The Lagos Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed shock at the sudden demise of her two prominent members, namely Ben Alaiya and Samuel Oluwalana, reports

The Lagos SWAN Chairman, Debo Oshundun, in a press statement available to ITREALMS by the Secretary, Bunmi Ogunyale on Wednesday, was quoted as saying that Alaiya and Oluwalana’s demise are huge losses to the pen pushing profession and the country at large.
Ogunyale quoted Oshundun as describing the deceased as committed leaders and professionals to the core.

“It’s sad to lose such notable members of the association at a time like this. In fact, Oga Ben as he’s fondly called was one of the poster boys of Lagos SWAN.

“He brought his experience to bear as the media officer of the AFCON 2013 winning Super Eagles.

“He gave his best while he was the spokesperson of the team with all dexterity. He made the job looked easy and was accessible to all and sundry.

“Late Alaiya will be remembered as one of the best media officers the Super Eagles has ever had.

“Oluwalana was also a great member of the association. He was one of our own that specializes in reporting racket sports and did it with enthusiasms.

”So sad, but let’s remember his families in our prayers at this difficult time. Let’s also pray for the repose of his soul,” he urged.

In their honour, the Lagos SWAN football team will wear black arm bands and also have a minute silence on Thursday's friendly against SWAN Selected at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Before his stint as the national team’s media officer, late Alaiya was the Chief Executive Officer/Editor-in-Chief at Sports day Newspapers.

He also worked at defunct Sunrise newspapers and National Interest to mention a few.

Alaiya died after a brief illness in the early hours of Wednesday.

Oluwalana also worked with Complete Sports and some other notable print media.

They are both survived by wife and children.
