10th NASS: Akpabio emerges Senate President, Abbas becomes Speaker - ITREALMS

The 10th National Assembly has elected the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio as President with Senator Barai Jubril from Kano State as the Deputy Senate President, reports

This is coming as the Federal House of Representatives also elected Hon. Tajudeen Abbas from Zaria Federal Constituency of Kaduna State as its Speaker and Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu of Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State was elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker.


ITREALMS gathered that Senator Akpabio, who represents Akwa-Ibom North West Senatorial District, scored 63 votes to emerge against his rival, Sen. Abdulaziz Yari who polled 46 votes.

At the green chamber, Hon. Abbas clinched 353 votes to emerge against Hon. Aminu Jaji and Hon. Idris Wase, who got three votes each.

ITREALMS recalled that Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio was born 9 December 1962, was the former governor of Akwa-Ibom State between 2007 and 2015. He trained as a lawyer who later joined politics. 

Akpabio served as minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022 and resigned on 11 May 2022 on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to contest in the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress. He emerged Senate president on June 13, 2023.

Equally, 
ITREALMS recalled that Dr Abbas, born on October 1, 1963, in Kaduna State hailed from the Zazzau Emirate and is a prince with the traditional title of the Iyan Zazzau. He also holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna, in 1988 and 1993 respectively, topping it with PhD in business management from the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto in 2010.

Abbas was a lecturer at the Kaduna State University (KASU) until 2001 when he join the Nigerian Tobacco Distribution Company, now the British-American Tobacco Company as marketing manager.

In 2011, Hon. Abbas won a seat at the Federal House of Representatives and is reputed to have sponsored a record-breaking 74 bills out of which 21 were signed into law between 2019 to 2023. 

He served in various committees including as chairman, Land Transport as at the time of his latest election as speaker.
