The Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has underscored its commitment to Quality of Service (QoS) and infrastructure resilience following its 109th Board Meeting held on May 25, 2026, reports ITREALMS.
The session marked a pivotal shift toward aggressive fibre deployment and strengthened governance within the sector.
ITREALMS gathered from the official communique from the meeting that some key highlights and industry impact but not limited to consumer wins, infrastructure surge, TowerCo accountability, fixed broadband, security and digital inclusion, as well as governance overhaul.
In a landmark move for consumer protection, the NCC confirmed that directives on QoS have resulted in compensation for over 75 million subscribers affected by poor service.
Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), NCC stated, have hit a 40% milestone in their commitment to deploy 12,000 new sites, with over 5,000 sites already operational. Additionally, 700 sites have been bolstered with new fibre connectivity to enhance backhaul capacity.
While acknowledging infrastructure progress, the Board noted only partial compliance from TowerCos regarding the reinvestment of regulatory fines into escrow-funded upgrades. The Commission has signaled a push for full compliance to ensure promised network resilience.
Recognizing that mobile-only internet is reaching a saturation point, the NCC is championing a shift to Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH). Subscriptions surged from 84,141 in Q4 2025 to 210,065 in Q5 2025; a critical trend the Board intends to accelerate to support the government’s $1 trillion economy target.
The Board stated readiness to exploring a Communications Industry Security Trust Fund to combat the persistent threat of infrastructure vandalism. Furthermore, the NCC is fast-tracking a "Zero-rating" framework to make educational platforms free for Nigerian students, aiming to bridge the urban-rural digital divide.
Therefore to reposition the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) for the digital economy, the Board has appointed Princess Oforitsenere Emiko (Non-Executive Commissioner, NCC) as Interim Chairman, supported by Engr. Abraham Oshadami and Ms. Rimini Makama as interim board members.
