The Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO) has strongly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following his executive directive ordering the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into global technology giants and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms operating within Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.

The NPO noted that this decisive presidential intervention is a direct result of a joint petition and high-level advocacy spearheaded by its constituent bodies, which include the Newspaper Proprietors' Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Big tech conglomerates and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms operating within the country have come under the direct radar of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), reports ITREALMS.

This follows a formal directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ordering an immediate investigation into allegations of anti-competitive practices, unlawful exploitation of local news content, and unfair market conduct.

Key industry actors converged Tuesday in Lagos to assess the current state of competition in Nigeria’s telecommunications market, with a focus on the voice and data segments that continue to drive subscriber growth and revenue across the sector, reports ITREALMS.

The meeting, held as a stakeholders’ forum at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, brought together the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as technical partners in the study.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has recanted earlier invitation to Air Peace, saying it was simply for an inquiry to understand its price methodology and respond to consumers complaints. 

ITREALMS recalls that a few days back, FCCPC had proclaimed its searchlight on three sectors, namely banking, telecoms and aviation with investigation centred on customers' complaints with targets on GTBank, MTN and Air Peace in that order.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched a major inquiry into widespread consumer complaints against leading players in the banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors, with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), MTN Nigeria and AirPeace on spotlight respectively, over alleged violations, reports ITREALMS.

Director, Corporate Affairs, FCCPC, Ondaje Ijagwu, informed 
ITREALMS on Sunday that the inquisitions, would commence on Tuesday, December 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively, are intended to address issues of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential consumer rights violations.

The Katsina State Police Command has arrested one Ms Muhibat Taiwo Abdulsalam, a staff of the Federal Competitive Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Katsina branch, over alleged murder of her boss, Mr. Julius Haruna, 57, in his office, over suspected inflated job, reports ITREALMS.

The Police also confirmed that Ms Muhibat is notorious for fighting previous four directors before the deceased, who is the Northwest Zonal Coordinator of the commission in his office and accused him of sexual harassment, last Wednesday.
