The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has been thrown into fresh turmoil as the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch and its stakeholders have called for the immediate resignation of the union’s President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, reports ITREALMS.

The demand, contained in a statement signed on Sunday, September 21, 2025, by Comrade Preye Odede-Graham on behalf of PTD elders and stakeholders, bore the imprimatur of Comrades (Alhaji) Tajudeen Abubakar (Kaduna Zone), Chief (Comrade) Edafe Osas (Warri Zone), Comrade Joseph Dagogo-Jack (JP) (Port Harcourt Zone), and Comrade Kolade Fadahunsi-Ojelabi (Lagos Zone).

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its two-day strike following a breakthrough agreement with the Dangote Group, brokered on Tuesday by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The industrial action, which began Monday despite federal appeals, had paralyzed fuel loading nationwide.

The Association of Distributors and Transporters of Petroleum Products (ADITOP) has accused the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) of extortion and excessive levies collection within the downstream sector.

This accusation came on the heels of a vote of no confidence passed on the leadership of NUPENG by the Lagos Zone of Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of the union (PTD).

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) has ridiculed the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) over its escalating leadership crisis, and for its lack of coordination and wisdom to peacefully mitigate the cold war between the union and the management of Dangote refinery.

The tanker drivers also called for the immediate arrest of the leaders of NUPENG by law enforcement agents especially the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of DSS so as to allow peace in the country and make Nigerians embark on their daily and legitimate businesses without any fear or molestation.
