Dangote refinery achieves historic 650,000 bpd capacity as crude, MS units hit full optimization - ITREALMS

ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reached a definitive operational milestone, successfully restoring and optimizing its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and Motor Spirit (MS) production block, reports ITREALMS.

This achievement marks a global first, as the facility becomes the premier refinery in the world to reach its full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) within its initial operational phase.

The full integration of these units significantly bolsters the steady-state operations of what remains Africa’s largest and most advanced oil refining complex.

Following a period of scheduled maintenance, the refinery has initiated an intensive 72-hour series of performance test runs in partnership with its technology licensor, UOP.

These rigorous assessments are engineered to validate operational efficiency and ensure that all critical processing parameters align with the highest global engineering standards.

The successful stabilization of the CDU and MS Block, which includes the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerization unit, and reformer unit, sets a new benchmark for large-scale industrial engineering in the energy sector.

David Bird, the refinery's Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the precision and expertise demonstrated by the technical teams in stabilizing the units.

He noted that the performance testing phase allows for the validation of the entire plant under real-world operating conditions.

According to Bird, the refinery is now firmly positioned to provide consistent, world-class output, underscoring the engineering quality and reliability that define the facility's operations.

This milestone is a critical step in the refinery’s mission to transform the regional energy landscape, eliminate reliance on foreign imports, and establish Nigeria as a dominant net exporter of petroleum products.

The operational surge has immediate implications for domestic fuel supply. During the recent festive period, the refinery maintained a daily supply of 45–50 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

However, with the CDU and MS Block now operating at full capacity, the facility is equipped to deliver up to 75 million liters of PMS daily to the domestic market as demand dictates.
Looking ahead, the refinery is set to commence Phase 2 of its performance test runs for all remaining processing units starting next week.

This progress reaffirms the refinery's commitment to enhancing national energy security while driving industrial growth, job creation, and broader economic diversification.
