African Ministers for Kigali roundtable - ITREALMS

African Ministers of Education and Information Technology will be heading for Kigali next week, reports ITREALMS.

The Rwandan capital will host the annual Ministerial Round Table (MRT) meeting at eLearning Africa, the continent’s largest conference on technology assisted learning and training.

The theme of the MRT will be ‘Towards a Knowledge-based Economy’ and the ministers are expected to discuss the possible effects of a global ‘fourth industrial revolution’ on Africa. With machines increasingly likely to replace human workers in a number of key industries, the implications for African governments, businesses and citizens are potentially enormous.

However, a ‘fourth industrial revolution’ may offer African economies an opportunity to ‘leapfrog’ their competitors and the ministers will consider what African Governments and businesses need to do to make the most of a new era of rapid technological change.

Rebecca Stromeyer, the founder and organiser of eLearning Africa said “Many African economies are actually in quite a strong position. Unlike the so-called ‘advanced economies,’ they don’t have to waste huge resources trying to restructure tired, old industries. Many of them can start from scratch and they have a great deal to offer potential investors. They are resource rich and they have the world’s most youthful population, which is bound to attract investors and entrepreneurs.

“The key thing now is to focus on giving young people the modern skills they need and creating a climate which encourages innovation and creativity. If African Governments do that, Africa can lead the world.”

At the eLearning Africa Ministerial Round Table, Ministers will focus on discussing practical measures, which can be implemented quickly to give Africans a chance to take advantage of what is likely to be a new era of opportunity.

SGF leads guest to ASURI's 2-day roundtable on research funding

Plans have been advanced for a two-day roundtable on research funding for research institutions in Nigeria slated for Abuja, between April 17 and 18, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha as special guest, reports ITRealms.

The event to be hosted by the Academic Staff Union of ResearchInstitutions (ASURI), ITRealms gathered, represents the interest of researchers in Federal mandated Research Institutes, Agencies and Allied Colleges in Nigeria, in collaboration with Co-Heritage Hunters Nigeria and TF & Associates as organisers, is a talk shop aimed at mobilising the nation in support of adequate research funding.

A press statement jointly signed by the secretary general of ASURI, Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku, the president of Co-Heritage Hunters Nigeria, Pastor Bola Oregbemi, and the managing consultant of TF & and Associates, Mr. Toye Fawole, the event, coming on the heels of the recently-passed National Research and Innovation Council Bill 2018, will take place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, as an appreciation event to celebrate innovativeness andà beam positive light on the role of research in national development.

 With the theme, “Research our Hope,” the two-day event will feature the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, as special guest of honour while the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Muhammadu Musa Bello, and the minority whip in the Senate, Senator Philip Aduda, representing FCT in the Senate, are chief host and co-host respectively.

The main speaker at the talk shop is eminent scientist and former vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe, also a former president of the National Academy of Science (NAS) while the chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Senator (Prof.) Robert Ajayi Boroffice, and Senator David Umaru, the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters who sponsored the National Research and Innovation Council Bill 2018, will lead the team of the 60 Senators who co-sponsored the Bill and several other federal lawmakers from both chambers to the event. 

In attendance as well will be the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonaya Onu; Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbe; and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator (Dr.) Chris Nwabueze Ngige, and many other Ministers who superintend over federal mandate research institutes and agencies.  

The event is also expected to feature members of the Diplomatic Corps, Executive Directors and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Research Institutes, Director-Generals (DGs) of Federal Agencies, Captains of industry, opinion leaders and the civil society, among others.

The two-day roundtable will feature over 1,000 researchers while over 100 Nigerian research institutes will showcase their activities at the adjoining exhibition, alongside other exhibitors from both private and public sectors.

Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum sets date for IG4D, IPv6 roundtable 2018

The 2018 edition of the Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) and Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable have gotten dates in June for the two-day annual stakeholder engagement, reports ITRealms.

The organisers of Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) and Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable, DigitalSENSE Africa Media made this disclosure on Monday in Lagos.

According to the convener and Executive Director, Operations at DigitalSENSE Africa Media, Mrs Nkemdilim Nweke, the dates for the 2018 NDSF series on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) and Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable have been fixed for Wednesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 7, at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Cappa, Lagos.

The main themes for the two-day forum, she said, are for Day 1 IG4D; ‘Internet Governance: Sustaining Development' on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, while Day 2 is the Nigeria IPV6 Roundtable on ‘IPv6: Broadening the Horizon’ on Thursday, June 7, 2018.

She also said that date announcement before end of every January, has become customary to enable Internet stakeholders to mark their calendars and get ready for another year of multi-stakeholder assembly under the umbrella of Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum series.

This, she equally said will afford stakeholders like the mobile network operators, mobile phone companies, among others to streamline their activities by taking advantage of this two-day events which exhibits the true stakeholders engagement on Internet Governance for Development and IPv6 Roundtable in Nigeria.

Mrs Nweke pointed out that Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum series which is on its 10^th year has remained a distinguished annual rallying point for Internet stakeholders in the country.

NDSF series, she said, is organised and hosted by DigitalSENSE Africa (DSA) Media, an At-Large Structure certified by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and National InformationTechnology Development Agency (NITDA), Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), Nigeria Internet Group, Internet Society, Nigeria chapter and IPv6 Council Nigeria, as well as the Africa Civil Society on the Information Society (ACSIS), among others.

DigitalSENSE Africa Media, she noted, is an At-Large Structure (ALS) certified by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and organizes this annual forum in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Galaxy Backbone and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), Nigeria Internet Group, Internet Society, Nigeria chapter and IPv6 Council Nigeria, to name but a few.

Further, she said, DigitalSENSE Africa is a team of internationally reputed and award-winning Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry analysts and perception managers; professionally affiliated to African Regional At-Large Organisation (AFRALO) for shaping the future of the Internet, African Civil Society for the Information Society (ACSIS).

PwC 8th power and utilities roundtable underway

The professional services firm, PwC Nigeria, has said that plans to host the 8th edition of its annual Power and Utilities Roundtable, have been reached advanced stage, reports iTRealms.

Head Marketing & Communications  at PwC Nigeria, Ms Delia Asuzu, disclosed this to iTRealms, saying that the event which is part of the firm’s contribution to the on-going reforms in the Nigerian power sector is slated to hold on Thursday 30 November 2017 at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel, Lagos.

The theme of this year’s roundtable, according Asuzu in a press statement made available to iTRealms is “The Pathway to Recovery" and will bring together key stakeholders in the power sector to discuss the issues prevalent in the sector with the aim of proffering solutions and charting a pathway forward especially as the country recovers from recession.

Partner and Power Sector leader, PwC Nigeria, Mr. Pedro Omontuemhen said that reliable power supply has somewhat remained a mirage years after the privatization of government owned power assets.

Stressing that, “The challenges include gas supply disruptions, weak transmission infrastructure, inappropriate pricing, power theft, slow grid extension and access to foreign exchange among others.

“For us as a firm, we are committed to helping to solve this important national problem and this informs our hosting of this forum for eight years running. The aim is to bring together stakeholders in the sector, to brainstorm on the issues and come up with viable solutions.”

In addition, he said, to ensure a very robust conversation around the theme, the firm has assembled a rich array of speakers and panelists including policy makers, operators, regulators and financiers among others.

“Their insights as well as the input of the other stakeholders will form the basis of an annual report issued by PwC on the sector providing a guide to unlocking the potential in the sector,” Omontuenhen said.

NDSF 2015 opens, as Gusau charges regulators on net neutrality study

The two-day annual Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) and IPv6 Roundtable kicked off in Lagos with the chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, calling for an industry-based study on Net Neutrality in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

Gusau who also led high level delegates at the event to declare the forum open, beckoned on industry regulators within the ICT sector like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to initate a policy study on this begging issue of net neutrality with the trend on how it could affect Nigerians, especially the Internet, so as to have a defined reasonable traffic management policy dealing on all the associated concerns arising from net neutrality with its attendant usurping of services to end-users in the country.

While reassuring on readiness of the National Assembly, especially the House of Representatives to do all their power to encourage a level playing ground, the Committee chairman expressed hope on the forthcoming 8^th session to even thrive to achieve more than the outgoing 7^th session.

Gusau also commended the role being played by DigitalSENSE Africa Media Limited in annually staging the forum, which he described as significant role endeared to multistakeholderism in its role to ensure Nigerians are enlightened enough to be able to key into the global competitive of the Internet.

According to him, by successfully organizing the Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development for the past seven years, shows commitment in leveraging the values of ICT to enlightenment and education across board and multistakeholderism approach.

“The Forum by God’s grace has become a sin qua non, in other words an essential condition; a thing that is absolutely necessary for internet community in Nigeria as industry stakeholders-based  approach to gather annually to jaw-jaw on latest issues on Internet and Internet-related matters for individuals, groups and national growth and development,” he said.

Gusau, who also presided over the forum opening session, noted that the signing of the Cyber Bill into Law by the immediate-past President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on May 15, 2015, was a plus for the National Assembly.

“I think Mr. President and indeed the National Assembly deserve an applause, and we will continue to do more in that regard,” he said.

Recalling that in 2011, at a forum by DigitalSENSE Africa Media Limited at the Golden Gate Ikoyi Lagos, I promised Nigerians that Cyber Security Act will come into play before the end of 7^th session of the National Assembly and by signing this into law by former President Jonathan; that promise has come to fulfillment.

However, he said that the theme: ‘Net Neutrality and Nigerian Internet Users’ passes for the network neutrality, Internet neutrality, or net equality principle that Internet service providers or government should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favouring or blocking particular products or websites.

Further, he said, this principle applies to the ISPs and governments to treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication. 

The term was coined by Columbia University media law professor Tim Wu in 2003, as an extension of the longstanding concept of a common carrier.

Some of the agitations arising from the debate on net neutrality, he pointed to include bandwidth throttling; data discrimination; deep packet inspection, End-to-end principle; Internet Protocol (IP); Net bias, Net Neutrality law; Search neutrality and Tiered Internet to name a few.

Of course, more than ever before the House of Representatives and at large the National Assembly, is aware of the need to enact most germane and enabling laws that are meant to induce more competition, innovation, local content as well as checkmate excesses especially in the social media through cyber laws, so that population of netizens in Nigeria will continue to swell positively.
