7 Cyber-security myths worth noting

Cyber-security is a major threat to every business today. This reality is amplified by our increasingly inter-connected world which makes dependence on digital services an absolute necessity. Despite the increasing global spend on cyber-security, cyber criminals are still having a field day.

In this piece, the Research/Development Unit of Yudala – Nigeria’s fastest growing e-commerce outfit – dissects the myths that prevent businesses and other individuals from taking effective measures to counter imminent cyber-security threats, with attendant huge losses and costs.

1.Strong passwords keep me protected
This is one of the myths that often leads to a hacking breach. While strong passwords are good, they are more effective when combined with other measures such as a two-factor authentication. This provides a second layer of security for your account(s). Furthermore, strong passwords may expose the user to self-imposed dangers. When passwords become difficult to remember or too complicated, the user may have no choice than to change them too frequently. As a result, you may be forced to write these passwords down since you can no longer memorize them, thereby opening the door to unauthorized access to your account.

2.My small business is not a target. Only big businesses are at risk
If you think that small businesses are not at risk of cyber-attacks, then think again. According to a recent report by Radware, 98% of organizations experienced cyberattacks in 2016. Small and mid-sized companies with less than 250 employees were the target of a reported 31% of these attacks. Organizations on the lower end of the scale are much more attractive to hackers as it is widely believed that less is being done by these companies to protect their sensitive data. This has manifested in an increasingly popular mode of attack known as Ransomware, where attackers encrypt data taken from the victim and in return for decrypting the data, they ask for an acceptable amount from the victim as ransom. These victims include individuals, small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large corporates.

3.The website is HTTPS, so I am secure from attacks
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted.  While it secures your website at a minimal level, it is important to note that HTTPS does not prevent the hacking of a website, server, or a network. By diminishing Distributed Denial of Services (DDOS) attacks, hackers can force their way into your access controls exposing a website’s availability. Hence, every activity you carry out online must be done with this knowledge at the back of your mind.

4.Hackers will find nothing worth stealing
Many individuals and small business owners have this mind-set when confronted with news of the global effects of cyber-security. This myth or mind-set is, however, debunked by the potentially costly effects of enduring a breach, whether on a personal or corporate level. On a personal level, every individual has sensitive personal data that we would not wish to fall into the wrong hands. Pictures, video files or other personal information could expose us to grave danger or loss when unauthorized persons gain access to them. And on the corporate level, several small business owners who feel they have nothing worth stealing have had their fingers burned.

Research from Kaspersky Lab notes that a single cyber security incident now costs small and medium businesses (SMBs) an average of $86 500 per incident, mainly through loss of data. This data ranges from information about clients, customer details, bank details or access to your customers’ systems through e-commerce links or via email.

5.My computer is at risk only when I connect to a network or the internet
In addition to external attacks launched when a device is connected online, internal threats are also a major source of hacks or data breach. Users working inside your firewall with laptops, tablets, USB drives and other removable media that have been exposed to malware represent one of the most common access points for hackers. It is therefore, not surprising that many cyber-security specialists see the USB drive as the biggest hazard to cyber security. One out of every 8 attacks on computers these days, is believed to enter via USB devices.

6.Firewalls and network security are in place. I can go to sleep
For hackers, the art of circumventing a firewall is not an alien skill. Most hackers find it easy to disrupt codes or capitalize on loop-holes to gain access to your system, so the existence of a firewall is not a sure-fire guarantee of security. While it is clear that most cyber security threats are avoidable, your organization can not rely solely on firewalls for protection. Research also shows that, despite the huge outlay on network security, cyber-attacks are more severe at the application layer of your system infrastructure as network security does not often pose much resistance to cyber- bandits.

7.Security is assured since my website is externally hosted

Web hosting providers abound in their numbers. The likes of HostGator, Blue Host, Web.com, GoDaddy, DreamHost, InMotion and eHost, among others, have thousands of websites on their client list. As a result, effectively monitoring each site may be a herculean task. A significant majority of all external attacks occur as a result of poorly administered, misconfigured or inadequately managed systems. These loop-holes are easy for any eagle-eyed hacker to take advantage of. Hence, while a host is guaranteed to provide server level security; the major responsibility for managing the security of your website resides with you, the site owner.

World Press Freedom Day 2017: African editors wants media freedom restriction laws abolished

The African Editors Forum (TAEF) has reiterated calls to heads of states and governments to, as a matter of urgency, to abolish all laws that restrict media freedom, reports ITRealms.

Chairperson, African Editors Forum, Jovial Rantao, in a press statement made available to ITRealms, also called on African states to recognize the indivisibility of press freedom and their responsibility to respect their commitments to African and international protocols upholding the freedom, independence and safety of the press.

“On this day, our thoughts go out to the many journalists and editors who are languishing in jails across the continent, simply for doing their work. One of these is Ahmed Abba, a journalist in Cameroon who was tried in a military court and handed a 10 year sentence with a hefty fine. Seven other journalists in Cameroon are on trial,” Rantao said.

She also said, TAEF is seriously concerned about the deteriorating state of media freedom and strongly deplores the intimidation, by the government of Zambia, of journalists and editors. Three journalists have appeared in court, charged with spurious crimes - all in an effort to intimidate them and dissuade them from telling the truth fairly and honestly.

TAEF, according to Rantao, remains worried about media freedom violations which are taking a growing toll on African journalists.

“We are concerned about the deterioration of media freedom in  South Sudan, Republic of Congo, Uganda, Djibouti, Burundi Nigeria, Mali and Eritrea,” she said.

Further, TAEF urged African governments to recommit themselves to the Windhoek Declaration and the Declaration of Table Mountain.

“Both declarations condemned, in the strongest terms, all forms of repression of African media that allows for banning of newspapers and the use of other devices such as levying import duties on newsprint and printing material as well as withholding government advertising,” she lamented.

TAEF emphasized that African governments should release jailed journalists for their professional activities immediately and allow journalists who have been forced into exile to return to their countries.

African states must promote the highest standards of press freedom in furtherance of the principles proclaimed in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other protocols and to provide constitutional guarantees of freedom of the press.

FG upholds press freedom, disagrees with RWB

The Federal Government has declared commitment of the President Buhari's administration to upholding the freedom of the press in the country, reports ITRealms.

A public statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and made available to ITRealms, to mark the World Press Freedom Day 2017, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described as inaccurate the recent survey by Reporters Without Borders, which alleged that Nigeria's press freedom rating has been on sustained decline since 2015.

He said despite the inaccurate and fake news saturating the media space, the Federal Government has not put a single journalist behind bars as a result of his or her professional conduct.

Alhaji Mohammed said even though there are reports that some States have been hard on some journalists and bloggers for alleged misconduct, it has not been the policy of this Federal Government to join issues with the media, because of its unflinching commitment to upholding the tenets of democracy, which include free press and freedom of speech.

He said the recent incident involving the Punch Correspondent covering the State House is an aberration, adding that the speed with which the order barring the correspondent from the State House was reversed has lent credence to the fact that this government is not out to muzzle the press.

The Minister recalled that the accreditation of the current Chairman of the State House Press Corps, Ubale Musa, which was withdrawn by the previous administration, was immediately restored upon the assumption of office by the Buhari Administration, in order to give the media unhindered access to the Seat of Power.

He therefore pledged the readiness to this administration to always create a conducive environment for the media to thrive and to continue to discharge its constitutional mandate without hindrance.

Nigeria loses $1.5bn on GDP to vitamin deficiencies

Due to lack of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, Nigeria is annually losing over $1.5 billion, an estimated N459.3 billion, in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) according to the World Bank, reports ITRealms.

This, ITRealms gathered, is coming as Nigeria needs some $912 million to tackle the malnutrition menace, especially on children, just as World Bank ranks Nigeria’s Human Development Index (HDI) at 158 out of the 182 countries, whereas life expectancy stood at 48 years.
According to the latest Nutrition at a Glance released by the World Bank and made available to ITRealms, annually, “Nigeria loses over US$1.5 billion in GDP to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.” Stressing that scaling up core micronutrient interventions will cost less than US$188 million per year.
World Bank also said that over one-third of child deaths in Nigeria are attributed to undernutrition, mostly from increased severity of disease.
ITRealms also reports that children who are undernourished between conception and age two, are at high risk for impaired cognitive development, which adversely affects the country’s productivity and growth.
The economic costs of undernutrition, ITRealms reports, include direct costs such as the increased burden on the health care system, and indirect costs of lost in productivity.
“Childhood anemia alone is associated with a 2.5 per cent drop in adult wages,” World Bank group said.
Nigeria, World Bank said, is the country with the 3rd highest absolute number of children who are stunted, however, Nigeria has achieved near universal salt iodization as 97 per cent of households consume iodized salt.
“This is a major factor in preventing iodine deficiency, which can cause Intelligent Quotient (IQ) loss in infants and young children. Nigeria should be commended for this achievement and universal salt iodization is important to continue,” part of the report read.

Mastercard $1m grant ignites African business growth

The Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth has confirmed commitment to a grant of up to USD$1 million over three years to support the growth of small business owners in Africa and Rwanda particularly, reports ITRealms.
Ensuring that the first phase of the roll out of the grant is successful, Mastercard has partnered with the African Entrepreneur Collective (AEC), locally known as Inkomoko. The team develops and grooms entrepreneurs in industries such as technology, agriculture and energy – three of East Africa’s biggest and fastest growing sectors, and priorities in Rwanda.
ITRealms recalls that this was proclaimed during the 2016 World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF Africa) in Kigali, Rwanda, which saw Mastercard committed to supporting Rwanda’s vision of financially empowering its citizens, with the grant established to support achieving this goal. The commitment is in line with driving poverty out of Rwanda through job creation, ensuring gender equality through equal access to opportunities, and delivering decent work prospects which will enable economic growth.
Entrepreneurs and small business owners are key drivers of the local economy – currently making up 97.8 percent of the private sector in the country. Inkomoko’s one-year programme removes the barriers local entrepreneurs face in the areas of skills development, networks, and financing, through providing mentoring, technical support, capacity building, and direct access to affordable capital.
What makes the partnership between Mastercard and Inkomoko unique is the support of both Rwandan nationals as well as some of the 160,000 refugees currently living in Rwanda. In collaboration with the United Nations Agency on Refugees (UNHCR), the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) and Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, Inkomoko will roll out a programme aimed at fostering the social and economic independence of refugees in Rwanda.
With a large population of refugees, the role of private and public partnerships remains crucial to the inclusive growth and development of all those displaced. Mastercard, together with the African Entrepreneur Collective, has committed to assisting entrepreneurs in Rwanda regardless of their circumstances, a vision shared and driven by the Rwandan government.
“Connecting entrepreneurs, especially women and refugees, to the networks that power the modern world – like financial services – unlocks their economic potential and accelerates a cycle of equitable and sustainable economic growth,” says Shamina Singh, President of the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth.
The Inkomoko entrepreneurship programme aims to restore the dignity of refugees living in Rwanda by empowering these small business owners with vital support to grow their businesses. The programme will work with 4,000 refugees in Rwanda over the next three years.
“The intention is to connect refugees with the tools and skills necessary to enable them to become self-sufficient and independent entrepreneurs to improve their own livelihoods, create jobs for others in their communities, and contribute to Rwanda’s larger economic development. Rwanda’s refugee camps and host communities are places of vibrant social and economic activity with bustling markets, shops, restaurants, and industries,” says Julienne Oyler, Executive Director of African Entrepreneur Collective. “Supporting and developing entrepreneurs in these areas will have tremendous impact on the communities themselves and the country at large.”
Rwanda has become a bustling centre of commerce in Africa, and by implementing programmes that broadly target high potential local entrepreneurs, broad-based economic growth can be advanced by equipping the country’s next generation of business owners with the right tools to hone their financial literacy – the foundation of financial inclusion and growth.
In this way, the support provided as part of the grant not only falls in with the country’s Vision 2020 strategy to create a knowledge-based, cashless economy with 90 percent financial inclusion, it also contributes to Rwanda meeting its Sustainable Development Goals, most notably in terms of eradicating poverty and driving gender equality through the empowerment and entrepreneurship.
Facilitating inclusive growth is an important way to build social and economic development, and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth remains committed to working with partners in both the public and private spheres to drive that development. “Microentrepreneurs drive the local economy, and through our partnership with African Entrepreneur Collective, we look forward to empowering them with the tools and training to grow their businesses and advance the lives of their families and communities,” concludes Singh.
