The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has sounded the alarm over what it describes as a brazen attack on press freedom, condemning the abrupt closure of Badeggi Radio by Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, reports ITREALMS.
In a strongly-worded press statement available to ITREALMS on Sunday night, the NGE expressed deep concern over the governor's actions, which they say undermine the fundamental principles of democracy and the role of the media in holding those in power accountable.
The press statement, jointly signed by the NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh described the action as a "blatant attack on press freedom and democracy."
The editors' body argued that the closure undermines the fundamental principles of a democratic society, where a free press is essential for holding those in power accountable. They cited Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, which guarantee freedom of expression and press freedom.
NGE expressed concern that the closure threatens the fabric of democracy and undermines the role of the media in public discourse. They noted that Governor Bago acted outside his powers, as the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is the sole authority to sanction television and radio stations.
The Guild welcomed the Minister of Information's observation that the NBC has the mandate to regulate broadcasting. They demanded the unsealing of the radio station's premises and investigation into the allegations.
NGE urged the media to adhere to the code of ethics while calling on authorities to respect citizens' rights to access information and express themselves freely. They demanded the reopening of Badeggi Radio pending investigation and reiterated that a free and independent press is essential for a functioning democracy.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, has also taken note of the concerns and appealed for calm, stating that the NBC has the necessary mechanisms to resolve the issue fairly.
