2016: Kaspersky says 8.5m malicious installation on mobiles

Latest Kaspersky Lab mobile security report has disclosed that 2016 saw a near-threefold rise in mobile malware detections compared to 2015 to the tune of 8.5 million malicious installations identified led by mobile Trojans, reports ITRealms.

Kaspersky in its annual Mobile Virusology report made available to ITRealms, noted that in the space of just one year, a volume equivalent to 50 per cent of all the malware detected in the previous 11 years (15.77 million in 2004 – 2015) was released.

According to Kaspersky officials, leading the way were mobile advertising Trojans which now make up 16 of the top 20 malicious programmes, up from 12 in 2015, highlighting the evolution of mobile banking Trojans.

The report pointed out that specialist officers from INTERPOL’s Global Complex for Innovation have contributed an analysis of mobile malware on the Dark Web to the report.
In 2016, ITRealms reports that Kaspersky Lab mobile security products reported that nearly 40 million attacks attempts by mobile malware, with over 4 million users of Android-based devices protected (vs 2.6 million in 2015).

In addition, Kaspersky report showed that over 260,000 detections of installation packages for mobile ransomware Trojans (an increase of almost 8.5 times, year-on-year).


“More than 153,000 unique users targeted by mobile ransomware (an increase of 1.6 times compared with 2015); Over 128,000 mobile banking Trojans detected (nearly 1.6 times more than in 2015),” part of the report read.

MyPAD tablet a success, here is myPAD2 - Starcomms


“The device has a wide screen of 10.1 inches and it is powered by a 2.3 Android operating system that gives the best of processing speed. It offers the user excellent visibility while using the tablet,” he said.


One of the leading operators of the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) in Nigeria, Starcomms plc, has said its myPad tablet version 1 was a success.

This success, Starcomms said has hastened the launch of its myPAD-2 tablet into the Nigerian telecommunication market.

Chief executive officer, Starcomms, Mr. Logan Pather, said that the device is an upgrade of the first myPAD launched in 2010 by the company, which won for itself the IT product of the year award at the Beacon of ICT award in 2011.

Pather who made this known in Lagos described myPAD2 as a high-end tablet and a data device, innovatively crafted to support multiple functionalities that help the users maintain their high standard of living.


As said by him, myPAD-2 comes with an exquisite and attractive appearance that radiates the grandeur that the Starcomms brand is known for in the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.

He stressed that myPAD2 tablet would be bundled with a router and data offer, so as to generate customer interest and drive data sale.

Pather further said that the tablet would also be sold as a standalone device to customers who already possess Starcomms routers and want to avail themselves of the innovative device.

On the available bundle offers, Pather said the myPAD2 + Router + 6GB data offer would is offered at N69, 9999 while myPAD2 tablet only will be on offer for NGN47, 999.

The plan, he said, is available in all Starcomms coverage cities and sales will be made through all Starcomms sales channels.
 
“Renewals on the router will be based on existing renewal offers,” he said.
