Vodafone Egypt restarts business support system deal with Ericsson - ITREALMS

Vodafone Egypt has extended partnership with Ericsson to transform the service provider’s Business Support System (BSS) into an industrialized, real-time converged environment, reports ITREALMS.

In addition, upgrades to the latest versions of Ericsson Charging and Ericsson Mediation will facilitate a seamless evolution towards 5G/IoT readiness by helping Vodafone Egypt meet customer demands with new offers, strengthen competitiveness, enable flexibility to meet market demands, and reduce co sts through streamlined operations.

In the ongoing contract, Ericsson is responsible for solution design and deployment as well as competence development. Ericsson’s BSS solution enables Vodafone Egypt to offer a wider range of unique services including real-time promotions and notifications, product and services cross bundling, real-time cost control for postpaid subscriptions, subscriber personalization, and flexible mobile wallets.

The extended contract allows Vodafone Egypt to focus its efforts on product development while having clearer visibility and more control over capital and operating expense.

ITU takes ICT regulators to Egypt for symposium

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has concluded plans this year to take its prestigious annual Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) to Egypt, reports ITRealms.

GSR 2016, ITRealms gathered is the world’s pre-eminent assembly of the global Information and Communication Technology (ICT) regulatory community.

ITU in a press statement made available to ITRealms says it decided to take GSR slated between May 11 and14 2016, at the Red Sea Resort of Sharm el-Sheikh at the invitation of the Government of Egypt,

The GSR-16, ITRealms reports would welcome world-class speakers with a dynamic programme focused around the theme of ‘Be Empowered, Be Included: Building Blocks for Smart Societies in a Connected World’. 

ITRealms further gathered that the symposium would be chaired by Mostafa Abd El-Wahed, Acting Chairman of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA).

Equally, ITRealms recalls that ITU is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies, driving innovation in ICTs together with 193 Member States and a membership of over 700 private sector entities and academic institutions.

Established over 150 years ago in 1865, ITU is the intergovernmental body responsible for coordinating the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promoting international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, improving communication infrastructure in the developing world, and establishing the worldwide standards that foster seamless interconnection of a vast range of communications systems.

ICT ranking: Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt crash

The Networked Readiness Index (NRI) managed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has shown that South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria were ranked low on the global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) development, reports ITRealms.

While South Africa fell five places and now ranks 75^th; Egypt dropped three places to now rank 94^th; Nigeria's position dropped seven places to 119^th.

ITRealms also gathered that even though ranking below South Africa, Kenya's position appeared more impressive as it actually climbed six places to 86th position in the global record.

NRI, the report said, is a crucial indicator of a country's capacity and readiness to execute and take full advantage of ICTs in businesses, economic development and global competitiveness. 

The 2015 edition of the Global Information Technology Report (GITR),  ITRealms learnt, is released to provide benefits for entire populations of countries assessed.

The Managing Director of WEF, Espen Barth Eide, said "advanced economies have not yet reached their full potential thus struggling with persistently high unemployment, rising inequalities, and fiscal challenges. Emerging markets and developing economies are facing stronger headwinds than before and need to adjust their development models to ensure economic growth and a more broad-based distribution of gains".

Eide disclosed that the impact of ICTs extends well beyond productivity gains and acts as a vector of social development and transformation by improving access to basic services, enhancing connectivity, and creating employment opportunities, ITRealms gathered.

GITR, ITRealms reports, is published by WEF in partnership with Cornell University and INSEAD since 2001, and has measured the major players of the ICT revolution using the NIR.
