Bama massacre: Families mourn as UN decries killing of over 50 civilians - ITREALMS

Shock and grief have gripped Darajamal village in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State after suspected non-state armed groups launched a deadly night attack that left more than 50 people dead, homes reduced to ashes, and families torn apart, reports ITREALMS.

Eyewitness accounts describe panic as villagers fled into the darkness, some carrying children, others abandoning belongings as gunmen swept through their community. 

Survivors said many of those killed were farmers and traders who had only recently returned from displacement camps to rebuild their lives.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, said he was “deeply appalled and saddened” by the carnage, calling for justice for the victims and the immediate release of those abducted.

He extended condolences to grieving families and urged the protection of civilians under international law.

This latest massacre adds to a wave of violence that has claimed hundreds of lives across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe this year. 

In recent months, attacks have spread beyond villages to IDP camps, markets, and even rural health centers, leaving civilians increasingly vulnerable and fearful.

For Darajamal, the scars go beyond statistics: dozens of families are now homeless, children orphaned, and survivors left to nurse injuries both physical and emotional. 

As aid agencies scramble to respond, the UN has reaffirmed its commitment to support communities battered by conflict and displacement.
