A recent meeting between the five South-East Education Commissioners and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Enugu has sparked outrage, particularly due to the exclusion of Alex Onyia, the education technology expert who first uncovered discrepancies in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, reports ITREALMS.

The controversy stems from allegations that the JAMB exam error disproportionately affected students from the South-East, while South-West and Northern states in the same Lagos Cluster remained unaffected.

The Oyo State governor, 'Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, swore-in the duo of Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi and Miss Wasilat Adegoke as Commissioners for Health and Youths & Sport, respectively, charging them to key into his vision for the sustainable development of the state.

Makinde equally charged the new commissioners not to be afraid of taking actions in their respective Ministries, stating that it is important for all members of the state's Executive Council to study and understand the objectives of the Roadmap for the Sustainable Development of Oyo State, 2023-2027 and to key into the same in their respective Ministries.

A civil society coalition, the Alliance for Deepening Democracy (A4DD), has called on newly elected State Governors to ensure gender equity in the constitution of the executive councils of their different States while also addressing other inclusion gaps through the appointment of representatives of marginalized groups such as youths and persons with disabilities as commissioners.

The Alliance also urged Governors that are yet to appoint their commissioners to take urgent steps to do so in the light of the deadline for the nomination of commissioners stipulated in Section 192(6) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which provides that “the nomination of any person to the office of a Commissioner for confirmation by the House of Assembly of a State shall be done within sixty days after the date the Governor has taken the oath of Office.”

PMB names NCC chairman, commissioners, sends list to Senate

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the nomination of new chairman for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other commissioners, just as he forwarded them to the Senate for ratification, reports ITRealms.

A press statement by the Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina on August 2, 2016 and made available to ITRealms revealed that these positions include the Chairman, Executive Commissioner, and Non-Executive Commissioners of NCC.

A letter to that effect sent to President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Adesina said that Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye (South West) was nominated as Chairman, while Mr. Sunday Dare (South West) was honoured with the post of Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Management.

Other nominee are Non-Executive Commissioners and include Aliyu Sa’idu Abubakar (North East), Clement Omeiza Baiye (North Central), Chief Okoi Ofem Obono Obla (South South), Pastor Ezekiel Yissa (North Central) and Senator Ifeanyi Ararume (South East).

The nominations are in accordance with Section 8(1) of the Nigerian Communications Commission Act 2003.

Breaking News: NCC sends names of potential Commissioners to Presidency

In fulfillment of its statutory obligations, the leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has sent list of potential Six Commissioners and one Executive Commissioner to the Presidency, reports ITRealms.

Presently, there is only one Executive Commissioner (Technical Services) Engr. Ubale A. Maska who has been working with the Executive Vice Chairman at the Commission, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta.

Disclosing this in Lagos at a one-day forum on Corporate Governance while responding to question by ITRealms, the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, said that a list has been compiled by his office and forwarded to the Presidency for consideration.

He also agreed that the appointment of these commissioners are essential and must cut across the six-geo-political zones of the country in addition to the two executive commissioners, would immensely facilitate the work of the Commission.

According to him, it would be fool handy to be discussing corporate governance in a forum like this without first of all ensuring that the NCC is in good standing in line with the statutes setting up the Commission, hence the list has since been dispatched to Presidency.

ITRealms gathered that the leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission by law should consist of nine Commissioners made up of six Non-executive members, including the Chairman, representing each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria and three Executive members, including the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive and two Executive Commissioners.

He, therefore, urged corporate organisations within the sector to ensure compliance because NCC is now taking the issue more seriously, especially looking at Code of Corporate Governance for the telecoms industry published in 2014.

As said by him, the Code consists of 12 principles and was developed to protect the interest of investors and stakeholders in the industry as well as promote time-valued principles of accountability, responsibility, transparency, integrity and ethical conduct.

“No doubt, the Code has expanded the frontiers of accountability in the operation of companies in the sector,” he said, emphasizing however, that challenges still exist and cited for instance that the Code is declaratory in nature and implementation was initially voluntary across the industry, leading to violations.

Exclusive: NCC without board is not productive - Omo-Ettu

Seasoned telecommunication engineer and chief executive officer of the Telecom Answers Associates (TAA), Mr. Titi Omo-Ettu, has said that running the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) without its full board of Commissioners is counter-productive, reports ITRealms.

Reacting to an obvious long wait in getting new board of commissioners for the telecommunication regulator, since the last one was disbanded, Omo-Ettu who prides himself as broadband evangelist, condemned the current setting of President Muhammadu Buhari literally, shutting down NCC because of this.

According to him, technically, it is the board of Commissioners of NCC alongside the Executive Vice Chairman that should be wooing investors and not Mr. President, for the sector. Stressing that what is happening now is not being productive.

He pointed out that there is no world –class investor that knows his onion that trades in a market where the regulator is not independent or literally non-existence.

Omo-Ettu who described himself as a Buharist - Buhari follower also said they, followers are those more likely to advice Mr. President on the way forward for the country and sectors of interest like telecommunications.

“It will not be productive for supporters of the President to pretend that all is well when they are not,” he noted.

As a Buharist, Omo-Ettu said he believes that the way to help the President is not to support him blindly and take whoever talks ill of him as enemy. 

“Many think sniff-nothing, see-nothing, say-nothing is the best way to support him. I disagree with that option,” Omo-Ettu insisted.

Nine months, he said, is enough time to have a direction of Buhari’s leadership and economic path.

“Some argue that what is wrong with Nigeria cannot be fixed in nine months. That is not the argument. The argument is that in nine months, a clear direction should have emerged,” he emphasised.
