The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Executive Council (NEC) recently held a meeting in Abuja, where they discussed several key issues affecting the journalism profession and the country.
ITREALMS gathered from the communique that some main points and key resolutions include:
Upgrade of International Institute of Journalism (IIJ):
The NEC endorsed plans to upgrade the IIJ to enable it to issue a broader range of professional certificates, strengthening capacity-building in the journalism profession.
Journalist Welfare:
The President emphasized the importance of continuous training and retraining of journalists, particularly in emerging areas like cybercrime reporting, and advised practitioners to remain ethical, professional, and committed to the public interest.
Condemnation of Journalist Impostors:
The NEC condemned activities of impostors parading themselves as journalists using counterfeit press stickers and urged security agencies and the public to remain vigilant and report such individuals.
Protection of Lives and Property:
The NEC urged the Federal Government to direct security agencies to prioritize protection of lives and property, expressing concern over increasing cases of killings across the country.
Addressing Poverty and Unemployment:
The NEC further urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts in addressing poverty and unemployment, underlying factors fueling insecurity.
Rehabilitation of Federal Highways:
The Council called on the Federal Government to reconstruct and rehabilitate critical federal highways in a dilapidated state.
Agricultural Support:
The NEC also urged the government to provide farmers with adequate agricultural inputs and support to ensure a successful planting season, improve food security, and stimulate economic growth.
Vote of Confidence:
A vote of confidence was unanimously passed on the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, and the Central Working Committee for their visionary leadership and commitment to the growth and unity of the Union.
Delta State Council Issue:
The NEC deliberated on a petition of gross misconduct against the Chairman and Secretary of Delta State Council, resolving that they tender an unreserved apology to those affected within one week.
In addition, the NUJ NEC meeting also celebrated the Union's 70th anniversary, highlighting its commitment to professional journalism and national development. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, acknowledged the media's crucial role in Nigeria's democratic journey and encouraged journalists to project the country's democratic gains and progress stories positively.²
