officials paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja to express gratitude tothe Telecom regulator for building and donating four CBT centres to the examination board in order to augment facilities for smooth conduct of CBT.  The four centers are located in Kano, Niger, Bayelsa and Oyo states. The centres are equipped with computers, printers, other accessories and Internet connectivity.

In a press release signed by the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Tony Ojobo,  Danbatta told the JAMB officials led by its Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde that NCC does every of its activities and projects in line with international best practices and “we have a minimum standard that we maintain for all our projects and there is no exception.”

Earlier in his remarks,ITRealms gathered, Ojerinde said JAMB appreciates, NCC gesture in this direction and “we ask for more.” So far, he said JAMB is also deploying its, CBT centres in Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), facilities in Abuja, Kano and Oshodi, Lagos State and this is in addition to the over 500 of CBT centres across the country.

“These centres are now being used for registration by potential candidates for the next Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) instead of cyber cafes,” Ojerinde submitted.

Use of CBT in Secondary Schools improper, says Lagos NUT

 The introduction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) in secondary schools has been crticised by the Lagos chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), ITRealms reports.

The state NUT Chairman, Mr. Segun Raheem, made this known in Lagos recently while addressing newsmen, and said  that the Computer-Based Test is sure to encounter hitches  because most of the students were not adequately prepared for the test

He also said the non-availability of Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilities and human resources make the NUT unprepared, adding "Computer Science has just been introduced to secondary schools as a compulsory subject which is coming rather late."

Further, ITRealms gathered, he said that only a few Lagos schools have computer science teachers and some schools gave temporary appointment to computer science teachers. Others got the teachers through the efforts of the Parents' Forum (PF)." The unionist noted that most of the secondary schools in the state had a desktop or a laptop which they used mostly for administrative work.

He noted that a few schools have ICT laboratories with internet facilities, asserting "With the present situation, in my own view, I doubt if the use of CBT is result-oriented for students in secondary schools in the state."

 "Except if crash programmes on computer studies and practice is introduced in schools, which must allow each student to have a free practice with computer, CBT will not achieve the desired aim,
