A 23-year-old male, Solomon Fabiyi, has been arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command for attempted money ritual with his seven-year old nephew, Jomiloju, reports ITREALMS.
ITREALMS, saying that Fabiyi who lives with his victim's parents in Ado-Ekiti, was apprehended on Friday, February 14, 2025, before he could carry out the act.
Also, Abutu confirmed that Fabiyi had confessed to the crime and was already arraigned.
“He was arrested by our operatives on Friday, 14th February 2025 at about 19:00hrs through a tip-off while he was on the verge of using nephew for money ritual,” Abutu said.
ITREALMS recalled that a viral video on social media showed Fabiyi, who hails from Ayedun in Oke Ero Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State, admitting that a local herbalist instructed him to find someone for the ritual.
As said by Fabiyi, the herbalist had assured him that the victim would not die but would suffer from an ailment.
But, in a twist of events, the same herbalist alerted the police when Fabiyi brought the child for the ritual, leading to his arrest.
But after a brief interrogation, the herbalist allegedly rejected his candidate and promptly reported him to the police, obviously through a phone call.
ITREALMS equally recalled that recently, the ResearchGate study on “The Growing Phenomenon of Money Rituals-Motivated Killings in Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation into the Factors Responsible” indicated how beliefs in magical powers and related sacred activities, particularly those that accept human body parts for ritual sacrifices.
Often, the study revealed these sacrifices are in return for fortunes, alongside poverty, unemployment, and quest for wealth as predictors responsible for the increase in money ritual–related killings in Ilorin Emirate of Kwara State, Nigeria.
Kwara State borders Ekiti State to the south, and Ekiti State borders Kwara State to the north.
Further, the study noted a total of 1736 respondents were selected using simple random sampling techniques. While the instrument employed for data collection was a questionnaire.
In addition, ITREALMS gathered that the information was thereafter analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences.
The results indicated that the increase in money ritual–related killings in Ilorin Emirate is a result of the general belief that ritual sacrifices enhance fortunes, the boundless desire for material wealth among Nigerians, unemployment, and poverty in Nigeria.
The study further suggested that there should be public enlightenment in all languages spoken in Nigeria about the dangers in associating individual success with spiritual influences.
