The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have formalized a partnership to strengthen data privacy enforcement across the nation’s telecommunications industry, reports ITREALMS.
Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized that data protection has evolved into a cornerstone of the communications industry.
He noted that while the sector has witnessed a historic expansion; growing from just 500,000 telephone lines to more than 170 million active connections, the focus must now shift toward the ethical governance of the data generated by these users.
Dr. Maida warned that without clear principles on how data is managed, national sovereignty could be at risk, as data generated by citizens is often monetized by global platforms without explicit consent or benefit to the owners.
He reminded digital users that "free" platforms are rarely free in the literal sense, as user data serves as the underlying currency.
National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, echoed these sentiments, describing the MoU as a vital tool for protecting the digital identity of Nigerians.
He clarified that the NDPC’s role is not to overtake the mandate of the telecom regulator but to add a specialized layer of value to the existing framework.
Dr. Olatunji expressed a firm commitment to immediate implementation, stating that the agreement must go beyond a symbolic gesture to become a functional shield for citizens.
Through this collaboration, both agencies intend to share technical expertise and build capacity in areas of mutual interest, effectively streamlining the regulatory process to prevent overlaps and ensure administrative clarity for stakeholders.
ITREALMS gathered that the partnership arrives at a critical juncture as Nigeria seeks to harness AI, which relies heavily on high-quality, locally generated data.
By creating a trusted regulatory environment, the NCC and NDPC aim to ensure that the data fueling future innovations remains secure and that the privacy rights of Nigerians are upheld.
The move ultimately seeks to eliminate friction between the statutory responsibilities of both commissions, providing a unified front against data breaches and unauthorized exploitation within the country's most vital infrastructure.
