Behind NITMA awards: Voices of innovation and leadership by Remmy Nweke - ITREALMS

The 2025 National Information Technology Merit Awards (NITMA), scheduled for November 20 at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, is poised to celebrate the human stories behind Nigeria’s digital transformation, reports ITREALMS.

Beyond their titles, these awards spotlight real people whose dedication and creativity continue to reshape the nation's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) landscape.


Digital Governor: Governor Uba Sani (Kaduna State)
In 2023, Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani clinched the Digital Governor of the Year title for his administration’s commitment to modernising public services. Under his leadership, a high-impact partnership with Google trained 5,000 women and girls in data science and AI—an initiative NCS praised for propelling Kaduna into a digital innovation hub.

Digital Governor: Governor Hope Uzodinma (Imo State)
Governor Uzodinma made waves at the 2024 NITMA by earning the same prestigious title. His administration’s ambition to transform Imo into Nigeria’s innovation and technical talent hub stood out, reflecting a broader vision of tech as a tool for empowerment.

IT Gold Merit Award: Governor Godwin Obaseki (Edo State)
In 2023, Edo State Governor Obaseki received the IT Gold Merit Award—a mark of progressive leadership in digital governance. Edo State’s transition to a fully paperless system and the deployment of over 2,000 km of fibre optics across its 18 LGAs underscore the systemic transformation he championed.

IT Personality of the Year: Funke Opeke (Founder & CEO, MainOne)
Funke Opeke, whose leadership and innovation have transformed internet infrastructure across West Africa, was honoured as IT Personality of the Year in 2022 by NITMA, recognizing her work in a space historically dominated by men.

NITMA has a rich legacy of celebrating tech pioneers. Among the luminaries previously recognised are Leo Stan Ekeh (Zinox Technologies) in 2011, Juliet Chiazor (Google Nigeria) in 2012, and Mitchell Elegbe (Interswitch) in 2020.

IT Gold Merit Award: Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi (DG, NITDA)
In 2021, the award was bestowed upon the then DG of NITDA, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, for his instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s digital regulation frameworks and initiatives aimed at elevating the digital economy.
