CFA joins Jury for ‘Falling Walls’ Lab Lagos

The founder of CFAtech, Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA) has been invited to join the jury for the www.falling-walls.com Lagos, reports ITRealms.

This invite was extended by the office of the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany to be part of the jury for the first Falling Walls Lab Lagos, slated for Saturday, April 28, 2018.

The letter personally signed by Ingo Herbert, Consular General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos, read in part "It is my privilege and honor to write to invite you as a member of the jury to the first Falling Walls Lab Lagos which will take place at the German Consulate General on 28th April 2018 at 1 pm."

The Falling Walls Lab is a commemoration of the Falling the Berlin Wall established in 2011 by the Falling Walls Foundation to support ideas and innovation from outstanding academics anywhere in the world.

According to Herbert, the Falling Walls Lab Lagos is being jointly carried out with support from the University of Ibadan by the German Consulate Lagos and the Nigerian arm of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) the first ever Falling Walls in Nigeria.

He added that the Labs are organized independently in various places across the globe, typically by or in collaboration with a scientific institution.

Interested student applicants of any discipline from various institutions should submit their application on www.falling-walls.com/lab/apply. These students would be judged based on their ideas, vision, social initiatives to business models relevant to the world today.

However, they will have to do a 3 minutes presentation of their projects to the jury, consisting of experts from academia, research institutions, and the business community.

The selected winners will travel to Berlin, Germany to participate in the Lab finale, where there will be presentations from 100 other winners of other Labs across the globe. As well as the Falling Walls Conference, where more than 600 guests from 75 nations are expected to attend.

All participants, he said, would attend the conference with the three winners of Lagos wing in Berlin giving yet another 3-minute. The costs are covered by the hosting institution.

EFCC probe Communication Minister, Adebayo Shittu – CGN urges

There seems to be more trouble for the Communications Minister, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, as the Computer Guild of Nigeria (CGN) has invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) to immediately investigate and probe him over allegations of corruption, misappropriation of public funds and self-enrichment against him by former aide, reports ITRealms.

Shittu, ITRealms recalls was accused of owning 12 luxury homes, N93m printing press houses and 25 luxurious cars by his former media aide, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare.

Reacting to the allegations, the President of Ibadan-based CGN, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, told ITRealms that the Minister, Adebayo Shittu should be immediately investigated over these allegations of massive frauds and corruption.

He went on to say that until his appointment as Minister, his law chamber was shut due to N100,000 debt owe the landlord.

“There is a popular rumour ferried around Uncle Joe in Mokola in Ibadan that Minister Adebayo Shittu was quitted from the apartment he was using for his legal consultancy due to debt of N100,000 owing his landlord.

“Today, this same Minister Adebayo Shittu now owns a well-furnished complete building turned to his law chamber at Kabiawu in same Mokola axis,” he said.

The group, therefore urged EFCC to also invite Minister Shittu’s former aide, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare who in his statement described his boss as greedy and corrupt to come and say all he knows about his boss’s accumulation of sudden wealth through bribery and corruption.

NITDA gives nod to CBN’s ICT security upgrade

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has given nod to some four Information and Communication Technology (ICT) security and systems infrastructure upgrade projects by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), reports ITRealms.

This was confirmed by the agency in a press statement made available to ITRealms, and endorsed by the Head, Corporate Affairs and External Relations at NITDA, Mrs Hadiza Umar, quoted the Director-General, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, as saying they have cleared a number of ICT Security and Systems Infrastructure Upgrade projects of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its commitment as the government’s clearinghouse for all IT procurement and services in the public sector.

ITRealms gathered that the projects cleared include:

"1.   Enterprise Network Security – Gateway Security Project, aimed at upgrading the Bank’s network security appliances and ensures that network security appliances are highly available and provides comprehensive real-time protection against advanced threats.

2.   The Intelligence Security Operations Center project that is aimed at providing a dedicated center, technology and team for continuous monitoring of the Bank's network to prevent, detect and deal with Cyber-attacks.

3.   Implementation of a Network Access Control (NAC) Solution – a security approach designed to restrict the availability of network resources to endpoint devices – aimed at enhancing infrastructure security as well as limit potential effects from emerging security threats.

4.   The Identity and Access Management Solution project aimed at ensuring that the right individuals access the right resources/applications at the right times and for the right reasons."

Also, ITRealms gathered that Pantami in the clearance letter, commended the Bank for the proactive manner in handling these threats and reiterated NITDA’s continued support for all initiatives aimed at ensuring that the country’s cyberspace is safe and secure.

SMART CITY: NCC to enhance connectivity, access in Edo State

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has advanced plans to enhance connectivity, access in Edo State, reports ITRealms.

This, ITRealms gathered is coming as NCC is to improve access to telecoms infrastructure and provide citizens of Edo State with world class telecoms and ICT facilities, spanning the refurbishing of two computer centres in tertiary institutions.

Disclosing this during a meeting between the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the NCC, led by the Commission’s Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Mr Sunday Dare, at NCC headquarters, Wednesday, Dare commended the forward-looking policies of the Governor and assured him of the NCC’s readiness to support the achievement of the ICT aspirations of the State through the deployment of fiber infrastructure under the Commission’s InfraCo project and interventions by the Universal Service Provision Fund.

He noted that the NCC is aggressively driving accessibility to telecoms networks at all nooks and crannies of the Federation. He however regretted that situation with multiple taxation and regulation in some States of the Federation is counter-productive for the States – this is because they end up losing substantial revenues and developmental opportunities which could have been stimulated with the presence of telecoms infrastructure. He assured the Governor that NCC is keen to partner Edo State to achieve win-win solutions in the overall interests of the good people of Edo State.

In his remarks, the Governor noted that the Edo State Government is focused on exploring non-oil resources and has therefore articulated developmental priorities focusing on creating a sense of order (participative, accountable and open governance); and a sense of security, safety and stability necessary to attract requisite investments to develop the State. Since its developmental goals relies on the seamless availability of telecoms/ICT infrastructure, Edo State is passionate about the need to attract robust telecoms infrastructure to drive manufacturing, education and other socio-economic activities. As an example of the State’s forward-looking approach, the Governor noted that Edo State has always made provision for shared fiber ducts in its road projects and looks forward to engaging with NCC and operators to agree on fiber deployment projects and routes as necessary.

During the meeting, the Executive Secretary of the USPF, Mr Ayuba Shuaibu confirmed that the USPF has evaluated and agreed to support the College of Education in Benin City and the Institute of Continuing Education in Abudu, Edo State with a grant to establish a computer laboratory and provide Optic Fiber Connectivity to the institutions.

The Governor thanked the USPF for the gesture and emphasized that the State is committed to the deployment of technology solutions to enhance basic education delivery, skills development and economic opportunities for its citizens. Mr Dare assured the Governor of NCC’s support in this regard.

The parties therefore agreed to explore opportunities for partnership in the deployment of telecoms infrastructure in Edo State in a manner that supports the State’s developmental objectives and provides citizens with access to fast, efficient and  effective telecoms service whilst affording necessary protection for telecoms infrastructure in the State.

Nigeria needs a national worldview – Prof. Moghalu

The former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Kingsley Chiedu Moghalu, has said that Nigeria needs a worldview that could help realize its potential, reports ITRealms.

Speaking at the 2018 edition of The Bullion Lecture, the annual lecture series of Centre for Financial Journalism (CFJ Nigeria), a training and research organization based in Lagos, on the topic “The Wealth of Nations and the Imperative of Economic Transformation”, Prof. Moghalu said that “As in individuals, so it is for countries. Those that have well developed worldview, with global strategic intent in a competitive world, tend to perform better than those that don’t”.

He attributed Nigeria’s economic poor performance to lack of this essential worldview, especially lack of economic philosophy. “Nigeria has failed to achieve high-quality economic growth because the country’s economy is managed mostly on an ad-hoc, reactive basis. It is a “survival” economy in which most governments that held political power have had no real economic vision or a strategy to execute such a vision successfully”, Moghalu said.

Also, he noted that though Nigeria has a national policy on science, technology and innovation, this has practically no impact on Nigeria’s economy, arguing that this is because there is no policy support for moving the products of innovation into the marketplace through mass production and marketing distribution, and because the incentives for innovation are not yet strong enough in intellectual property law and regulation.

He disclosed that patents and other kinds of intellectual property are the engine drivers of knowledge economy.

“The absence of a link between science, commercialized indigenous innovation, and economic and business activity is a fundamental obstacle between Nigeria and a quantum leap to prosperity. This gap is all the more tragic because science and technology is one area in which African countries such as Nigeria can quickly develop global competitive advantage over the Western world and even Asia”.

He further revealed that Nigeria’s economy lacks complexity in the extreme, which is why the country remains the greatest importer of Premium Motor Spirit while it exports crude oil.

Moghalu insisted that Nigeria should have an established worldview; establishment and consistent application of clear economic philosophy of entrepreneurial capitalism in the context of a developmental state, as the guiding framework for the Nigerian economy; constitutional repeal of the Land Use Act that traps wealth of Nigerian citizens in the hands of government choking  grip of state bureaucracy; reforming the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation into a partially privatized company; deregulating the downstream petroleum sector; and avoid further foreign loans which has put us back into a debt trap that will mortgage the future generations of Nigeria.

Facebook data controversy: Mark Zuckerberg promises developers hardtime, reassures users

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook shares an update on the Cambridge Analytica situation -- including the steps we've already taken and our next steps to address this important issue.

"We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can't then we don't deserve to serve you. I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there's more to do, and we need to step up and do it.

Here's a timeline of the events:

In 2007, we launched the Facebook Platform with the vision that more apps should be social. Your calendar should be able to show your friends' birthdays, your maps should show where your friends live, and your address book should show their pictures. To do this, we enabled people to log into apps and share who their friends were and some information about them.

In 2013, a Cambridge University researcher named Aleksandr Kogan created a personality quiz app. It was installed by around 300,000 people who shared their data as well as some of their friends' data. Given the way our platform worked at the time this meant Kogan was able to access tens of millions of their friends' data.

In 2014, to prevent abusive apps, we announced that we were changing the entire platform to dramatically limit the data apps could access. Most importantly, apps like Kogan's could no longer ask for data about a person's friends unless their friends had also authorized the app. We also required developers to get approval from us before they could request any sensitive data from people. These actions would prevent any app like Kogan's from being able to access so much data today.

In 2015, we learned from journalists at The Guardian that Kogan had shared data from his app with Cambridge Analytica. It is against our policies for developers to share data without people's consent, so we immediately banned Kogan's app from our platform, and demanded that Kogan and Cambridge Analytica formally certify that they had deleted all improperly acquired data. They provided these certifications.

Last week, we learned from The Guardian, The New York Times and Channel 4 that Cambridge Analytica may not have deleted the data as they had certified. We immediately banned them from using any of our services. Cambridge Analytica claims they have already deleted the data and has agreed to a forensic audit by a firm we hired to confirm this. We're also working with regulators as they investigate what happened.

This was a breach of trust between Kogan, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. But it was also a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it. We need to fix that.

In this case, we already took the most important steps a few years ago in 2014 to prevent bad actors from accessing people's information in this way. But there's more we need to do and I'll outline those steps here:

First, we will investigate all apps that had access to large amounts of information before we changed our platform to dramatically reduce data access in 2014, and we will conduct a full audit of any app with suspicious activity. We will ban any developer from our platform that does not agree to a thorough audit. And if we find developers that misused personally identifiable information, we will ban them and tell everyone affected by those apps. That includes people whose data Kogan misused here as well.

Second, we will restrict developers' data access even further to prevent other kinds of abuse. For example, we will remove developers' access to your data if you haven't used their app in 3 months. We will reduce the data you give an app when you sign in -- to only your name, profile photo, and email address. We'll require developers to not only get approval but also sign a contract in order to ask anyone for access to their posts or other private data. And we'll have more changes to share in the next few days.

Third, we want to make sure you understand which apps you've allowed to access your data. In the next month, we will show everyone a tool at the top of your News Feed with the apps you've used and an easy way to revoke those apps' permissions to your data. We already have a tool to do this in your privacy settings, and now we will put this tool at the top of your News Feed to make sure everyone sees it.

Beyond the steps we had already taken in 2014, I believe these are the next steps we must take to continue to secure our platform.

I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I'm responsible for what happens on our platform. I'm serious about doing what it takes to protect our community. While this specific issue involving Cambridge Analytica should no longer happen with new apps today, that doesn't change what happened in the past. We will learn from this experience to secure our platform further and make our community safer for everyone going forward.

I want to thank all of you who continue to believe in our mission and work to build this community together. I know it takes longer to fix all these issues than we'd like, but I promise you we'll work through this and build a better service over the long term.

Dapchi girls abduction, release: PDP accuses APC, Presidency of war crime, seeks UN intervention

While appreciating God Almighty, on the return of the abducted and release of some of the Dapchi School girls, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and certain officials in the Presidency of war crimes, reports ITRealms.

According to the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a press statement made available to ITRealms said that for staging the abduction of the schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe State, for political purposes, APC leadership deserves international prosecution for war crime.

“Our Party considers this act as wicked, callous and tormenting to use innocent schoolgirls as pawns in an ignoble script that was designed to hoodwink Nigerians and orchestrate a great rescue and security prowess of a conquering general, all to push a 2019 reelection bid, is an unpardonable gamble with human lives.

“While this failed Dapchi drama remains a poorly crafted tragicomedy: a scam of no equal dimension, Nigerians are not ready to forgive the APC and the Presidency for the torments inflicted on the girls, their parents and the human community worldwide just to score a cheap political point,” he said.

Nigerians, PDP said, know that the main aim of this devilish act was to delude the public, set the stage for an orchestrated rescue, create a heroic myth and false sense of achievement around the APC administration and serve as a spur for President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration to contest the 2019 presidential election, perhaps in the coming weeks.

As a political party, PDP said it wants to further state unequivocally that by all ramifications, “this is a war crime against humanity and gross violation of human rights on the part of the APC administration, all in the bid to push a selfish and ill-lucked 2019 ambition.”

PDP insisted that “there is no evidence that the Boko Haram insurgents or any militant group abducted the schoolgirls in the first place. Rather, what is evident to all is the high level official manipulation of security movements in Dapchi both in the staged abduction and the returning of the traumatized schoolgirls.”

“It is instructive to note that till date, no report has been presented by the National Security Adviser (NSA), who has been charged by President Muhammadu Buhari with investigation of the abduction. This is in addition to deliberate efforts by the government to suppress free flow of information around the abduction.

“Even the regular Nigerian on the street has examined the events leading to this abduction of our daughters as well as their release and can deduce the obvious.

“Nigerians are all aware that both the abduction and return of the schoolgirls were dramatically preceded by questionable withdrawal of troops and all security apparati at checkpoints and flashpoints in the Dapchi area.

“They are also aware that the Buhari Presidency, as the principal command center of military operations, has refused to come out clear on the compromising of security and why no arrest has so far been affected in the entire saga, thus betraying a high-level of government conspiracy against the citizens for political reasons.

“The PDP therefore calls on the United Nations (UN) and the International Criminal Court to declare this evil by the APC Federal Government a war crime against humanity and immediately commence investigation on the matter. We demand the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in this saga.

“In the same vein, we join Nigerians to demand for the setting up of a UN monitored Truth Commission to unravel the facts around the Dapchi event as well as the abduction of Schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State in 2014.

“While we commiserate with the families of our loved daughters and rejoice with those whose daughters were brought home safely, we urge Nigerians to be alert and continue to monitor the activities of the APC as we approach the 2019 general election since it is now clear that this government will stop at nothing in its desperate bid to perpetuate itself in power against the will of the people,” PDP submitted.

Confirmd! FG says 101 freed Dapchi schoolgirls now documented

The number of the Dapchi schoolgirls who were released on Wednesday morning has increased from 76 to 101, according to the FederalGovernment of Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

Confirmed this to ITRealms, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a press statement by Senior Assistant to Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi.

Mohammed also said, the documentation of more of the freed girls by the security agencies proved that Dapchi schoolgirls who were released on Wednesday have increased from 76 to 101.

The number could still increase, as the documentation of the freed girls is ongoing, stressing that the release of the schoolgirls is the outcome of the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to all security agencies to do everything possible to secure the release of the 110 Dapchi schoolgirls, who were abducted 19 February 2018.

In addition, the minister said the girls were released around 3 a.m. through back-channel efforts and with the help of some friends of the country, and that it was unconditional.

''For the release to work, the government had a clear understanding that violence and confrontation would not be the way out as it could endanger the lives of the girls, hence a non-violent approach was the preferred option.

''Within the period when the girls were being brought back, operational pause was observed in certain areas to ensure free passage and also that lives were not lost,'' he said.

Meanwhile, a Federal Government Delegation comprising Ministers of Information and Culture; Interior as well as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs are on their way to Maiduguri to meet with the freed girls.

NLNG Prizes: Keeping the light of excellence burning

Many companies across the world often come up with programmes or initiatives aimed at positively impacting their societies and it has not been any different in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, company Limited has sustained a trail it blazed several years ago, which has set it apart as a model, not only in Nigeria but in the African continent and beyond,

The Nigeria Prize for Science and The Nigeria Prize for Literature, solely sponsored by the NLNG Ltd., have over the years become the most celebrated Prizes in Africa and among the most sought after in the world, not only because of the prize money but also because of the indisputable excellence that has come to be associated with the winning entries and the quality of administration of the Prizes.

The aim of the Prizes is to bring Nigerian scientists and creative writers to public attention and celebrate excellence in scientific breakthroughs and literary accomplishments in the country and over the years, this aim has continued to be achieved, especially given the quality of entries, the caliber of Judges assembled by the administrators of the Prizes and the global applause that attends the winning entries.

The Science Prize is administered by an Advisory Board made up of distinguished scientists while the Advisory Board for Literature that handles the Literature Prize is made up of members of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL} and Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

The prize money, which has grown from $20,000 in 2004 to $30,000 in 2006 and to $50,000 in 2008, has since 2011 become a princely $100,000 for the winner(s) in each category.

Although the money cannot have been the major motivating factor for most of the hardnosed scientists and thorough-bred literary artists that have sent in entries for the competitions, it cannot, but must have helped to raise the bar and attract the best in the categories that are advertised annually.

Carefully chosen themes have produced internationally acknowledged scientific results are waiting for governments and other stakeholders to adopt and put them to public use for general good in keeping with the goal of the Science Prize which is to provide leaders with answers to crucial issues of development, improve standards of living and re-energise the scientific community to seek solutions to national problems.

The different genres – Poetry, Prose Fiction, Drama and Children’s Literature – that are focused on in rotation each year for the Literature Prize also turn out book that are equally internationally celebrated, also in line with the goal of the Prize, which is to improve the quality of writing, editing, proof reading and publishing.

Past winners of the Science Prize are Prof. Akpoveta Susu and now Dr. Kingsley Abhulimen (2004); Prof. Michael Adikwu (2006); Dr. Ebenezer Meshida (2008); Prof. Andrew Nok (2009); Prof. Akahehomen O. Akii Ibhadode (2010) and in 2017, joint winners emerged for their researches on solutions to the malaria scourge. The winners are Ikeoluwapo Ajayi, Ayodele Jegede and Bidemi Yusuf; Olugbenga Mokuolu; and Chukwuma Agubata.

There were years when the entries for both the Science and Literature Prizes were adjudged not deserving, and no winners were announced.

Winners of the Literature Prize in the different genres have been Ezenwa Ohaeto and Gabriel Okara (2005); Dr. Ahmed Yerimah (2006); Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo and Mabel Segun (2007); Kaime Agary (2008); Dr. Esiaba Irobi (2010); Adeleke Adeyemi (2011); Chika Unigwe (2012); Tade Ipadeola (2013); Sam Ukala (2014); Abubakar Adam Ibrahim (2016) and Ikeogu Oke (2017).

The Literary Criticism Award has not been as popular as the Science and Literature Prizes, despite efforts the administrators of the Award and NLNG say they have made to popularize it in universities in the country.

This should not be so. Literary critics are very important components of the creative process and lecturers, especially in Departments of Literature and English Studies should wake up and send in entries for the Award that has a N1million price tag.

There cannot be vibrant Literature without correspondingly vibrant literary critics.

The trail blazer, NLNG, has played its part. It has advertised calls for entries for the Prizes for year 2018. The theme for the Science Prize is ‘Innovations in Electric Power Solutions’ and the Literature Prize focuses on Drama. Winners of the Prizes will be announced in October to commemorate the first export of Liquefied Natural Gas, LNG cargo by NLNG on October 9, 1999.

Everyone should, indeed, identify with these Prizes, which have since become the Nigerian equivalent of the Nobel Prizes, especially for Science and Literature in the country.
