The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) made headlines on July 4, 2025, with the suspension of one of its members, Mr. Steve Osuji, for a serious breach of journalistic ethics, reports ITREALMS.
The suspension stemmed from Osuji's decision to publish an article based on a keynote address delivered by the Director-General of the Department of State Servics (DSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, at the NGE's 25th Biennial National Convention in Enugu.
ITREALMS gathered that the address was explicitly agreed upon as "off-the-record" and not for publication. However, Osuji went ahead to share the contents of the presentation on his social media platforms, compromising the integrity of the profession and undermining the trust between the DSS and the media.
The NGE took swift action, investigating the matter and confirming that Osuji's actions were a clear breach of the Code of Ethics for journalists in Nigeria. As a result, Osuji was suspended from the Guild for one year, effective immediately.
In a press statement, the NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, apologized to the Director-General of the SSS and the institution he represents for the embarrassment caused by Osuji's actions.
They reaffirmed the Guild's commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalism and ensuring that its members adhere to the code of ethics.
The suspension serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and trust in journalistic practices.
According to NGE, "'Off-the-record' agreements are a crucial aspect of journalism, allowing sources to share sensitive information while protecting their identities. Breaching such agreements can have serious consequences, damaging relationships between journalists and their sources."
Osuji, they also said, has the opportunity to appeal the decision, but for now, the NGE has made it clear that it will not tolerate any actions that compromise the integrity of the profession.
The Guild, therefore, remained dedicated to promoting professional conduct and maintaining public trust in the media.
Industry watchers, informed ITREALMS that the incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in balancing the need for transparency and accountability with the importance of maintaining confidentiality and trust with sources.
Experts highlighted that as the media landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for journalists to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism.
In this case, the NGE has sent a strong message that breaches of trust will not be tolerated, and that its members are expected to uphold the principles of journalistic integrity.
