Africa Finance Corporation Appoints CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso as Board Chairman - ITREALMS

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has announced the appointment of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, as Chairman of its Board of Directors, reports ITREALMS.
He succeeds the immediate-past Chair, Ireti Samuel-Ogbu, who served the multilateral infrastructure finance institution during her tenure and continues her service as a board member, according to an official statement released in Lagos.
Mr. Cardoso brings decades of executive experience across international banking, investment management, macroeconomics, and public administration.

Since assuming office as CBN Governor in September 2023, he has led key monetary and financial sector reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, streamlining foreign exchange operations, and completing bank recapitalization frameworks to strengthen Nigeria’s economic resilience.

Prior to his central bank stewardship, Mr. Cardoso served for 12 years as Chairman of Citibank Nigeria and was former Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State.

s He holds degrees from Aston University and the Harvard Kennedy School, where he previously served on the Alumni Board.

Welcoming the appointment, President and Chief Executive Officer of AFC, Samaila Zubairu, emphasized that Mr. Cardoso’s financial sector leadership will provide strategic direction as the corporation expands infrastructure financing, drives industrialization, and executes its long-term The Africa We Build 2050 vision.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Cardoso noted that AFC’s track record in mobilizing capital remains crucial for building the productive capacity, job creation, and industrial foundation required to stabilize African economies.

The appointment comes as AFC continues to scale its continental portfolio, having recently achieved financial close on the $753 million Lobito Corridor Railway Project in Angola, backed a $600 million facility for the Dangote Group’s fertilizer expansion program, and committed $300 million alongside Vision Invest into WIOCC Group to accelerate digital infrastructure expansion across Africa.
