Zain Group, Tekelec deal enhances consumer offerings

•As Zain Nigeria goes on all IP

Zain Group, last weekend, entered its first deal with Tekelec’s Eagle 5 platform, to enhance consumer offerings on the network, just as Zain Nigeria, has migrated into an all-Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia system (IMS).

A press statement from Zain Nigeria signed by the public relations manager, Mr. Emmanuel Otokhine, said that with this development, the network signaling, mobile messaging and performance management company have been taken to the next level.

According to him, Zain Group which provides mobile services in 23 countries and prides itself as the world’s fourth-largest telecommunications company based on geographic presence selected Tekelec based on the technology’s market-proven reliability and ability to scale to the growing demands of global service providers.

Another important feature in Zain’s selection of Tekelec’s Eagle 5 platform was Tekelec’s support of SIGTRAN (SS7 signaling over IP), which is a stepping stone for cost-effectively migrating to an all-IP network.

He said that SIGTRAN enables service providers on the public-switched telephone networks (PSTNs) to use an underlying IP transport vehicle, thereby allowing them to offer their subscribers multimedia services through the existing network.

“Zain Nigeria completed the Eagle 5 deployment in fourth quarter of 2008,” he disclosed. Otokhine quoted the Technical Director for Zain Nigeria, Mr. John Earley, as saying that the project has been managed by Tekelec in an exceptionally professional and consistent manner even when faced with integration into a challenging environment such as Nigeria.

“I can say with confidence that Tekelec’s handling of this project from start to now has been faultless. We are looking forward to a seamless integration into our existing core and anticipate substantial improvements in network signaling performance,” he said.

ITRealms Online recalled that in 2007 and 2008, 37 of Tekelec’s 40 new customers purchased the Eagles 5 platform across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and the Middle East. The company’s solutions are now deployed in 103 countries.

Also speaking on the development, the Tekelec’s senior vice president of global sales, Mr. Wolrad Claudy, noted that on the global basis, Tekelec is experiencing strong success with its Eagle 5 platform.

“Customers consistently cite Tekelec’s commitment to innovation and how that’s demonstrated in the Eagle product family’s constant evolution as a platform to support their migration to next-gen and IMS networks.

In the majority of cases, including Zain Nigeria – the Eagle 5 platform displaced another that could not reliably support the service provider’s migration plans in a flexible and scalable manner,” he said.

ICANN publishes responses @ Mexico meeting

Coordinating agency for the global internet resource, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has published the responses of 96 questions asked through an online ‘question box’ in February and March.

ICANN also said that the question box went live two-and-a-half weeks prior to the commencement of its 34th international public meeting in Mexico City.

The aim, ICANN said, is to give members of the community an opportunity to ask questions of ICANN’s staff and board without having to be physically present at the various public fora.

This approach facilitates both remote participation and increased participation from attendees who prefer not to address a room directly.

In total, 96 questions were asked through the question box. The three topics raised most frequently were ;1 - ICANN as an organization; 2 - Registrars and the RAA; and 3- The Applicant Guidebook and new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs).

Therefore, ICANN staff, last weekend, posted responses to those questions, which could be viewed at: http://icann.org/en/participate/mexico-city-public-forum-response.html

All those who asked questions will receive an email containing the link; the responses will also be published on the ICANN blog and on the Mexico City meeting website.

The question box process will be repeated at the Sydney meeting in June with a few changes and improvements derived from feedback received this time around.

Senator Anyanwu lauds Galaxy over NICEP

Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Sylvester Anyanwu, has given kudos to the management of Galaxy Backbone plc for successfully implementing an increased percentage of the National Information, Communication and Education Programme (NICEP) of the federal government.

NICEP is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy intervention by the Federal Government targeted at the realization of its e-governance and Millennium Development Goals objectives.

This intervention also was designed to provide the benefits of ICT to all areas of the country particularly hard-to-reach remote areas and underserved communities through the deployment of 5,000 Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) nodes nationwide.

Anyanwu who spoke recently after a tour of the NICEP Network Operating Centre (NOC) in Abuja, built and managed by Galaxy Backbone Plc, expressed delight with what he saw.

The Senate Committee Chairman, who was at the facility to inspect the progress made so far in the implementation of the project and find out ways his committee, could assist Galaxy towards delivering the NICEP project objectives as envisaged by the Federal Government ICT intervention policy.

He was conducted round the state-of-the-art facility by the Managing Director, Galaxy Backbone, Mr. Gerald Ilukwe and the NOC operations manager, Mr. Dauda Oyeleye.

“I am very impressed with the quality of your Network Operating Centre from where as I understand the company is currently providing connectivity, co-location and other enhanced quality services to its customers including Government MDAs and driving digital access to rural communities and the education sector,” he said.

He advised Galaxy to create more awareness and enlightenment about its facility to the various Governments including States and Local Governments as well as elected politicians for them to take advantage of the facilities already in place for the development of their people.

Earlier in his comment, Mr. Ilukwe used the analogy of a water works and a reservoir which must be in place prior to the laying of water pipes and the actual supply of water to the consumers to reaffirm the fact that the NOC which is the heart of the NICEP project accounts for 50 per cent of the project implementation, whereas the equipment procurement and installation make up 30 per cent.

He also informed the senator that the implementation of the project experienced some delay especially in securing the land allocated to Galaxy since August 2007.

There was also site readiness issues based on stipulated criteria for rolling out remote sites.

According to Ilukwe, NICEP project actually kicked off in July 2008 with arrival of the first batch of NICEP equipment at Lagos ports.

During the facility tour, Senator Anyanwu and his team were shown the array of top of the breed IT equipment installed at Galaxy’s Network Operating Centre as part of the NICEP network.

The team equally visited the company’s Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) project through which Galaxy enables the delivery of multiple, live synchronous e-learning lessons to an unlimited number of geographically dispersed students through either Personal Computer (PC) or Television (TV)-based classrooms using a friendly student/instructor interaction.

The IDL project combines high quality bi-directional video, voice and educational tools like slide projection, whiteboard, chat and application projection.

Telecom Answers, NCC partner on co-location forum

Plans are in high-gear for the hosting of the first-ever high-level business forum on co-location and infrastructure sharing of telecommunications facilities, being put together by Telecom Answers Associates (TAA) and the Nigerian Communications Committee (NCC).

Whereas TAA is a reputed telecommunications consulting firm, NCC is the industry regulator in the nation’s telecommunications sector.

Disclosing this to ITRealms Online, last weekend in Lagos, the managing consultant, Telecom answers Associates, Mr. Titi Omo-Ettu, said that the forum has become imperative in the face of emerging technologies.

He also said that the context of emerging technologies demands strategic business opportunities and regulatory issues arising from them.

Omo-Ettu explained that the forum would examine the place of co-location and infrastructure sharing within the telecom industry in Nigeria as well as determine options available to the industry to improve on quality of service (QoS), while fast-tracking service expansion nationwide.

Equally, he said that the forum is being strategically rooted to enable equipment vendors and service providers to showcase their products and services.

According to him, TAA has been holding consultations with senior industry players on the need to keep the tempo of developments in the sector sustained, especially as the world journey over the present economic crunch, which experts predict will change the dive hopefully before the end of next year.

Hence, he envisaged that 2011, which is an election year for Nigeria, will be a turning point when those who will mount the saddle of leadership should be Information and Communication Technology (ICT) savvy.

It is to this end, he pointed, that TAA decided to start now to synergize with willing industry players in the coming months to keep them abreast of values on emerging technologies which are capable of brightening the telecommunications industry, which is the true driver of the economy as of today.

Stressing that that was what gave birth to the concept of the forthcoming high-level stakeholders’ forum on co-location.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission had kindly agreed to collaborate with us and chances are that we find other interested players to partner with us on this and other subject areas as time go on,” he said.

Zain introduces One4One 50% offer

As part of its efforts to make the world a wonderful place, a leading mobile operator in Africa and the Middle East, Zain, last week introduced One4One offer in the country, which affords Nigerians the opportunity to talk more for less at 50 per cent discount.

He also said that Zain introduction of the offer at this Easter period was because of the company’s desire to assist Nigerians to stay in touch with family, friends and business associates despite the effect of the current global economic realities.

“With Zain One4One, customers get a bonus minute when they make a minute call to any Zain line. For instance, if you make a 2-minute call to any Zain line, you only pay for one while Zain pays for the other minute within the same call,” he said.

In addition, he explained, “If a customer makes 10 minutes call to any Zain line, he only pays for 5 minutes while Zain takes care of the other remaining charge within that call.”

Microsoft fined N57.1bn in favour of Uniloc

Microsoft Corporation has been lately awash with litigations, just as one of them attracted a grant of $388 million (about N57.1 billion) as ordered a federal jury in Rhode Island in favour of Uniloc.

This is coming as, TomTom, another technology company has responded to Microsoft’s patent suit by filing a counter-claim of its own against the software maker.

According to the report by CNET, in the suit, Uniloc alleged that Microsoft used its patented technology as part of the software giant’s product-activation methods, even as a federal jury in Rhode Island found that Windows XP, Office XP and Windows Server 2003 infringed on a Uniloc patent.

But sources at Microsoft indicated that the software giant intends to appeal the ruling favour of Uniloc, expressing disappointment over the ruling.

Affirming Microsoft position, its spokesman Mr. Jack Evans was quoted as denying the infringement, saying that the patent is invalid and this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported.

“We will ask the court to overturn the verdict,” he said.

Microsoft had initially won a summary judgment ruling, which would have ended the case in its favour, but Uniloc appealed that ruling and a federal appeals court last year ruled that the case needed to go to trial with regard to two counts. The trial began on March 23.

Meanwhile, TomTom a Global Positioning System (GPS) device maker, based in the Netherlands, has filed a countersuit in the United States (US) District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia last Monday.

TomTom officials said, Microsoft’s Streets and Trips products infringe on four patents it owns related to vehicle-navigation software.

In a statement, Microsoft lawyer Horacio Gutierrez said the company is still in the process of reviewing TomTom’s court filing.

“As has been the case for more than a year, we remain committed to a licensing solution, although we will continue to press ahead with the complaints we initiated in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington and the International Trade Commission,” he said.

ITRealms Online recalls that late February, this year, Microsoft had sued TomTom, accusing the company of infringing on eight patents.

The suit was notable because it included for the first time in a court filing, Microsoft’s long-asserted position that the Linux kernel infringes on Microsoft patents.
