ITU reckons with 70 years of television standards - ITREALMS

The United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has reckoned with 70 years of television standards, as the world marks World Television Day (WTD) reports ITREALMS.

World Television Day is marked globally on 21 November, recognizes the medium as a major source of news, information, education and entertainment. As television broadcasting increases its footprint globally, streaming onto multiple portable devices, TV has become an integral part of life, accounting for 80 per cent of all consumer Internet traffic.

ITU, since it first released technical standards for television 70 years ago in 1949, has developed the globally harmonized standards that have progressively enhanced television viewing experience in terms of both visual and audio quality. From early standards for colour TV to developing parameters for 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio television, ITU has championed the switch to digital TV broadcasting and High Definition Television (HDTV), enabling more services, better picture quality and improved coverage owing to an increase in transmitted bandwidth capacity. Building further on the superior colour fidelity of ITU's Ultra-High Definition Television (UHDTV), ITU introduced High Dynamic Range Television (HDR-TV) bringing increased realism to images.

As 5G services complying with ITU’s IMT-2020 spectrum allocations and standards (currently being addressed by the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt) are progressively rolled out over the coming years, the convergence of traditional broadcasting and Internet services could lead to the further merging of media content, data, and applications using broadband networks delivered over a combination of terrestrial, satellite and Internet platforms.

ITU further said that these “Global Platforms” may one day facilitate delivery of content to end-users on a wide range of devices and receiving platforms, using both broadcasting and non-broadcasting technologies.

Nigeria Idol 5: Brenda, Sther get eviction

Two contestants, namely Brenda and Sther, have been evicted at the on-going Etisalat television reality show, Nigerian Idol Season Five at the OMG's Dream Studios reports ITRealms.   

The contestants, ITRealms gathered while standing before the judges and uncertain of what awaited them, clutched their fists, with some only able to stare at the comfortless roof while others attempted to mask their emotions by keeping a straight face.

The waiting however, was soon over as show anchor, Illrymz, polled out the two evicted contestants for the race,  leaving the others, K-Peace, Dolu, Nex2, Classic Tunez and Preye, through to the next stage.

ITRealms also reports that Brenda was eventually evicted after polling the second least number of votes, which was a contrasting situation to the previous week's results during which she polled the highest number of votes. While for Sther, the eviction put paid to her spectacular run on the show after previously been evicted during the Group Stage and Top 9, but returned on each occasion following the application of the Judges' Wild Card and Lifeline intervention measures.

In a displeasured statement, Brenda said her participation in similar TV reality programmes in the past offered her a huge wealth of experience as well as added pressure.

"I did not foresee this coming. I had a lot of people I wanted to prove a point to, but that has been cut short. It is just painful, but I am not disappointed," she said.

ITRealms learnt that until their eviction, Brenda and Sther were two of the show's three best stage performers alongside K-Peace with very impressive showings posted week in, week out.

Nigeria Idol 5: Final eleven up for Eviction

The Nigeria idol television reality show season five, has now reached her third and final batch group stage performance with a final set of eleven contestants put up for eviction, ITRealms reports.  

ITRealms gathered that the contestants which were all pooled from the top 30 performed before the show’s celebrity judges, at the weekend, at the OMG Dreams studios, Lagos.

Speaking further on the overall performances on the night, ITRealms learnt that Darey, one the show’s judges, was full of commendations for all the contestants, “This set of eleven is not bad at all. They tried their best to put in the work-some of them sleepless night and over singing killed them today, but some really came shining too. Some of them took the songs that did not suit their kinds of voice, but that happens, and it’s a competition. Somebody must make mistakes for somebody else to win. It’s not always in the winner’s hands alone, it’s a mixture of things such as wrong an opponent’s mistakes, wrong choice of songs, etc.” he said.

ITRealms gathered that the contestants up for eviction are Precious, Mauriz, Ayoka, K-peace, David, Meyar, Sopriye, Jaytunes, Uloma, Oluchi and Orubo.

Although all eyes are on four of the contestants, namely K-Peace, Precious, Ayoka and Sopriye, but as ITRealms learnt, voting opens on Sunday night and will close 11.59 pm on Wednesday and the first three contestants with the highest number of votes will automatically qualify for the top 12 while the evicted eight will hope for the judges’ three wild cards at the conclusion of the group stage phase in a week’s time.
