The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has penalized two Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) companies over unregistered SIM cards found on their networks, reports ITRealms.

NCC stipulates a fine of N200,000 for every pre-registered SIM card found to be active on any telecom operator's network in Nigeria.

As it is, Globacom and Etisalat Nigeria received  a total of N14.4 million penalty for failure to disconnect unregistered SIMs on their networks, ITRealms investigation on NCC site revealed.

According to the NCC, its monitoring team discovered 37 pre-registered SIM cards on the Globacom network and 35 such cards on the Etisalat network.

The fines must be paid by September 7 or they will start to increase by N100,000 per day. Globacom is to pay N7.4 million, while Etisalat will cough out N7 million.
