Anambra election 2021: 86 polling units will not vote says INEC - ITREALMS

A total of 86 units in Anambra State would not be voting in the forthcoming governorship elections slated for Saturday, November 6, 2021, reports
ITREALMS.

Anambra State, according to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has some 5,720 polling units.

Confirming this development in Abuja on Friday, INEC chairman informed ITREALMS in an address to that the 86 units without voters constitute about 1.5 per cent of total voters, bulk of which are from the newly delineated polling units.

He also said that the Commission will not invoke Section 42 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended to allot voters to the new polling units in order to minimize the disruptions that may occur.

As such, he said, election will not hold in the 86 units, but plans have been concluded to hold election in the remaining units.

For the moment, he told
ITREALMS that INEC in its avowed commitment to transparency, has compiled a comprehensive list of all the Polling Units without voters as well as those having under 50 registered voters.

“Copies of the list will be made available to all political parties at this meeting. The same document will also be uploaded to our website and social media platforms for public information,” he said.

As required by law, he said, INEC requested political parties to upload the names and other personal details of their Polling Agents to a dedicated portal at least two weeks to the election.

“These agents are your representatives at the polling units and the various collations centres. The deadline was 21st October 2021. While 17 out 18 political parties nominated their Polling Agents for all or a substantial number of the Polling Units and collation centres, one party failed to nominate a single agent for any Polling Unit or collation centre although it has a Governorship candidate and a running mate participating in the election,” he said.

INEC chairman expressed the hope that Anambra election, would have no major hiccups as they have advanced plans to ensure smooth exercise and that no grey area is not treated with the urgency it deserves. “We will also brief you about the assurances we received from the security agencies and the outcome of our interactive meeting with the Joint Committee of the National Assembly this week,” he said.
