Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Olanrewaju Afinni has set up an endowment for victims of #EndSARS protest that rocked state in the Lagos Island II constituency, reports
ITREALMS.

Speaking at the Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting held simultaneously in all the constituencies of the state with the theme “Post-COVID-19 Pandemic: The Challenges and Prospects” at the Christ Church Cathedral Primary School hall on Thursday, he said the Lagos Island II endowment fund would be used to cushion the effects of COVID-19 and #EndSARS protest which some hoodlums turned into looting spree.

At least, he told ITREALMS that each victim would anticipatedly assisted with about N150,000, especially those that got their shops and businesses looted by hoodlums.

This, he prayed would take effect on or before December 31, this year, so as to make certain victims rebounds by January 2021 with a new lease of life.

He stressed that this has become necessary because everyone was still coming out of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown which lasted for months when the #EndSARS and #EndPoliceBrutality protests took over and hitted the state in the latest wave and even spread across other states of the federation.

According to him, as an individual, he has very limited sources, hence, he beckons on corporate organisations in Lagos and the constituency specifically to join forces with him to ensure the burden of #EndSARS protest turned looting could be reduced to the barest minimum of pains and challenges for the citizenry.

The 9th Assembly in Lagos led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, he said, had on the wake of the #EndSARS protest addressed the protesters and immediately thereafter convened an emergency session to consider their demands, penultimate Friday, October 9, 2020.

The House, he also said, resolved among other things to call on President, General Muhammadu Buhari retired, to direct the Inspector-General of Police to proscribe the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and establish a new outfit which will be more efficient with code of conduct and rules of engagement clearly spelt-out.

This, Hon. Afinni said, would ensure that culpable officers of SARS at State and Federal levels would be punished in accordance with the extant law.

In addition, he said, the House resolved to call on the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State command to protect the protesters and ensure they are not molested; and stop the unwarranted molestation of our youth by operatives of SARS.

These resolutions, Hon. Afinni said, were conveyed to the Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and the President, emphasising that the Federal Government promptly adopted virtually all the resolutions of the Assembly.

While urging citizens to continue to support the government by performing their civic roles, he commended them for their resilience and ability to adapt to the ‘New Normal’ especially in the face of the changing socio-economic situation that has led to a number of new businesses such as the local production of safety health kits, nose masks, hand sanitizers, delivery services and others.

“Enterpreneurs are encouraged to be more innovative and crative in the face of this changing world situation,” he charged.

Further, Hon. Afinni reminded constituents to take advantage of his Constituency Office and submit their memoranda for this year on or before Friday, October 30, this year, so as to capture same in the next year’s budget.

“I am assuring you that the 9th Assembly would continue to do everything within its reach to bring governance closer to the people to enable participatory governance,” Afinni said.

The stakeholders meeting was attended by members of the constituent including religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim community as well as artisans, community leaders, party stalwarts, market women, youths and local government leaderships.
