The chairman of Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, Dr. Layi Fatona, has led a delegation of senior executives, including Managing Director & CEO, Mr. Tony Attah, on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, at his office in Abuja, reports ITREALMS.

The visit marks a significant step in Renaissance’s ongoing engagement with key stakeholders after the March 2025 acquisition of SPDC 30% shares.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, in company of some senior officials of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) on Tuesday undertook a tour of facilities at Brightwaters Energy Limited, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, reports ITREALMS.

The tour to the company’s facilities at Choba, Port Harcourt, and Emohua in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State was a follow up to the NCDMB’s boss earlier visit to the company and some pipe coating facilities in May 2024. At that visit he pledged the Board’s support for local service companies, giving them opportunities in the oil and gas industry and creating jobs in the economy.

The Director General of the National Oil Spillage Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, along with his senior management team, conducted a critical assessment visit to the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Port Harcourt.

This urgent visit aimed to evaluate SPDC's comprehensive efforts in managing the recent oil spill incident in Bonny, which subsequently affected the Oyorokot community in Andoni Local Government Area.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC JV) - Operator of the NNPC Limited, SPDC, TotalEnergies and Nigerian Agip Oil Company Joint Venture– has, announced the donation of US$1 million to support efforts to provide relief to over half a million people displaced in flood impacted communities of Borno State.

“The donation will go into the procurement and distribution of relief materials and medical supplies for displaced residents who are now in urgent need of critical aid,” said Managing Director, SPDC, and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, adding that a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), local to the region with understanding of working with displaced people, will manage the distribution of the materials in collaboration with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency.

Imo gov, Ihedioha pledges support for SPDC’s gas project - ITREALMS

The Imo State Governor, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has pledged the support of the government and people of the state for the success of the multi-billion dollar Assa North/Ohaji South Gas development project, reports ITREALMS.

Speaking during a visit to him in his office last week by the leadership of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the governor said, “We are determined to work with you to build the plant and to help Imo State fulfil its quota to the nation’s domestic gas aspiration. We are dedicated to making life meaningful for our people and to making Imo State investor friendly. Imo State shall partner with you. We have a civilised state and our hands are wide open to welcome Shell back to your original home in Nigeria.”

SPDC’s Managing Director and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, who led the SPDC delegation, described the gas project in the state as the company’s “most important project right now” adding, “We are committed to making the Assa North Gas Project an exemplary one.”

The project, according to Okunbor, is key to driving the Federal Government of Nigeria’s ambition of marching away from a mono-economy through diverse industrial growth. “It is premier amongst the Seven Critical Gas Projects initiative led by the Ministry of Petroleum and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).”

The Assa North/Ohaji South gas project is a joint venture project involving SPDC, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Total E&P Nigeria Limited (TEPNL), Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and SEPLAT, a leading indigenous producer.

SPDC is expected to manage the upstream operations to produce 600 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, half of which will be processed at a new SPDC JV processing plant and the remaining half sent to SEPLAT for processing at the company’s new gas processing plant. The combined volume translates to almost 2,400 MW of potential electricity generation if used for power generation.

At the meeting with the governor were the deputy governor, Gerald Iroha; Chairman of Imo State Oil and Gas Committee, John Ottih; and SPDC’s Directors — Toyin Olagunju and Igo Weli.

Kechi Okwuchi, Sosoliso crash survivor on ‘Thank You’ visit to SPDC

Remember Miss Kechi Okwuchi, the Sosoliso crash survivor, was on ‘Thank You’ visit to the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC), reports ITRealms.

At SPDC, ITRealms gathered that there were emotional scenes as Miss Kechi Okwuchi, who survived the 2005 Sosoliso plane crash that claimed many lives visited had end of January, expressed gratitude for the medical and financial assistance the company rendered to her after the tragic incident.

Kechi, accompanied by her father’s friend, Mazi Victor Okoronkwo and her aunty, Mrs. Uloma Umeano were received by Mr. Osagie Okunbor, Managing Director, SPDC and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria.

Ms Kechi, who was returning from school in Abuja to Port Harcourt, survived the crash but suffered third-degree burns. When her plight came to the notice of SPDC, the company promptly stepped in and ensured that she was air-lifted to South Africa for immediate medical attention and treatment.

Later, ITRealms also gathered, Kechi later moved to the United States where she underwent several surgeries with SPDC’s continued financial support.

According to Kechi’s father, Mr. Okwuchi, in a letter read by Mazi Okoronkwo noted that “On December 10, 2005, Shell intervened, notwithstanding the medical uncertainty to save life regardless of cost; intervention propelled by a corporate policy that puts life above else. We thank and applaud you for it."

Kechi further declared at the ‘thank you’ mission “I am incredibly grateful and I walk through every day of my life knowing that I am here today because of the amount of effort SPDC put into making sure that I stayed alive…you came when all looked dark and you shone a light of hope into my life.” 

She shared how her family would remain grateful to SPDC for ensuring she received the best medical care available.

‘I have never seen this kind of kindness from a corporation before,’ she said, and later presented a certificate of recognition from the Shriners Hospitals for Children (Galveston, Texas) to SPDC for its thoughtful and generous contribution to the hospital.

Mr. Okunbor responded “it was instinctive for us as an organisation to react the way we did as the most important thing for us then was to save and preserve lives. Even though we were not directly involved, the leadership decided that we had to intervene and do all we could as a company to help and today, I am happy we did.”

60 Niger Delta students gain SPDC full scholarships

The latest batch of 60 children from the Niger Delta have been awarded the special secondary school scholarship of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Joint Venture, under its Cradle to Career which covers tuition and all other bills for six years in four of the topmost private secondary schools in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, reports ITRealms.

The 60 benefiting students drawn from Brookstone Secondary School, Jephthah Comprehensive College, Archdeacon Brown Educational Centre (ABEC) and Bloombreed High School in Port Harcourt were placed on full scholarship for their secondary education, after a two-week orientation programme with introductory courses in academics, character and psychology.

ITRealms also reports that the students are the seventh set of beneficiaries and they bring the total number of beneficiaries since inception of the Cradle to Career programme to 410.

The Managing Director of SPDC and Chairman, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, said, this year, the first set of beneficiaries completed their secondary education and the report available indicated that about all of them recorded excellent performance in the school certificate and unified tertiary matriculation examinations.

“It means the aims of the programme are being achieved,” said Okunbor who was represented by the General Manager, External Relations SPDC, Mr. Igo Weli, at the award ceremony in Port Harcourt at the weekend, the MD said SPDC and its joint venture partners have sustained the scholarship initiative despite the current economic challenges because they see education as a right for every child and not a privilege.

Dr Patricia Ogbonnaya, Mrs Elizabeth Alagoa and Dr Moses Onoriode Bragiwa, representatives of the Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states Commissioners for Education respectively, extolled the Cradle to Career scholarship scheme for complementing their governments’ investments in education. They praised the transparent selection process and the human capital development benefits of the programme to the region.

“SPDC has a passion for investing in people and we are happy to report that students in the programme have over the years been on the top of their classes in their respective schools. We thank Shell and their joint venture partners for helping to ameliorate the problems of the Niger Delta,” said Dame Christie Toby, the proprietress of one of the implementing schools.

The SPDC JV launched the Cradle to Career initiative in 2010 to provide for bright indigent students and improve on the positive results of its other portfolio of scholarship schemes for local and international undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Shell Companies in Nigeria have a long history of supporting education through scholarships and other initiatives. In 2015, a total of $10.1 million was invested in scholarships by the SPDC Joint Venture and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo.) Grants were awarded to 930 secondary school students and 638 university undergraduates in 2015, with a total of 10,401 (secondary) and 3,532 (university) grants given over the last five years.

SPDC increases gas production in Agbada field, Eastern Niger Delta

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) Joint Venture has said it has increased gas production capacity from Agbada field in the Eastern Niger Delta, reports ITRealms.

This, the company said is in support of government’s aspiration of increasing domestic gas production for manufacturing and power generation.

General Manager Projects at SPDC, Mr. Toyin Olagunju, said some 10 million standard cubic feet of non-associated gas per day (MMscf/d) was produced from the Agbada Early Gas Production Facility (EGPF), into the eastern domestic gas network on March 8, 2016 and has already ramped up to 20MMscf/d of gas, with 1,500 barrels per day of oil.
 
A peak production of 40MMscf/d is expected to be achieved, in addition to oil production of about 2,500 barrels per day. The milestone comes as SPDC JV’s Afam VI - with 650MW capacity - continues to deliver power to the national grid.
 
“We’re pleased to support efforts towards increasing gas supply for manufacturers and power plants. We’re also pleased that the project was delivered in record time - 14 months from initiation to first gas – within budget and most importantly, safely. We acknowledge the support of NAPIMS and other JV partners, without which the milestone would not have been possible,” he said.
 
Olagunju also said that the additional gas will further boost gas availability on the eastern domestic gas network and will be available to enhance power generation by over 150MW, stressing that the early gas project was initiated in January 2015 pending the completion of the main Agbada non-associated gas plant.
 
ITRealms recalls that SPDC pioneered the production and delivery of gas to domestic consumers and export markets. Just as early this year, SPDC signed a gas sale agreement with the Bayelsa State Government under which it will sell gas to the Bayelsa Development and Investment Corporation (BDIC) for the purpose of power supply to the Kolo Creek Gas Turbine.

Presently, ITRealms further gathered from Corporate Media Relations Manager, Precious Okolobo that Shell is the only international oil and gas company to have set up a gas distribution business in the country, Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG).
