The Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals complex has successfully accelerated its crude oil processing capacity to a record 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), reports ITREALMS.

The milestone was achieved during a rigorous performance test independently conducted by the facility’s international Process Licensors. This expansion effectively pushes the facility past its original nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd, proving the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery is structurally optimized to handle higher feedstock volumes while maximizing operational yields across its production units.

Speaking on the performance breakthrough, the Vice-President for Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, explained that this successful ramp-up is the first phase of an aggressive, multi-billion-dollar expansion strategy engineered to double the plant's capacity to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months.

According to Edwin, this aggressive expansion plan is deliberately timed to secure absolute global refining dominance, migrating Nigeria entirely away from fuel-import dependence to a premium, high-yield sovereign export hub.

Conceived and financed by Africa's foremost industrialist and philanthropist, Aliko Dangote, the megaproject commenced commercial fuel refining operations in 2024. It has systematically scaled up its automated output of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS/Petrol), Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel), Dual Purpose Kerosene (Aviation/Jet Fuel), and other high-grade fractionated petroleum products.

Amidst escalating geopolitical volatility and supply chain disruptions in the Middle East, the Dangote Refinery has swiftly emerged as a critical stabilizer for the international energy market. Sovereign African nations, previously vulnerable to Mediterranean import shocks, are increasingly turning to the Lagos-based infrastructure to guarantee their national energy security.

European Destinations: Continuous cargo exports of refined products to high-regulatory markets including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Global Outposts: High-volume supplies of gasoline shipped directly into the United States market and specialized jet fuel cargo deliveries to Saudi Arabia.

Global Export Leader: Confirming this rapid market penetration, S&P Global Commodities tracked the facility as the world's absolute largest exporter of jet fuel as early as April.

By satisfying domestic demand, the refinery has significantly eased systemic pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange (FX) reserves, correcting a decades-long macroeconomic anomaly where the continent’s largest crude producer exported raw logs and imported expensive finished toothpicks.

Beyond light and heavy distillates, the refinery’s rising production volumes have caught the attention of major global commodity trading desks. The facility is actively sourcing diversified feedstocks from both domestic fields and international producers to sustain its heightened blending requirements.

Looking ahead, Aliko Dangote's 2028 target of 1.4 million bpd is projected to stimulate immense downstream industrial activity. The complex is already optimizing its output of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and vital petrochemical building blocks:

Polypropylene Production: Providing reliable local supply for packaging materials, plastics, and consumer goods manufacturing.

Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) Pipeline: Future production units are being calibrated to supply LAB, the core chemical raw material required for the mass production of synthetic domestic detergents.
