The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Adanma Onuegbu, had at a forum in Lagos encouraged young girls to take up the challenge and not look at gender disparity as a hindrance to achieving their goals.

International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day affirmed by the United Nations. The Day was declared to raise awareness of issues facing girls internationally. These issues border on education, nutrition, child marriage, legal and medical rights. The Day of the Girl helps raise awareness, not only on the issues that girls face, but what is likely to happen when those problems are solved. For example, educating girls helps reduce the rate of child marriage, diseases, and helps strengthen the economy by helping girls have access to higher paying jobs. So the awareness is not only on the problems, but the eventual benefits when the challenges are resolved.

International Day of the Girl Child (Day of the Girl) is celebrated annually on October 11 to highlight issues concerning the gender inequality facing young girls. This year's theme is “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.”

According to the Chief Executive Officer of eBusiness Life Communication and convener of the event, Mrs. Ufuoma Emuophedaro: “Between inequities in secondary education to protection issues, adolescent girls are uniquely impacted and should benefit from targeted investments and programmes that address their distinct needs. Investing in adolescent girls can have a formidable ripple effect to create a better world by 2030.” She further called on corporate bodies and individuals to join the march towards highlighting the potentials and unique challenges of adolescent girls.

According to UNICEF (2017) there are 1.1 billion girls, who are a source of power, energy, and creativity and this year’s International Day of the Girl (IDG) on October 11 will mark the beginning of a year-long effort to spur global attention and action to the challenges and opportunities girls face in choosing careers.

The campaign also seeks to break the cycle of discrimination and violence and promotes the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights, and recognizing also that empowering girls requires their active participation in decision-making processes and the active support and engagement of their parents, legal guardians, families and care providers, as well as boys and men and the wider community.

The 2018 edition of the campaign, which seeks to position the girl-child for the future, is billed to hold on Thursday, October 11, 2018 and eBusiness Life Communications Limited, publishers of eBusiness Life magazine, a monthly consumer-centric ICT magazine, is billed to host this campaign in Nigeria.

The former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had said, "Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right it is a social and economic imperative. Where women are educated and empowered, economies are more productive and strong. Where women are fully represented, societies are more peaceful and stable."

Expected guests at the event include the Deputy Governor, Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule; Lagos Commissioner for Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande; CEO, Signal Alliance, Mrs. Adanma Onuegbu; Managing Director of MainOne Cable Company, Ms. Funke Opeke; Country Manager of Google Nigeria, Ms. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor; Chief Executive Officer of Customer Centricity, Mrs. Uloma Umeano, among other top executives.

Int’l Girls in ICT 2017: Vodacom partners eBusinessLife

Vodacom Business Nigeria has thrown its weight behind the commeration of the International Girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) 2017 being organized by eBusinessLife in Lagos, reports ITRealms.

The event which is on its sixth edition, ITRealms reports is gathering steam as key stakeholders in the industry have lined up to partner with eBusiness Life Limited in its bid to create awareness among young girls on the need to take up careers in ICT.

A press statement made available to ITRealms by the chief executive officer of eBusiness Life Communication, Mrs. Ufuoma Emuophedaro, said that Vodacom Business Nigeria, one of the major partners in the previous editions of the event has indicated their interest to be part of this year’s campaign.

She also said, this year's event, scheduled to hold in Lagos on Tuesday May 23, 2017 at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, marks the 6th edition since eBusiness Life joined the annual campaign in 2012; an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) geared at sensitizing young girls and encouraging them to take up ICT as a career.

The Marketing Manager at Vodacom Business Nigeria, Anne Ihugba, was quoted as saying that Vodacom’s support is borne out of the quest to ensure that the Nigerian girl child is presented with all options available in shaping her career and ensuring that the profession of ICT is demystified among females.

Vodacom, she said, has consistently been engaged in the development of human capital and in contributing positively to the community in which it operates through various initiatives.

“The partnership with eBusinessLife is one of such vehicles that will help the operator achieve its goals,” she said.

Ihugba further said that at Vodacom, one of the business principles is contributing to communities in which the company operates, so this event is one of the many avenues, they believe, fulfils part of this obligation.

“Based on this, we are happy to inform you that we will partner with your organization this year as a sponsor,” she said, stressing that the winning school will be invited to a one day Field Trip to Vodacom Business Nigeria to learn about new technologies and how they can contribute to the development of Nigeria using these technologies.

According to the Mrs. Emuophedaro, the need to sensitise young girls is premised on the fact that the society has unconsciously relegated the female gender and delegated careers in technical fields, especially in ICT, to their male counterparts.

Effort, she said, should be made to introduce young girls to career opportunities in technical fields in both the public and private sectors to help them have a wider range of options and contribute their quota in the industry and in the development of the economy.

She stated that the International Girls in ICT Day workshop and attending campaign will further open up opportunities for girls in ICT sector.

As part of the 2017 event, there will be students’ training on basic robotics and graphic design competition between female students from select secondary schools, roundtable discussions, interactive and motivational talk from renowned women ICT professionals, among others.

The event will also form a platform for participating companies to network and find areas of complementarity.
