Nutritionist prescribes adequate diet for aged - ITREALMS

Senior Nursing Officer, Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health, Ogun State, Mrs Grace Temitope Sobiye, has prescribed good dieting for the aged, reports 
ITREALMS.

Speaking at the maiden presentation of food items and cash to the aged in Ago-egun community hall, Isabo, Abeokuta by a non-governmental organisation, Inaolaji Humane Foundation tagged ‘caring for the aged’ she suggested a healthy ageing as a process of maintaining functional ability to enable total wellbeing in older age through good diet, routine medical check-up, sound sleep, exercise and healthy relationship with others to aids longevity.

Mrs Sobiye pointed out that everyone should embrace good health through healthy living, physical, emotional state of mind and mental alertness, stressing that the body system; head, eyes, nose, hands and legs work with other parts of the body for effective health status at old age.

The Senior officer also noted that old age is not sickness just that the body system may not be active compares to younger age as decrease in body capacity due to old age may results in eye defects, body weakness, teeth removal, skin wrinkles among others.

"There's specific number of hours for sound sleep at oldage as it pertains to little child good sleeping hours which should not be hinder to avoid brain malfunctioning,” she said, insisting that the effects which may leads to high blood pressure due to lack of sleep.

In addition, she cautioned the aged to avoid loneliness or staying alone as this posed more dangers to their longevity but rather mingle with their old friends, school mates and neighbours.

"Adequate exercise through dancing to favourite songs and walking is a good form of exercise, avoid oily/greasy foods, eat less meat/eggs, avoid alcohols," she advised.

Mrs. Sobiye reiterated the need for a routine medical checkup to determine their sugar-level, weight, blood pressure is compulsory for total good health status making oldage pleasant.

She encouraged good food intake with more of fruits and vegetables, more fluids intake, maintaining they should drink more water.

The Chairman, Inaolaji Humane Foundation Internatioal, Mr Emmanuel Inaolaji represented by Princess Ifejola Otun in his opening speech, said the foundation's efforts to create a levelling platform for the less-privileges, people living with disability (Plwd), widows and old people to live a comfortable life through the voluntary efforts of his foundation to complement the efforts of government in alleviate poverty and giving care-services for the aged in the society.

Inaolaji, who is the founder and chief financier of the foundation enjoined people’s participation and registration in the foundation as more periodic check-up awaits them all from time to time.

The chairman emphasized the aims of the foundation in taking care of the widows, aged, people living with disabilities and the inclusion of youths on skills empowerments in nearest future.

He enjoined all to register their aged, widow, youths and people living with disability(PLWD) to enjoy the laidout plans for them.

Their passion, he said, is driven by people with a variety common interests to perform a variety of services and humanitarian functions" He said.

Also, speaking Mrs Adijat Ogunseye, women representative,Ogun State Senatorial District enjoined the young ones to take pay more attention to the aged because they're now "toddlers" that requires more attention

"Don't shout nor be aggrieved with them as some of the immune system are not active as it when young due to old age" she said

She opined a good platform for oldage without grudges nor hatred for a smoother & healthier society.

"the elderly should create a good rapport with the people around them especially the immediate neighbours bearing in mind that they are the first responders in case of emergency before their blood relations arrived" she added

ITREALMS gathered the one-day programme was organised by Inaolaji Humane Foundation a non-profit oriented and non-governmental organisations set up to alleviate the sufferings of the less privileged which is organised at a Local, National and at International levels.

Presentation of food items and cash were made to the aged by Mrs Ogunsuyi Funmi, Mrs Ifejola Otun, Mr Ilo Taiwo and other executives.

Other dignitaries at the event are religious leathers, health officers and Alhaji Fatai Adedamola, Committee Chairman ,Zonal Community Development Abeokuta South.
