Grief has enveloped the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) community following the sudden and tragic death of Nwachukwu Omiko, a final-year student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, reports ITREALMS.
ITREALMS gathered from eyewitness accounts which indicated that Omiko was playing with fellow students when he suddenly collapsed on the pitch. Friends immediately attempted to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The university administration was promptly alerted to the incident.
According to a press statement available to ITREALMS by the University's Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, Omiko was swiftly transported to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, in the university's ambulance, which is equipped with oxygen. Tragically, doctors at FMC confirmed his passing upon arrival.
In the official statement, the Vice-Chancellor of MOUAU, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, expressed the university's profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to Omiko's parents, family, and his peers within the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.
"The University deeply regrets the loss of Mr. Omiko despite the immediate efforts made to save his life," the statement conveyed.
This heartbreaking incident has ignited concerns within the university community regarding student safety during sporting activities and the availability of adequate on-site medical support.
Students and faculty members are likely to raise questions about emergency protocols and the presence of trained medical personnel during such events.
In a proactive move following the tragedy, the University Management has urged all students to undergo health checks at the University Health Services upon their return to campus. They also advised students with pre-existing health conditions to refrain from strenuous exercises.
The loss of Nwachukwu Omiko, described as a dedicated student by his department, is a significant blow to the university community, particularly his fellow final-year students as they approach their graduation. The university is expected to provide further information regarding any memorial services or support for the grieving students and family in due course.
