Imagine your president is digitally hijacked? - ITREALMS

Commentary@ITREALMS:
Health Care Concerns: Let us imagine there is a mega cyber cum digital security trap awaiting developing nations! Can your President and African Presidents in particular who receive health care delivery services outside their countries become a victim of intelligent microchip implant into their bodies as a way of hijacking the control of governance of a nation?

With Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics, nothing is impossible! Simply defined, a human microchip implant is typically an integrated circuit device with identification and control capabilities. The above may therefore be classified as the mega Cybersecurity concern – when the president is digitally and remotely hijacked. The crisis situation and disaster recovery response certainly dwarfs what we know as cyber threat today! Can chip implant order a president to perform instructions he doesn’t want to perform?

When it comes to technologies, especially information and communications technology, health issues occupy a very sensitive high priority. In this era of intensive research in IoT and related embedded intelligent systems, developing nations should be concerned on the state of development, competence, capacities and capabilities of their Health Care sector, facilities and delivery systems. Mind control is possible through human implant.

Thinking outside the box, if we agree that the digital workplace revolution is irreversible and leaves no avenue of escape for anyone – especially when it is now almost a done deal that AI and Robots will replace qualified teachers in a decade or so; then, it therefore becomes easy to reason that a combination of concealed microchip implant, AI and Robots can covertly takeover the President’s mind and governance of the unconscious and unprepared nation. Today, regime change is by force or arms. Tomorrow it may be via chip implant!

Chip technology and health issues have come a long way in the scientific research domain. Well documented studies reveal that the first experiments with Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) implant was carried out in 1998 by the British scientist Kevin Warwick. This intelligent chip implant was used to open doors, switch on lights, and cause verbal output within a building. RFID uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. Without doubt, RFID has significant wide range uses to our lives and world. From digital library, health records management, aviation system tracking, supermarket product identification, credit cards and many more.

Also, according to Wiki, “on 16 March 2009 British scientist Mark Gasson had an advanced glass capsule RFID device surgically implanted into his left hand. In April 2010 Gasson's team demonstrated how a computer virus could wirelessly infect his implant and then be transmitted on to other systems. Gasson reasoned that with implanted technology the separation between man and machine can become theoretical because the technology can be perceived by the human as being a part of their body. Because of this development in our understanding of what constitutes our body and its boundaries he became credited as being the first human infected by a computer virus”.

Indeed, the national risk of the future of digital workplace takeover by external forces is not limited to the teaching, greater part of engineering, legal, aviation, agricultural and other critical professions but to those of human resources management, physical security, policy makers, leadership, etc. Engaging the emerging monumental challenges dictates that unless we retool the education and entire national workforce, massively invest in the software engineering, enthrone e-Government and knowledge workforce capacity building, we may be further surprised with a sudden eclipse of our efforts to deliver sustainable development. Education, health, digital and environmental infrastructure remains non-negotiable strategic imperatives.

Chinje laments 9,400 Nigerians seeking EU asylum, tasks Nigerian media – ITREALMS

The Senior Special Advisor to the African Media Initiative (AMI) Mr. Eric Chinje, has decried the fact that Africans still seek migration in this 21st century, even as he lamented the application of 9,400 Nigerians who sought asylum in the European Union (EU), reports ITREALMS.

Speaking at the day-1 of the three-day Media and Migration Training for Journalists and Educators in Lagos, Mr. Chinje, said that Africans’ migration story is a sad one.

As said by him, at the training hosted by Africa Positive in collaboration with AMI, Erich Boost Institute, Africans have lots of stateless citizens within the continent than those migrating outside.

Condemning the 9,400 applications seeking for asylum in European Countries, he said, out of this figure, estimated 7,000 of Nigerians were denied asylum as at the first quarter of this year.

He pointed out that people usually migrate within their region, stressing that in African-European comparison as at 2017, 19 million Africans migrate within the continent, just as 9 million Africans migrated to Europe whereas the migration from Europe to Africa is negligible.

On historical peak, he lamented that a total of 158 million migrants and refugees worldwide in 2017, pointing out that altogether, more than two thirds, which is about 68 per cent of all refugees worldwide came from just five countries.

These countries, he listed to include Syrian Arab Republic – 6.3 million, Afghanistan – 2.6 million, South Sudan – 2.4 million, Myanmar – 1.2 million and Somalia – 986,400.

He insisted that for the continent to make a difference, media like in Nigeria must identify and prioritize issues of interest to the populace in order to bring change to the governance, since political leaderships often listen and follow media trends.

“Media tell people what to think about via agenda setting,” he declared, emphasizing that readers and audiences learn not only about a given issue, but also how much importance to attach to that issue from the amount of information in a news story and its positions.

This, he said, points to how a given information is presented to the audience and framed will determine how it would influence the choices people make about how to process that information.

Maintaining that media, especially in Nigeria has a huge role to play to curtail the peak of migration from the continent and the country precisely.

Family bank rides on SimbaPay for Chinese Yuan - ITREALMS

Acclaimed leading bank in Kenya, Family Bank Limited is riding on partnership with London-based financial technology firm SimbaPay to launch an instant money transfer service from Kenya to China through WeChat – a service that will help boost Kenya-China trade, reports ITREALMS.

Over seven million customers and businesses in Kenya will now access SimbaPay’s international money transfer service to send money to China’s WeChat Pay from Family Bank’s PesaPap mobile banking application and USSD service. Non-customers too will enjoy the service via a dedicated PayBill number 261059 on MPESA.

With over 1 billion subscribers, WeChat is the largest payment and social media app in China. This initiative therefore connects Africa’s largest mobile money ecosystem to China’s largest payment service in real-time.

“This is a huge milestone for us and our customers. We are glad to extend, more so to our SME customers, a solution that offers an instant, reliable, traceable and affordable channel to send money to their suppliers and business partners in China,” said Family Bank Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Godfrey Kamau.

China is Kenya’s biggest trading partner. In 2017 alone, businesses in Kenya imported well over USD 4 billion worth of goods from China. The current existing solutions for sending money to China take multiple days to reach the recipient’s bank account, with some requiring the supplier to physically visit an agent to collect their money. This new service easily overcomes these barriers.

With the increased efficiency provided by this new service, traders in Kenya will replenish stock faster, thus bolstering trade between the two nations. Additionally, financial inclusion will be positively impacted as more small scale traders will be able to directly source goods from China instead of depending on middlemen to make payments on their behalf.

Aba power project gets Shell, Geometric GACN deal on gas supply - ITREALMS

ITREALMS:
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) and its joint partners have signed a gas supply and aggregation agreement that will support the 140 Megawatts Aba Integrated Power Project in Abia State. The agreement, signed on Friday in Abuja, was between SPDC, Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL); and Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN), reports ITREALMS.

By the agreement, ITREALMS gathered that SPDC will supply gas from the SPDC joint venture gas plant in Imo River traversing Abia and Rivers States to the power producer, Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL) via a gas pipeline network which is already installed.

“This is a further demonstration of our commitment to supporting Nigeria’s industrialisation through gas,” said the Managing Director of SPDC and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor.

Okunbor, who was represented by SPDC’s General Manager, Business and Government Relations, Bashir Bello, noted: “For more than 50 years, Shell has been in the forefront of the campaign to develop and monetise Nigeria's huge gas resources and it is good to see more players joining the fray to grow the gas market and help improve lives and the earnings in Nigeria.”

Speaking at the agreement-signing ceremony, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, described the Aba Independent Power Project as a potential catalyst for opening up the Aba market for economic growth.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Fiscal Strategy, Dr. Tim Okon, the minister said the government was determined to ensure commercial sustainability of any such project with the potential to grow the gas market.

Chief Executive Officer of GAPL, Prof. Bath Nnaji said the project was structured to incentivise gas suppliers to invest in gas production for the domestic market, adding: “We are confident that the structure will serve as a model for other gas-to-power-projects in Nigeria.”

The Managing Director of GACN, Morgan Okwoche, who signed on behalf of the company described the project as the foremost private off-grid gas supply and aggregation agreement that would enhance industrial growth and economic development.

Those who witnessed the signing ceremony included the General Manager Petroleum Engineering of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Muazu Awaisu, who represented the Group Managing Director of NNPC; and the General Manager Gas Portfolio of SPDC, Yemi Famori.

The SPDC JV owns the 650MW Afam VI power plant in Afam, River State which in 2017 supplied 15% of Nigeria’s grid-connected electricity.

Yayi 2019: Senator explains why NASS is probing sale of Etisalat – ITREALMS

The Senator representing the Lagos State West Senatorial district, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, aka Yayi has explained why he sponsored the motion to investigate the near-collapse of former Etisalat, a mobile network operator (MNO), now trading as 9mobile, following the operators inability to repay multi-million dollar loan, reports ITREALMS.

Disclosing this to ITREALMS at the weekend during when 2019 campaign train stopped over at the Lagos State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at a forum tagged Meet the Press Forum, Senator Adeola, said the motion became imperative because Nigerians have vested interest in the telecommunications companies existence and have invested heavily since it began operation in the country over eight years ago.

This, ITREALMS gathered is coming as the bills for upgrading of Yaba College of Technology, Yaba-Lagos and Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State to degree-awarding universities of technologies, have passed first readings respectively.

He told ITREALMS led to the ongoing investigations by a Senate Committee on Banking and Financial Institutions.

Adeola, who also is the pioneer chairman of Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Local Content, told ITREALMS that he sponsored the motion to “investigate Revenue Generating Agencies over alleged leakages non-remittances and misuse of generated revenue by MDAs.”

Additionally, he sponsored motion for legislative investigation of “Local Content Elements and Cost Variation of the Egina Oil Field Project and other Related Matters.”

“It’s noteworthy that all these motions led to Senate resolutions for investigations to expose corruption or inefficiency which indeed is the hallmark of the role of a legislator in oversight duties,” he declared.

According to the Senator, he had sponsored some 15 bills in the last three years including the two seeking to upgrade Yaba Tech and Federal Polytechnic Ilaro to universities of technologies among others.

“So far, I have single handedly introduced 15 bills to the 8th Senate while co-sponsoring many others including the passed, ‘Sexual Harassment Bill and Special Status for Lagos Bill,’” he said.

Sanwo-Olu to Agbaje: Lagos not in bondage - ITREALMS

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said Lagosians are free citizens and not in bondage in what seemed to be an overt response to the campaign theme of his opponent, reports ITREALMS.

Sanwo-Olu stated this on Sunday at the Palace of the Akran of Badagry Aholu De Wheno Menu Toyi 1 during a consultative visit to the traditional rulers in the Badagry division.

In a direct response to the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Jimi Agbaje, who said Lagosians were in bondage, Sanwo-Olu said Lagosians had not been enslaved under the APC-led government, noting that the state had achieved accelerated prosperity since 1999 due to the tenacity and purposefulness of the ruling party.

Highlighting the numerous infrastructural needs of the Badagry division, the APC standard-bearer promised to speedily address some of the listed concerns of the people.

He said: “Some have started talking about freedom and insinuated that Lagos is in bondage. Unfortunately, we cannot begin to talk about freedom in the 21st century. This is insulting to humanity and the people of Lagos especially because slavery and bondage were abolished in Badagry several decades ago. When they talk about freedom, we ask them freedom from what? We have had our freedom and everyone in Lagos is free. We have since moved away from the era of slavery, to era of prosperity with deep-seated aspiration for greater Lagos.

"We are aware of the challenges facing the people of Badagry on the rehabilitation of the expressway and we are promising that our administration would immediately hit the ground running and ensure the completion of that important road immediately we assume office by your votes.”

Sanwo-Olu reminded the royal fathers of the economic importance of tourism to the GDP of the state, maintaining that he would ensure a speedy completion of all projects that will improve the quality of lives of the people.

"It is no brainer that once we fix infrastructure, it will automatically jump-start development in the area. That's why it has become expedient for us to look critically into this before we can even think of other things. I am promising you today that Badagry will assume her pride of place in tourism if you give us your votes,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The team stopped at the Palace of the Onijanikin of Ijanikin land, Oba Mohammed Ashafa who praised Sanwo-Olu for his punctuality, saying the candidate's sense of timeliness spoke of his character as a man of honour. Speaking on behalf of the royal fathers in Aworiland, the Oniba of Ibaland endorsed the candidacy of Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat

NASS advised to prioritize Digital Rights Bill - ITREALMS

The digital rights and inclusion group, Paradigm Initiative has expressed concerns over the delay in transmitting the Digital Rights and Freedom Bill (HB490) to President Muhammadu Buhari for his assent, urging the National Assembly (NASS) and the executive arms to ensure the bill is signed before the 2019 elections, reports ITREALMS.

A  press statement signed by the organisation’s Communications Officer, Sodiq Alabi, the group  noted that

The landmark Bill, ITREALMS recalled was initially passed by the Senate in March 2018 after previously passed by the House of Representatives in December 2017. After an eight-month delay, the National Assembly reworked Clause 4 of the Bill after a concern was raised by the Directorate of Legal Services of the National Assembly. The new version of the Bill was passed by the Senate last Tuesday, November 27.

While speaking on the issue, Digital Rights Program Manager for Paradigm Initiative, Adeboye Adegoke spoke about the delay experienced in transmitting the Bill to the President. “Since the first passage of the Bill, we have been following up with the National Assembly on its onward transmission. We sent freedom of information requests which were not replied and have since been left to wonder why it is taking so long to transmit the Bill to the President for his assent. Now that the Senate has reworked and re-passed the Bill, we hope that the bill will be immediately transmitted to the President.”

Executive Director, Paradigm Initiative ‘Gbenga Sesan, however, provided some succour while speaking on the issue, “We are in constant communication with key stakeholders in the National Assembly and we have been assured that the Bill will soon be forwarded to President Buhari for assent”

“Given the President’s recent spate of refusal to assent to a number of Bills sent by the National Assembly, it is understood that the National Assembly is doing extra work to ensure that the Digital Rights and Freedom Bill is not refused assent for technical reasons. A member of the Senate was recently quoted as saying that President Buhari refused his assent to 15 Bills in a single day, and we do not want to see the Digital Rights and Freedom Bill suffer such fate,” says Sesan

Speaking further on the Bill, Adeboye asserted that the Bill is poised to put Nigeria on the global map as a rights-respecting country. “This week, the Government of Germany, which currently chairs the Freedom Online Coalition, hosted the 7th Annual Freedom Online Conference, a multi-stakeholder event with governments, civil society, the private sector, and others – to share relevant information, develop joint strategies and combine efforts towards their mutual goal of a human rights-based Internet. We equally want to see Nigeria join in on these important questions and this can be done by ensuring the Digital Rights and Freedom Bill becomes law and reference legislation for other countries across the globe.”

Lagos APC denies removal of PDP campaign materials - ITREALMS

The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State has denied the alleged removal of campaign materials belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, reports ITREALMS.

Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, in a press statement made available to ITREALMS, said their attention has been drawn to the claim by PDP Lagos that its Campaign Materials are being pulled down in Lagos by people suspected to be APC Members.

"Our initial reaction when the statement was brought to our notice was to ignore the story because it is not the character of APC members to engage in acts of brigandage and political recklessness. But on a second thought we decided to issue this statement to put the records straight and put lazy politicians in PDP on their toes.

"Lagos APC is made up of committed, disciplined and well behaved followers who do not need to go the way of the rudderless and uncoordinated brunch known as members of PDP in Lagos and that of Nigeria as a whole. We do not need the help of anybody to thrash whatever that is remaining of PDP in Lagos, if at all they still exist.

"Even though we suspect that miserable PDP followers can deliberately pull down their posters and push it to APC, we passionately appeal to all our members not to take laws into their by tampering with PDP campaign materials in the name of helping our party. You have no right to do so and you cannot do so. We do not need such help from anybody. It is undemocratic, primitive, illegal and unacceptable. Please do not bring shame to our great Party.

"It is too early for Lagos PDP to start throwing its hands up in total surrender when the game is just about to start. Morbid fear of another crushing defeat is starring them in the face and they think what we call ‘whispering in the dark’ will help the dying party to save its ugly and battered face. While we appeal to millions of Lagos APC members not to play into the hands of the weak and totally decimated political enemies, we are quick to remind Lagos PDP of the events of November 2014 when It worked in tandem with the Police, SURE-P, FERMA, Army, Civil Defense and some other groups to unleash terror on Ikorodu road up to Funsho Williams Avenue and others pulling down APC Campaign materials and Billboards in the full glare of member of the public. We cannot forget this in a hurry.

"Henceforth Lagos APC will ignore the  rumours of the market place and the poor antics of the opposition and concentrate on the real issues-based campaigns ahead of February and March 2019 Presidential and Governorship elections. We will not continue to waste our precious gift of time to talk about a non existing party that is at the crossroads."

Nigerians dominate gender parity in 100 Most Influential Africans - ITREALMS

Nigerians have once again dominated this year’s list in terms of entries, followed by Kenyans in the New African 100 most influential Africans, reports ITREALMS.

The list, ITREALMS gathered is for the first time having gender balanced, just as quadruplet covers featured Mo Salah, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Denis Mukwege and Ahmed Abiy.
“For the first time since publishing the list, there is an equal amount of men and women featuring in this year’s one hundred. Although this year’s listing is dominated by entries from Nigeria and Kenya, outstanding personalities from several other African countries are also featured,” a press statement from the publishers read.

The December issue is published with four different covers featuring: Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Ahmed Abiy, arguably Africa’s person of the year; the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize co-winner DR Congo’s Dr Denis Mukwege; Botswana’s 32-year old Minister of Trade  Investment  Bogolo Joy Kenewendo; and Egypt’s soccer superstar, Mo Salah whose influence goes well beyond football.

The annual list has become an industry and readers’ much-awaited collation – revealing Africans who contributed in shaping the African narrative in the concluding year and envisaged to play a big role in the coming year, both on the continent and in the Diaspora.

Collated by and from its global network of correspondents and industry insiders, this year’s listing consists of some regular names, and some of them returning for the second, even third year such as businessman Aliko Dangote.  The final 2018 tally sees a drop in the number of entries for politicians, but an increase in the arts and culture section at 16 and 22 entries respectively.

In terms of countries, entries are led by Nigeria with 18 names followed by Kenya (11) South Africa (10) Egypt (8) and Ethiopia (7).

“One yardstick which we often employ when coming up with the final list is to emphasise that influence is not about popularity and popularity is not always influential. The influencer’s impact on public, social and political discourse, however, is what largely helps us determine their influence. Most importantly we focus mainly on people who have been influential for Africa’s good,” says reGina Jane Jere – editor of the magazine’s sister publication – New African Woman, who leads and oversees the 100 Most Influential Africans project.

With many reports indicating how gender parity improves the quality of governance and accelerates development, and in a year that has seen the emboldening of gender issues, with countries such Ethiopia even taking a lead in achieving gender parity in Cabinet, and appointing its first ever female President under its new reformist Prime Minister Ahmed Abiy, the magazine felt it apt to produced a 50/50 ratio in this year’s list. According to the editor of the magazine, Anver Versi, this happened as much by chance as it did by design. “When whittling down the nominees and choosing our hundred, we ended with an equal number of women and men. That was the premise of this year’s ranking but it happened naturally!”

One other outstanding feature of this year’s list is the increased inclusion of people of African descent making their mark at a global level in the African Diaspora. “This is a clear indication of the wealth of talent that our continent possesses and shows that given the slightest opportunity, our men and women can eclipse their peers worldwide in their chosen fields of endeavour,” explains Versi.

Also of note is the inclusion of men and women in the seemingly unglamorous fields such as conservation and climate change, whose work is often overlooked by the media.
