OLX identifies what Nigerians look out for in used vehicle

Online classifieds site, OLX has revealed what Nigerians look out for when buying used cars, as engine, price and transmission of the car top results, reports ITRealms.

OLX Country Manager, Lola Masha, told ITRealms that the research was carried out to identify what is most important to the users when buying used cars. 

“This information will enable us educate them on what to really look out for when in the market to buy a used vehicle” she said, stressing that the poll revealed that 26 per cent of the respondents believed that the engine was the most important thing to consider when buying a used car. 

Also, she said that this was followed very closely by 22.3 per cent who considered the price as a vital thing to consider and 1.7 per cent chose the transmission. 

“While, the remaining 38.4 per cent, chose the model, colour and year of the car,” she said.

Seasoned expert in automobiles and General Manager, Mandilas Enterprises Limited, Stephen Gladwin stated that “there is a wide range of factors to consider when buying a used vehicle. More often than not, there is more to consider than what meets the naked eye. These factors range from the condition of engine, gearbox, transmission system, tyres, year of manufacture, the make of the vehicle, battery condition, and even the upholstery. These are instrumental factors that make up the overall perception of the vehicle.”

He also disclosed that, “There are however little things that could make or mar the feel of the car and they must be considered in the utmost regard. Some of these comprise of the AC system, Radio/CD, steering system, body condition, windscreen, rust, effectiveness of clutch system, brakes, windows, body colour, suspension system, Odometer reading, condition of airbag, ABS, wheel and exhaust.”

Gladwin further intimated that none of the aforementioned should be taken in levity. 

“It is important to seek proper assessment from a trained technician/mechanic who will carry out a physical test of the vehicle to ascertain these conditions, a road test to posit the girth and balance of the vehicle, as well as a diagnosis test to confirm the overall valuation of the vehicle,” he said.

Nigerians who are in the market to sell their used vehicles can post their cars on OLX for free and qualified ads will get an evaluation certificate from Mandilas that will state the current market value of the car as well as the condition of each part of the car.  This will benefit both the buyer who is worried about the worth and condition of the car they want to buy and the seller who is not sure of the monetary value of the car.

Guild of Editors mourns late Hajiya Bilkisu

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), has expressed deep sense of loss and sadness over the death of a Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, (FNGE), who died during a stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, September 24, 2015, reports ITRealms.

NGE General Secretary, Victoria Ibanga in a press statement made available to ITRealms, described Hajiya Bilkisu as trailblazer, quintessential, and indefatigable Nigerian Journalist who was invaluable and respected fellow of our prestigious association.

“We are greatly saddened by her untimely passing and sincerely convey deep sympathies in this difficult time to members of her family who painfully bear the brunt of her sudden exit,” she said.

According to NGE, Hajiya Bilkisu broke the glass ceiling to edit two national newspapers and a magazine namely, The Triumph in Kano, The New Nigerian, and Citizen (both in Kaduna). 

“Besides being the first female Editor from Northern Nigeria, she scored many other firsts in the course of her sojourn here on earth. She was the founding member of Women in Nigeria (WIN), the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association (FOMWAN), a columnist for Daily Trust and Leadership newspapers, and the Executive Director of Advocacy Nigeria, a movement for the reduction of maternal and child mortality,” NGE noted.

Further, the Guild said that in a journalism carrier, which spanned over three decades, Hajiya Bilkisu, carved a niche for herself, contributing immensely to the growth of the Guild and development of the media industry in Nigeria, Africa and the whole world.

“This feat had made her a great citizen of the world,” NGE said.

Bilkisu, the NGE said, through her work touched many lives, united families, states and the nation in general and was fondly called was also a brilliant voice for the voiceless Nigerian Girl Child.

“We also convey our heartfelt sympathies to the families of other victims of the tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families,” NGE prayed, stressing the need for the organizers of the pilgrimage to take precautionary measures to avoid future occurrences.

Nigeria reaffirms commitment to climate change agreements

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the international community thatas a party to the Climate Change Convention and its Protocol, Nigeria remains committed to the adoption of a legally binding universal agreement to mitigate climate change, NaijaAgroNet reports.

He commended the countries that have announced their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) ahead of the October 2015 deadline. These contributions, he stated, will go a long way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. The INDCs will serve as a yardstick for measuring the commitment of parties to the Framework convention.

NaijaAgroNet learnt, Buhari was  speaking at the summit meeting on climate change  in New York,September 27, 2015, adding that “the  summit provides a unique opportunity for us to work together to address climate change and its impacts which is an undeniable issue of concern to the international community. The increase in global warming is an indication that we face a crisis of global proportions,” he said.

“In Nigeria, we have seen extreme weather variations, rising sea levels, encroaching desertification, excessive rainfall, erosion and floods, land degradation - all of which threaten the ecosystem. These developments have devastating human costs and are affecting food security, livelihoods and the very survival of our people.

“To address these negative effects, we have developed a National Policy to guide Nigeria’s response to Climate Change. Our response is broadly based on the twin strategy of Mitigation and Adaptation.
“In addition we must prioritize the means of implementing the INDCs, in terms of finance, technology and capacity building, especially in supporting developing countries, including those in Africa. This is fundamental to ensuring that collective action to combat climate change is indeed, collaborative and effective in the long run”.

“As we approach Paris, the Nigerian position which reflects the African consensus, is that a legally binding universal instrument will be beneficial to all State Parties. Nigeria will continue to champion the core principles and goals of the new Sustainable Development Agenda and hopes that the next Conference of Parties will eventually become a global milestone to combat and cushion the dire impacts of climate change,” Buhari said.

Buhari orders NAHCON, Nigerian embassy to account for pilgrims in Saudi Arabia

President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday, ordered the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) and the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to urgently account for all Nigerian pilgrims in the aftermath of last Thursday's disaster at Mina.

A press statement from the Presidency made available to ITRealms, the Presidential directive follows conflicting reports on the number Nigerians who died or suffered injuries in the catastrophe which claimed well over 700 lives.

President Buhari is very concerned that days after the unfortunate incident, some Nigerian families are still grappling with painful uncertainty over the fate of their relatives who traveled to Saudi Arabia for this year's Hajj.

The President expects the National Hajj Commission to work with the various state pilgrim boards, Islamic organisations and private travel agencies involved in Hajj operations to speedily provide a confirmed and verifiable report on the status of every Nigerian pilgrim in Saudi Arabia.

President Buhari has also directed the Hajj Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to give all necessary assistance to Nigerians who are still receiving treatment for injuries suffered in Mina.

He continues to pray that Almighty Allah will receive the souls of the dead, comfort bereaved families, heal the injured and bring all surviving Nigerian pilgrims safely home.

New server deals to spur growth in MEA - IDC

New server deals in Middle East and Africa  are expected to spur growth in key countries like Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, ITRealms reports.

These deals will primarily be within the healthcare, government, financial services, and telecommunications sectors, according to IDC report.

The recent declines in the market's revenue has been attributed to the fact that vendors like Huawei and Lenovo are offering servers that are almost 40 per cent cheaper than the prices offered by the market's A-ranking vendors, namely HP and Dell.

Looking at the second half of 2015, IDC expects the MEA server market to experience a 4 per cent increase in volume and a 6 per cent decline in value year-on-year.

This is coming on the heels of declining server market in the Middle East and Africa (MEA)  which ITRealms gathered comprised x86 and non-x86 servers which contracted 10 per cent year on year in Q2 2015 to total 65,000 units, according to the latest figures from International Data Corporation (IDC), the premier global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets.

This decline can primarily be attributed to the poor political and socioeconomic conditions that have hampered a number of countries in the region; particularly notable in the x86 server market where a number of significant projects within the government sector were delayed. In revenue terms, the market remained flat as there was a slight increase in the number of higher-end servers sold during the quarter, ITRealms learnt.

Research analyst for systems and infrastructure solutions at IDC Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, Victoria Mendes, said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirate (UAE) experienced very slow quarters, both in terms of x86 server units and revenue, primarily due to delayed budget rollouts, the traditional slowdown over Ramadan, and continuing uncertainty around falling oil prices.

“Combined, these two countries suffered declines of 28 per cent in volume and 21 per cent in value year on year in Q2 2015. But despite the slowdown, the UAE did see a few deals take place in the government and financial sectors, while Saudi Arabia saw a big deal in the oil and gas industry,” she said.

Revenue in Turkey, ITRealms learnt, was up by around 20 per cent year on year despite the market suffering a 10 per cent decline in shipments. This anomaly can be attributed to the fact that several large-scale deals took place during the quarter. The market is also seeing improved uptake of virtualization technologies, which consume lesser server units than is the case in traditional datacenters.

Dodan Warriors Basketball Club player commends Sprite

A player of the Dodan Warriors Basketball Club, Otse John, has commended Sprite Triple Slam (STS) for assisting the youths in fulfilling their life dreams, ITRealms reports.

Recounting how he was discovered through STS a few years ago, he said, “I was in 100 level in the University then. After the regional competitions, where I emerged as the winner, I progressed to the finals which held in Lagos. It was while playing in Lagos that I was approached to play in the Nigerian league, and since then, my life has never been the same."

John, ITRealms learnt, was speaking to news men at the 2015 edition of the STS experiential activations which held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the University ofBenin (UNIBEN), where the students gathered to enjoy the unique and exciting fusion of Basketball, Music and Dance skills, the three pillars of the STS activation.

The activation, which kicked off at 2 p.m., reached its climax with a musical performance by Vector da Viper, who got the audience on their feet as he stepped on the stage. Calling for the crowd to join him on stage, the “King Kong” crooner practically had the students screaming and dancing all through his performance.

Jeffrey Akoh wins 2015 MTN Project Fame star prize

An Eighteen-year old Jeffrey Akoh at the weekend emerged the 2015 MTN Project Fame star prize winner, reports ITRealms.

A Sound Engineering graduate from the SAE Institute of Cape Town, South Africa, Jeffrey, ITRealms reports had unfailingly tends to wow judges and audience by reaching out to them with each performance.

ITRealms also reports that SAE based in Cape Town is a brand name in the film and music industries throughout the African continent for its high quality of education.

With his emergence, Jeffrey joins the likes of Iyanya, iMike, Ayoola, Chidinma, Monica, Olawale and Geoffrey as a Project Fame superstar, moreso as the 8^th star winner.

Third runner up in the competition was Ada, with second runner up being Anderson and Pearl being the first runner up.

Vanguard reports that Jeffrey’s musical influencers include Chris Brown, Lawrence Flowers, and Kim Burrell.

By winning this prize, he received the grand prize of N5 million, a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a recording contract.

Other winners in this series include Pearl Olanma Awa-Agwu who got the second place and went home with a car and N3 million. 

Further, Anderson Emmanuel Amos came third, therefore went home with a car and N1 million; whereas the 4th place position went to Adanoritsewo ‘Ada’ Gold Tosanwumi and who received a prize of N1 million only.
