AfIGF shops for 5th host country



The African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF2016) Bureau has commenced shopping for the host of the 2016 edition of AfIGF, which is in its 5th year, reports ITRealms.

Officer in charge of the Bureau, and Chief, Knowledge Services Section at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Mr. Makane Faye said in the announcement for the bid to host the 5th African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF2016).

AfIGF, he said, is the continent’s contribution to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) process has led to the formation of the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) in September 2011 in Kenya.

He said that the fifth AfIGF will take place between tentatively mid-June and end of August 2016, for a duration of three to four days, including pre-conference events. 

“Exact dates will be determined jointly between the AfIGF secretariat and the host Government and notified to the stakeholders in due course,” he said.

Submission of proposals, Makana said, should be received by the AfIGF secretariat not later than 31st January 2016, stressing that any proposals sent after this date will not be considered.

Makana further said that the result of the selection of the host country will be announced by end of February 2016.

ITRealms gathered that the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a platform for multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on prevailing and emerging issues on Internet governance ecosystem. The IGF mandate was extended for ten years by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 2015. 

“IGF aims at fostering the sustainability, robustness, security, stability and the development of the Internet, thus facilitating content development and access to information and knowledge,” he said.

Previously, AfIGF sessions were successfully held in Egypt, from 2 - 4 October 2012; Kenya, from 24 - 26 September 2013; Nigeria, from 10-12 July 2014; and Ethiopia, from 6-8 September 2015.
