The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has directed with immediate effect the suspension of the former parish priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church Ewu-Owa Gberigbe, Ikorodu, Rev. Fr. James Anelu to embark on indefinite suspension for banning Igbo songs in the church, reports ITREALMS.

He also said that for this reason, Fr. Anelu has been asked to proceed on an indefinite leave of absence to give an opportunity for a thorough investigation of all the matters relating to his ministry in the parish.
"The leave of absence takes effect from Tuesday, 8th February, 2022 till further notice," he declared.
Archbishop Martins equally urged Catholic faithful to hold on to their faith and continue to worship God as one big family united in love and not separated by language, culture or race.
ITREALMS gathered that the suspended Fr. James Anelu had banned Igbo songs and choruses in the parish last Sunday, February 6, 2022.
The priest had stopped a soul lifting chorus in Igbo language angrily, during the second collection alleging the Igbos domination of activities in the parish as he was reportedly openly declaring that Igbos cannot keep dominating other people even in his parish.
Also, he was quoted as citing the case of his Benin Diocese where Igbos allegedly dominated to the point of becoming the Bishop in person of Akubueze.
Anelu was equally quoted as saying that “the spirit of God in any place recognises only languages indigenous to that geographical location.”
The congregation went into pandemonium over his statement which led to impromptu dismissal of the mass with many faithful grudgely staged a walk out of the mass and from the church premises.
