The Federal Government of Nigeria has set machinery in motion to deepen strategic engagement with State Governors and frontline emergency responders to fast-track the nationwide adoption of "112" as the country’s unified national emergency toll-free number, reports ITREALMS.
The collaborative meeting comes on the heels of a recent resolution by the National Economic Council (NEC), also chaired by the Vice President, which formally ratified the adoption of the 112 emergency digits across all tiers of government and relevant public safety agencies.
The initiative is part of an aggressive policy push to overhaul Nigeria's emergency response architecture and establish a seamless, unified framework for crisis management.
To drive the deployment, NEC had previously approved the setup of a multi-agency implementation committee and programme coordination secretariat, which will be jointly spearheaded by the Office of the Vice President and the NCC.
Addressing the telecommunications regulator's delegation, Vice President Shettima directed the immediate formulation of an actionable roadmap to guarantee that Nigeria migrates entirely to a single, interconnected emergency number in alignment with global best practices.
Furthermore, Senator Shettima instructed the NCC to forge a tight technical and operational synergy with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), citing the agency's institutional expertise in nationwide disaster mitigation, relief operations, and rehabilitation.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the safety infrastructure, the Vice President assured that necessary funding would be aggressively mobilized through a collaborative funding model involving the National Economic Council and the private sector.
He, however, noted that success hinges on high-level institutional buy-in and unwavering commitment from first responders.
Earlier in his presentation, the NCC Governing Board Chairman, Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, briefed the Vice President on the technical milestones recorded by the regulator. He revealed that the Commission has successfully leveraged advanced telecommunications technology to establish 35 Emergency Communications Centres (ECCs) across the federation.
Olorunnimbe expressed appreciation to the Vice President for providing political leadership and for facilitating high-level engagement with critical stakeholders, particularly the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), to secure state-level compliance.
He emphasized that while the tech infrastructure is largely in place, state executives must step up to ensure optimal maintenance and localized integration.
"We now need greater commitment from governors across the country to provide the necessary support and maintain the infrastructure the Commission has put in place to ensure that the centres function optimally," Olorunnimbe stated.
The NCC Boss warned that the efficiency of the 112 system relies entirely on the responsiveness of the downstream security and medical agencies linked to the infrastructure.
"If someone calls for police intervention and, for some reason, the call does not reach the police, that person will not receive the help they need. We need commitment at every level of all response agencies, from top to bottom, including the Nigeria Police Force, ambulance services across the states, and at the national level, NEMA," he said.
Olorunnimbe concluded by calling on all stakeholders to treat the unified emergency network project as a critical patriotic duty, ensuring that citizens in distress can access rapid, life-saving interventions swiftly.
