N10m for a corpse:
The degree in Plant Science and Biotechnology held by Musa Usman Abba was meant to be a seed for Nigeria’s agricultural future. Instead, on March 5, 2026, it became the metadata for a tragedy; a receipt for a N10 million ransom that failed to buy back a life. 

When Musa was "wasted" by bandits in the dark forests of Zamfara, the Nigerian state did not just lose a graduate; it lost the moral right to demand "National Service."

Musa’s murder is the headline that shatters the heart, but the real story of the NYSC’s collapse is being written in the "quiet" defiance of Nigerian living rooms. From the hills of Enugu to the suburbs of Lagos, a new parental decree is being whispered: "My child will not go." This is no longer a rite of passage; it is a high-stakes gamble where the house always wins and the poor always lose.

‘Buhari Paradox’ and death of character:
To understand how we arrived at this "Geography of Grief," one must look back at the last decade. There is a bitter irony that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC); a scheme built on the foundation of military-led national unity, was decimated during the administration of a retired General.

It was during this era that the "shield" of the state effectively vanished. The Federal Character Commission, the very organ designed to ensure that no Nigerian is a stranger in their own land, was stripped of its teeth and its integrity.

When the promise of "equity" and "fairness" is removed from the national equation, the NYSC stops being a tool for integration. It becomes a tool for state-sponsored vulnerability. We have replaced "National Character" with "National Neglect," sending the children of the masses into war zones while the children of the elite serve in air-conditioned offices in Abuja or don't serve at all.

Border Town Nightmare: A case study in neglect
The failure is not always as sudden as a bandit’s bullet; sometimes, it is the slow-motion trauma of neglect. Consider the recent ordeal of a Lagos-based graduate posted to a remote border town in Ogun State, just Fifty minutes from the Benin Republic.

What the call-up letter described as "Primary Assignment" was, in reality, a survivalist’s nightmare. The location had no electricity, no clean water, and no mobile network. 

The school, an unfenced compound that served as an invitation to any passing kidnapper, had less than seven students in the SS2 class. This is the great NYSC fraud: we tell ourselves we are "building the nation" by dumping our brightest minds in outposts where they cannot even charge a phone to research a lesson.

When that mother "cried her eyes out" until she successfully pulled her daughter back to the safety of Lagos, it wasn't the system working, it was a DIY miracle. It was a mother recognizing that her daughter was being used as a placeholder in a system that had already abdicated its duty of care.

Institutionalization of ‘Ransom Manual’
Perhaps the most damning indictment of the current scheme is the "Ransom Manual" culture. While official channels deny it, the advice circulating at the grassroots is clear: If you are taken, alert your parents, not the State. 

By failing to provide mandatory, state-funded life and kidnap insurance, and by allowing "death indemnity" forms to proliferate at camp gates, the government has sent a chilling message to bandits: Every Corper is a liquid asset. Their parents will sell their last plot of land to pay you. The NYSC uniform has been transformed from a symbol of pride into a "Khaki Bullseye."

Abolish or Reinvent:
The "Hardline" taken by parents nowadays is the only becoming logical survival strategy. We cannot continue to celebrate "National Integration" over open graves. If the state cannot:

Secure the Highways: Provide armed military convoys for every inter-state transit during call-up weeks.

Fence the Schools: Ensure no Corper is posted to an unfenced, high-risk facility.

Restore the Character: Fix the Federal Character Commission to ensure that "Service" is not a one-way street of risk for the Southern and Eastern youth.

...then the NYSC has no right to exist.
To the parents of Musa Usman Abba, and the thousands of others currently "servicing ransom for Fatherland," the nation owes you more than a letter of condolence. It owes you the abolition of a meat grinder that refuses to reinvent itself. Until the State can protect the citizen, it has no right to conscript the graduate.
