EROSION THREAT @2nd Niger Bridge: Critical infrastructure failure looms - ITREALMS

Urgent intervention is required to avert a major structural collapse and potential loss of lives at the Onitsha-Owerri Road interchange connecting the Second Niger Bridge, as severe gully erosion continues to undercut the main expressway, reports ITREALMS.

Field observations on Monday, August 17, 2026, revealed that persistent floodwaters have hollowed out the road's foundation by approximately 3 feet from the asphalt edge.
Unaware of the critical structural failure beneath, heavy trucks and commuter vehicles continue to traverse the compromised route daily.

The erosion, driven by heavy seasonal rainfall, has bypassed existing drainage channels and carved deep washouts into unpaved embankment slopes.

Sections of the interchange reinforced with concrete pavement and stone pitching remain structurally intact, highlighting an incomplete execution of slope protection across the surrounding terrain.

Civil observers and local road users are urging the Federal Ministry of Works, led by Senator Dave Umahi, and relevant infrastructural authorities to deploy emergency intervention measures.

Stakeholders warned that failure to promptly reinforce the compromised sections risks a complete severance of the arterial route, threatening critical regional transport links between Anambra and neighboring commercial hubs.
