The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) wishes to officially inform telecoms consumers, whose Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards are barred from making calls, that affected SIMs will not be unbarred by the service providers until they are linked with the National Identification Numbers (NINs) of the SIM holders.

This information has become necessary in view of a viral web link (https://bit.ly/NCC-Sim-Unbar-Gov-Ng) being circulated on social media and on some websites.

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa has underscored the benefits of linking the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) of telecommunications subscribers with the National Identification Number (NIN), reports ITREALMS.

According to him, the ongoing linkage of NIN-SIM would support the government’s efforts in checking the activities fraudsters and cybercriminals.

The Ministerial Task Force on NIN-SIM Linkage has on monthly average, about 2.6 million Subscribers Identification Module (SIM) linked, reports ITREALMS.

Even as the number of enrolment centres have increased nationwide with about 3,800 currently available for this exercise.

The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, chaired the meeting of the Ministerial Task Force on the NIN-SIM data linkage.  

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the EVC/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), DG/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), DG/CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Representative of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).  Others included the NCC Executive Commissioners Technical Services and Stakeholder Management, MD/CEOs of MTN, Airtel, EMTS (9Mobile), NTEL, Spectranet and SMILE, as well as the COO of Glo.
