An information technology (IT) expert and religious leader, Rev. Canon Sunday Folayan, has called on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to immediately investigate the use of its machine at Republic of Niger for the National Identification Number (NIN), reports ITREALMS.

NIN, ITREALMS gathered is for all citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero, that is, at birth and above are eligible to enroll.

ITREALMS recalled that Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had last weekend revealed its troops have arrested some fake NIMC officials registering non-Nigerians in the Republic of Niger, with some of the items recovered from the suspects including NIN registration machine, printing machine, laminating machine, a computer tracking machine and a generator set among others.

Reacting to this report, Rev. Folayan, an engineer and techpreneur, demanded quick investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the NIN machine found in the possession of the alleged fake NIMC staff by the Commission.

He expressed concerns that there should be an official NIMC position made available to the populace on the arrest, especially over the tools recovered and specifically the NIN machine.

According to Folayan, the immediate past-president of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), it would be a surprise if the Army or Defence Headquarters should delve into investigating the veracity of the NIN machine in the possession of the fake staff.

He insisted that the Army is not expected to dig more on the machine, because, “That is not their responsibility. I will be surprised if they do.”

“The people may be fake, but the machine does not seem fake,” he wondered.

Stressing that those apprehended may be suspected mules working for the real crooks in a cold office somewhere, arguing that “Those are the people we should expose, using the machine as the hot lead.”

Folayan also noted that the military was silent on the authenticity of NIN machine and how it was obtained.

“How did we know that the machine is not fake? It was not ascertained by the military authorities to be real?” he asked.

Certainly, some investigations were done before going to the press with the news, yet the veracity of the NIN machine was not disclosed.

Folayan maintained that NIMC needs to urgently investigate the NIN machine as recovered by the military and tell Nigerians its findings and probably learn a lesson from it for better management of the process moving forward.
