The media industry in Nigeria is mourning the loss of veteran journalist and broadcaster, Comrade Ozioma Onwuka-Okereke, the Head of Station at Zik FM 96.3 Radio in Umuahia. She passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, reports ITREALMS.This sad development was confirmed by Zik FM's Chairman/CEO, Isaac Okorafor, in a press statement available to ITREALMS on Thursday. He described her death as a significant loss for both the station and the wider media community.
He also praised Onwuka-Okereke as a "gem," underscoring her professionalism, mentorship, and leadership that helped shape the culture of excellence at the radio station.
"Comrade Onwuka-Okereke was known for her vibrant and disciplined approach, which ensured the station fulfilled its mandate of informing, educating, and entertaining the public with credibility.
"Her career spanned several decades, during which she held various positions within the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). She was a vocal advocate for the rights and welfare of journalists, particularly women in the media."
Zik FM stated that her sudden passing has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill. The station extended its condolences to her immediate family, including her young children, as well as her colleagues in the NUJ and NAWOJ.
