BigBlueButton releases 0.71 beta, enhances VoIP
Group of software developers under the auspices of BigBlueButton have released the 0.71 beta version of this open source web conferencing for distance education.
According to the group, they are getting close to finishing the development of BigBlueButton 0.71, which is refer hereafter as 0.71-beta, an indication that it’s not fully released yet.
While soliciting the support of users for feedback, the BigBlueButton developers said their goal at the moment is to check out the obvious and not so obvious bugs in BigBlueButton 0.71-beta so as to enable them launch the broader testing.
“We can soon move to broader testing. Our plan for testing 0.71-beta will proceed in stages,” they said.
These, they also said, would include installation of 0.71-beta on devtest.bigbluebutton.org for limited testing; installation of 0.71-beta on demo.bigbluebutton.org for broader testing before its release on Virtual Machine (VM) for download and testing.
A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a machine that is a computer that executes instructions like a physical machine.
Additionally, the BigBlueButton developers group indicated that they would release the 0.71-beta Ubuntu packages for local installation and testing.
They also urged that users, who found any bug, should use the issue tracker to submit a short description along with the steps to reproduce it.
“We recognize that some bugs are not deterministic, but if you can provide steps, it greatly assists us in quickly fixing the bugs. We’ll watch the issue list closely and use it, along with the feedback in bigbluebutton-dev gauge our progress through the above stages,” they said.
On what is new, the developers noted that the list is not complete, but pointed out that it practically reduces audio lag with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
“This was the bulk of our effort for 0.71. We improved the algorithms to handle audio packets coming to and from the BigBlueButton server. You should experience less audio lag using VoIP when compared to 0.70,” part of the announcement stated.
BigBlueButton 0.71, they said, now supports FreeSWITCH as a voice conference server. This enables the BigBlueButton client to transmit either wide-band on 16 Kilo Hertz (KHz) speex or nellymoser voice codec.
“In our testing so far, we found that nellymoser scales better and will remain the default voice codec in BigBlueButton,” he said.

Over 6,000 Nigerian youths participated in the just concluded Nigerian Idol 2010 being sponsored by Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) operator, Etisalat Nigeria.
Disclosing this exclusively in a chat with ITRealms Online last weekend at the Lagos audition centre at Ogba-Ikeja, Lagos, the chief commercial officer (CCO), Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Wael Ammar said that they were not disappointed with the number of participants, which is an indication of the kind of enormous talents disposal to Nigerians.
“We have about 6,000 so far that registered for the audition nationwide,” he told ITRealms Online.
Mr. Ammar who recalled that in September, Etisalat had launched the Nigerian Idol during a press conference in Lagos and its intension to sponsor this year’s Nigerian Idol.
“We have started since the last month with the auditioning in Calabar, Enugu and Abuja and now in Lagos. We introduced the Nigerian Idol to help in discovering the talents hidden in Nigerians, especially the youths,” he said.
Stressing that the number of youths who lined up till the end of the street for this auditioning in Lagos, is an indication of its success, are the run-up activities to the main selection of who would be the Nigerian Idol.
“This has been the experience since this started in Lagos last Friday,” he declared.
I think it is a great turnout and great success for Etisalat’s Nigerian Idol
Affirming that the youthful crowd is the level of acceptance of Etisalat as brand in the country and particularly the youths, Mr. Ammar noted that Nigerian youth are already motivated.
“I think what I have seen in this country is that Nigerians are already motivated but they just need a platform to prove themselves and now doing that is what we are doing through Etisalat’s sponsored Nigerian Idol,” he said.
This, he said, offers an opportunity to Nigerian youths to prove themselves and for the world to discover their talents.
“Basically as we say in Etisalat, we give you the voice to your dreams through the Etisalat’s sponsorship of the Nigerian Idol,” he enthused.
Further, he explained that the main countdown, would start once they are done with the auditioning which ended last weekend in Lagos.
“Once we are done with the auditioning, that would be when it could be aired or broadcasted to the entire world basically in November,” he said.
Ammar equally enjoined subscribers on the network to remain steadfast so as to be actively involved in choosing who emerges as the Nigerian Idol eventually by ensuring that they vote and watch the performances on selected broadcast stations nationwide.
“… Follow up as the countdown begins and vote for their favourite candidates to emerge as the Nigerian Idol,” he advised.
ITRealms Online recalls that Etisalat Nigeria, had on September 21, this year proclaimed its sponsorship of Nigerian Idol at a star-studded event in Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja, Lagos. The reality show, tagged ‘Giving Voice to Your Dreams,’ which promises to change the face of Nigerian entertainment industry.
Ammar had noted then that “From the onset we have assured our consumers that we intend not only to be their preferred telecoms operator but also their partner for life. Our desire is to enable them achieve their dreams and aspirations. The sponsorship of Nigerian Idol is one of the many ways we choose to empower the youth of our nation.”
He emphasized that through this, young Nigerians could give a voice to their dreams, adding that it not just the contestants but also the host of talented men and women who are directors, content developers, producers, make-up artists, voice coach, dance instructor to name a few; who will develop and execute this concept from start to finish and also utilize this platform to express their talent and in turn realize their dreams.
“There is no doubt that the future of this nation lies in the hands of our youths. We urge them to take this unique opportunity and make their dreams come true,” he said.
Equally speaking, Project Manager, Nigerian Idol, Ms. Chichi Nwoko expressed happiness over the partnership.
“I’m deeply impressed with the vision that has brought this partnership and Nigerian Idol to this country. It’s obvious that Idol is not a flash-in-the-pan concept. Currently it is in 45 countries and counting. It is a concept that over the years has become deeply embedded in our socio-cultural fabric. We have no doubt that this concept will be warmly embraced by all Nigerians, and become a much anticipated annual event,” Nwoko asserted.

Umuahia, Sapele, 4 others join Starzone
Acclaimed fourth largest mobile operator in the country and operator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Starcomms plc, has disclosed that more cities has been covered by the network just as it unveils StarZone package to lower call tariffs in Umuahia, Sapele, Abeokuta, Maiduguri, Bauchi and Jos.
The package, the Chief Commercial Officer, Starcomms, Mr. Tushar Maheshwari said was first introduced in Benin-City, Owerri, Uyo, Warri, Katsina, Enugu, Ogbomosho, Nnewi and Awka, a few weeks ago and has recorded an overwhelming participation by customers in these cities.
He explained that customers in Star-Zone cities have the opportunity of making on-net calls for N4 per minute during peak and off-peak period.
“So travelers into any of these cities from anywhere in Nigeria will also enjoy lower tariff on on-net Starcomms calls for as long as they are there,” he said.
Mr. Maheshwari also said that the success recorded in the response of the people in the first set of cities on the StarZone package inspired the Starcomms to extend the gesture to other cities. According to him, once a customer leaves any of the StarZone cities for a place like Lagos, he would no longer enjoy the benefits of the Star-Zone option.
“The Star-zone rate is applicable only to prepaid customers,” he said, stressing that on a regular basis Starcomms strives to ensure that the best telephone services that Nigerians get come from network.
“That is why we seek every way to add value to the experience they get from us always. StarZone is another way of caring for Starcomms customers in a special way. As a Nigerian company, we are determined to continue giving our customers top-of-the-range services that would not hurt their pocket,” he assured.
The company which recently expanded network by deploying more cell site in diverse locations across the country, he said, was to boost the quality of service that customers enjoy on Starcomms network.
Cell sites, he said, are used for the transmission of radio waves, to which calls are converted, from one cell phone or data device to another phone or data device on the same network or on other networks.
“Where there are enough cell sites to cover a wide area, the range of each is set to ensure that there is enough overlap for ‘handover’ to and from others. The size of a site depends on the area of coverage that’s needed and the number of calls that are made in that area. Increasing the number of sites implies that Starcomms has the capacity to accept and transmit more number of calls as well as cover a wider geographical range, giving out clearer signals,” he elucidated.
Beyond making it easy for customers to talk, Starcomms, he said, is committed towards providing quality, cutting-edge and affordable telecommunications services.
“The services that we make available to our customers are generally tailored towards making their lives easier and better. It is a commitment that we hold very dear in our relationship with them,” he said.

Ericsson Response marks 10yr of humanitarian aid
Ericsson Response, last week marked its 10 years of responding emergencies and supporting over 50 complex disasters with over 140 volunteers in 30 countries including Nigeria.
Ericsson Response, a global initiative that provides the communication equipment and expertise needed to respond effectively to human suffering caused by natural disasters. The initiative formalizes Ericsson’s commitment to the issue based on its previous involvement and experience in various disaster response efforts throughout the world.
Also, Ericsson Response works in close cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nation’s (UN) different humanitarian organizations.
A press statement made available to ITRealms Online by the Communications Manager for West Africa at Ericsson, Ms Omasan Ogisi, informed that 10th anniversary of Ericsson Response formed in 2000, was born of a conviction among top managers at Ericsson of the need to invest in a non-profit, global initiative.
Since 2000, she said, Ericsson Response has participated in more than 50 natural disasters and complex emergencies in Turkey (1999), Salvador (2001), India (2001), Afghanistan (2002), Iran (2003), Thailand (2004), Pakistan (2005), Lebanon (2006), Central African Republic (2008) Democratic Republic of Congo (2009) and Sudan (2009), to name a few.
She noted that the over 140 volunteers in 30 countries working for Ericsson Response are trained to help set up and maintain communications in disaster zones.
The volunteers’ network, she said, has spread out across 30 countries.
The Director, Learning & Competence Develop for region sub-Saharan Africa, and a volunteer, Tade Oyinlola, was quoted as saying that Ericsson Response has been a humbling and life changing experience to most of the volunteers.
Oyinlola said they are properly trained and equipped with the skills and contacts required for successful field support.
Also, Oyinlola recalled being part of the relief effort to support the victims of the 2005 earthquake in the city of Muzzaffarabad, Pakistan.
Notably, Ericsson Response’s operation after the earthquake in Haiti earlier this year was the biggest in the 10-year history of the organization; even as the aid network facilitated more than 3000 calls daily.
On a visit to Haiti, recently, the former United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Sir John Holmes, pointed out that nothing is more important than good, rapid communications at the beginning of a disaster.
“The GSM network built up for humanitarian efforts in Haiti enabled aid workers to work more efficiently and to provide desperately needed support for suffering people,” he said.
The Ericsson Response program is a not-for-profit activity that supports humanitarian operations with no commercial objective and is a key component of Ericsson’s corporate responsibility activities.

BlackBerry-maker RIM, has given indications that it’s strategizing on a wide-ranging alliance with regulators and mobile operators in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) to promote its services to government, enterprises and academic institutions in the region.

He underscored the tact that history has it that before President Obasanjo assumed office on May 29, 1999, Nigeria had a little over 450,000 telephone lines with most of which either not functioning or in government offices.
“Before he came into office, Nigeria’s communications regulatory agency was in need of direction. President Obasanjo’s foresight in picking the right people for the assignment at the crucial time coupled with his non-interference with their job led to what we have today as the Nigerian telecom revolution, which has no doubt fuelled the telecom growth in Africa,” he asserted.
Abang pointed out that the letter of nomination to this effect has been acknowledged by former President Obasanjo through his Special Assistant on Administration, Chief Abraham Taiwo Ojo, via a letter to the organizers.
Excerpts from the letter read “I have been directed by His Excellency former President Olusegun Obasanjo to acknowledge, with thanks, the receipt of your letter of October 1, 2010 by which you confirmed the decision of IT & Telecom Digest to confer on him a ‘Life Time Achievement Award.’”
Ojo further said that Obasanjo was elated for the gesture, which he has accepted with pleasure.
“He, at this juncture, extends his gratitude to you and the entire management of IT & Telecom Digest for the honour,” he said, stressing that Obasanjo with the acceptance of the award, urged the organizers to continue in their efforts by maintaining and improving upon the standard of excellence, which has won the magazine its cherished esteem.
“Do keep the magazine’s flag flying,” Ojo noted in the letter.
Additionally, the organisers, said, Obasanjo deserve to be recognized as the hero of the African telecom revolution, mainly on the fact that the time when he assumed office as president, South Africa was the African country with the highest number of telephone lines in the continent, while Nigeria was literally missing in the map of telecom. Today, the organisers equally said, Nigeria is not just the destination for telecom investment in Africa but has assumed the position of a country with the highest telephone numbers in the continent.
Abang recalled that former President Obasanjo would be honoured with the most prestigious lifetime achievement award of the African Telecom Hall of Fame Awards, previously called the Nigerian Information Technology and Telecom Awards (NITTA) since inception in 2002.
He named some of the speakers expected at the event to include the immediate past Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, and his successor, Dr. Eugene Juwah, the Managing Director, Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSAT), Mr. Ahmed T. Rufai to name a few.

He said that the product, touted to be its latest in stock, would provide customers relevant collaborative modules to meet their business needs.
The Customer Collaboration, he highlighted, would comprise contact centers, marketing dynamics, speech self-service, multi-channel entreprise, video enabled care customer to name a few.
He said that the contact center would facilitate how customers could collaborate with one another, which has been a long dream of Cisco chairman, Mr. John Chambers.
According to him, Chambers is interested in capitalizing on market transitions using Cisco strategies based on catching market transitions that could affect customers, especially with the proliferation of video and collaborative web 2.0 technologies.
He noted that with this, networks have continued to evolve from the plumbing of the internet to the platform that could change the future.
Hernanadez also said that with market dynamics would engender the creation of customer care transitions through changing of expectations in relationship management, social software explosion based on consumer and enterprise.
In addition, he said that it would facilitate transfer of wealth to millennial, while advertising and brand management change would not be left out of the customer collaborative revolution experience.
Transitions in customer engagement, he said, would expound on companies seeing and entering an operational metrics zone, capable of translating into customer intimacy, and changing reactive relationships to proactive, agents to experts, solicitation to participation as well as cost centers transforming into growing engine.
He pointed out that why Cisco recently bought Tanberg was to further leverage on its unique proposition of reducing the level of bandwidth certain uploads could consume, which very advantageous to developing countries.
Hernanadez accentuated that video-enable customer care is most favourable for corporate, mostly when seeking for financial advice.
“Social media customer care merit of social media is being proactive about a customer. It would be available this week at all Cisco offices globally,” he said.
Further, he said that the offer is coming with data sheet, noting that social media customer care has maturity model traits, which include listening or ignoring, offering occasional reporting and reactive surprise among others.
Contact centre, he said, continues to be the foundation of customer care, whereas the social networks are accelerating communications, social-enabled customer care is here, mostly by ad hoc, but is expected to mature overtime, while customer collaboration would have an increasingly larger impacts on corporate profitability and brand value.
Cisco said it pride customers as the first and an integral part of its DNA in creating long-lasting customer partnerships and working with them to identify their needs and provide solutions that support their success.
The concept of solutions being driven to address specific customer challenges, Cisco also said, has been with firm since inception when husband and wife, Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, both working for Stanford University, wanted to email each other from their respective offices located in different buildings but were unable to do so, due to technological shortcomings.
A technology had to be invented to deal with disparate local area protocols; and as a result of solving their challenge - the multi-protocol router was born and ever since Cisco has shaped the future of the Internet by creating unprecedented value and opportunity for our customers, employees, investors and ecosystem partners and has become the worldwide leader in networking - transforming how people connect, communicate and collaborate.

Samsung rides on RFMD for GalaxyTab
Greensboro-based Radio Frequency Micro Devices (RFMD), Incorporated has announced that Samsung Electronics has picked its highly integrated Wireless Fidelity (WiFI) component for its Android tablet, known as GalaxyTab.
Confirming this development, president of RFMD’s Multi-Market Products Group (MPG), Mr. Bob Van Buskirk, said that specifically, RFMD is supplying Samsung with the RF5521 front end module (FEM) for the low-band 2.4 GHz frequency, and the RF5515 low noise amplifier (LNA) and RF5355 power amplifier (PA) for the high-band 5.0 GHz frequency.
He said that volume shipments have begun, and RFMD anticipated increase in its WiFi shipments to Samsung; in mobile tablet devices as well as in smartphones as single-band and dual-band design wins ramp into volume production.
“With 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth® 3.0, the Samsung GALAXY Tab takes mobile communication to a whole new level,” he said, stressing that by combining Samsung innovation with the Android OS 2.2, the Tab is truly an always on communication and entertainment tool.
“Its large battery (4,000 mAh) provides more than 7 hours of movie viewing time and because it’s powered by a Cortex A8 1.0GHz application processor, it’s designed to deliver high performance,” he declared.
He explained that the RF5521 FEM, RF5515 LNA and RF5355 PA are on a leading WiFi reference design and was selected primarily due their combination of performance, integration and small footprint size.
While the RF5521 FEM combines a low noise amplifier (LNA) with bypass and a single pole three throw (SP3T) switch, he noted that the RF5515 and RF5355 operate in tandem to provide a 5GHz RF front end solution that exceeds competitive performance and price levels while it delivers extended range capability.
“Each of the components is targeted at high-performance mobile applications using WiFi and Bluetooth combination systems,” he said.
He expressed delight to support the Samsung Galaxy Tab and looks forward to growing the WiFi business with Samsung across both smartphones and mobile tablet devices.
“As we drive to extend our product leadership in a wide range of RF components, our customers can rely on RFMD’s ability to deliver highly integrated solutions that provide superior performance in a reduced-size footprint, significantly enhancing the end user’s wireless connectivity experience,” he said.
He emphasized that the mobile embedded WiFi market is growing at a rapid pace, and dual-band WiFi (2.5GHz/5GHz) is in the early stages of adoption in the expanding market for mobile internet devices (MIDs).
