Methodist Church, Osun join forces on mechanized farming

The Methodist Church of Nigeria has expressed readiness to partner with the State Government of Osun in her efforts towards strengthening the economy of the state and Nigeria through Agriculture by going into mechanised farming, reports NaijaAgroNet.

Even as the Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has asserted that the only successful nation of the world are those who cultivate the land for agriculture and not those who dig into the land for Oil and other mineral resources.

Prelate Methodist Church Nigeria‎, His Eminence, Dr. Samuel Emeka Kanu Uche during a courtesy visit to the governor at the Governor's office in Osogbo noted that the church is strategising on how to improve the economy of the state through commercial farming that will provide jobs for the youth.

The clergy who pointed out that the state and the nation at large will overcome the present economic hardship like it overcame insurgency in the Northern part of Nigeria.

The Prelate comme‎nded the government of Aregbesola for looking inward on how to take the state forward at the face of the dwindling oil revenue in Nigeria, suggesting to government at all levels the need for proper taxation for the growth of the economy.

He encouraged the governor not to be deterred by critics, saying there is little or nothing that any government can do without the necessary funds.

"If you are kind enough to give us the land and an enabling environment, since it is a business venture, we will definitely pay tax, but as religious body, the church and the mosques, will not pay tax.  Without money, there is less that you can do, I know money will come, I sympathise with you and we are believing that oil prices will soon rise, we shall continue to pray for you and Nigeria,” he said.

Responding, Gov. Aregbesola applauded Methodist Church for wanting to strengthening the economy of the country and that of Osun through agriculture, insisting that nowadays, successful nation's are those tilling the soil for the purpose of planting and living on the produce of the land, adding that such country will never end up miserable or poor.

Every day, a data protection day - Oyedokun

The Chairman, Governing Council of the Institute of Information Management (IIM) Africa, Dr. Oyedokun Ayodeji Oyewole, has called on Nigerians to make every day, a data protection day, reports ITRealms.

He made this call at the commemoration of the 2016 World Data Privacy Day in Lagos, in a paper he delivered as guest speaker on ‘Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust’.

This is coming as the event organiser, Data and Information Privacy Protection Initiatives (DIPPI), launched a book titled: Data Privacy Hand Book, authored by Tokunbo Smith.

Oyedokun noted that essentially business leaders and other stakeholders should understand the full risk potential of data privacy threats and how to address these issues.

Oyedokun traced the origins of data protection day to an educational initiative originally focused on raising awareness among businesses as well as users about the importance of protecting the privacy fo their personal information online, particularly in the context of social networking.

According to him, the educational focus has since expanded over the past four years to include families, consumers and businesses.

In addition, he said, its educational initiative, data privacy day promotes events and activities that stimulate the development of technology tools that promote individual control over personally identifiable information, so as to encourage compliance with privacy laws and regulations and create dialogues among stakeholders.

ITRealms recalls that the World Data Privacy Day was initiated by the Council of Europe in 2007, while the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution to declare January 28 as National Data Privacy Day.

The 32-page booklet by Smith, ITRealms gathered, discussed the essence, value of privacy as well as the human dignity attached to the guiding of personal data and vital information.

The book endeavoured to do some working references to some legal background protecting the privacy of every individual in the use and sharing of information on the social media.

One of the discussants at the event held at the Public Service Staff Development Centre, Magodo, Lagos, Mr. Akintunde Esan, a lawyer in the Lagos State civil service who represented the state  Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Hon. Akeem Kazeems, said that one could sue anyone for breach of one’s right of privacy.

Esan also advised that people going into contractual agreements should always include the clause in respect of nondisclosure policy, especially in the employer and employee relationship.

Talking about Cyber Crime, he also warned that anyone who disclosed any piece of information in his custody about somebody else’s personal data risks without due permission, risks a jail term of at least 10 years.

Free software vector, a dangerous path - Experts

Experts have warned that one of the key ways to get infected easily is to use a free software, reports ITRealms.

According to a 20-page ‘Ransomware: Hostage Rescue Manual’ sighted by ITRealms, the free software vector, is yet another dangerous path.

For these set of experts at Ransomware, another common way to infect a user’s machine, be it mobile devices and computers, is to offer a free version of a piece of software.

They explained that this could come in many ways such as “cracked” versions of expensive games or software, free games, game “mods”, adult content, screensavers or bogus software advertised as a way to cheat in online games or get around a website’s paywall. By preying on the user in this way, the hackers could bypass any firewall or email filter.

“After all, the user downloaded the file directly themselves!” part of the manual exposed.

Also, ITRealms gathered that a recent ransomware attack exploited the popularity of the game Minecraft by offering a “mod” to players of Minecraft. When they installed it, the software also installed a sleeper version of ransomware that activated weeks later.

They pointed out that one method hackers will use to install malicious software on a machine is to exploit one of these unpatched vulnerabilities.

Examples of exploits, ITRealms gathered, could range from vulnerabilities in an un-patched version of Adobe Flash, a bug in Java or an old web browser all the way to an un-patched operating system.

2016 World Development Report harps on Internet as digital dividend

The World Bank Group and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in joint World Development Report 2016 harped on the digital dividends via the Internet for developing nations, reports ITRealms.

The report due for launch on Monday, February 1, 2016, ITRealms exclusively gathered is co-hosted by World Bank and UNCTAD in Geneva

ITRealms also gathered that the report examined how the Internet could be a force for development, especially for the poor in developing countries. 

The report, ITRealms further learnt documented many profound and transformational effects of digital technology, but find out that the broader benefits have fallen short and are unevenly distributed. 

To ensure that everyone benefits, the report argued that technology adoption will not be enough. 

Countries, for instance, the report said, will need to address the "analogue components", for example by strengthening regulations enabling firms to connect and compete, adapting worker's skills to the demands of the new economy, and ensuring that institutions are accountable.

ITRealms equally gathered that the report partly draws on research undertaken by UNCTAD in the area of the development implications of ICT.

Rotary club to partner with Rosyland Schools

The Rotary Club has expressed interest in partnering with the Rosyland Schools to improve on pupils activities in the school, reports ITRealms.

Speaking at the third Inter-House Sports Competition of Rosyland held at Dominican Playground, Mafoluku-Oshodi, Lagos, Mr. Alex Geo Nlebedum who was the chairman of the occasion gave this insight.

He assured the school of the Rotary partnership in the development of pupils around the vicinity and promised specifically that his division would work with Rosyland Schools to encourage the establishment of clubs in the school.

The modalities of these clubs, he said, would be worked out with the proprietress, Mrs Rose Alisiobi, so that by next edition of the Inter-House, there will be something to show for the partnership.

He later lighted the Inter-House light to herald the commencement of 2016 Inter-House Sports Competition of the school, after inspection of match-pass alongside Mr. Innocent Emeh and Mazi Udo Chijioke.

Earlier in her address, the proprietress of Rosyland schools, Mrs. Alisiobi appreciated God for the enablement for the school to organize another annual inter-house sports contest with the support of the school’s governing board led by Mr. Uche Alisiobi and UBA Plc, First Bank Plc and Bobo Food and Beverages Ltd, Nestle Nigeria, Promasidor Nigeria, Cocacola and Etisalat.

The St. Catherine of Siena, she said, provided the medical assistance desk.
