PENGASSAN shuts down Nigeria, goes on strike despite faction

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has its strike has commenced Thursday despite clamour for postponement by a faction of NUPENG, reports ITRealms.

Spokesman of the group, Emmanuel Ojugbana, said chairmen and secretaries in its four zones and branches have advanced plans to make certain the country’s oil and gas industry operations and activities are shut down.

He insisted that the strike kicked off as planned on Thursday July 7, this year.

A faction of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) from the South-West led by  Mr Tokunbo Korodo said a meeting with representatives of the Federal Government, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday has been shifted till July 11.

ITRealms also reports that earlier, the leadership of PENGASSAN in a press statement Tuesday, July 5, urged union leaders in their various zones to mobilise members for a total strike by Thursday.

Ojugbana, reiterated that since the directive, PENGASSAN members have been meeting to fine-tune strategies towards the strike, with key officers holding their final meeting on Wednesday.

They also accused FG of purposefully not allowing efforts at resolving issues on the recent disengagement of some of their staff in some oil corporations as well as poor welfare of oil workers.

PENGASSAN further alleged that the Federal Government failed to honour negotiation meetings earlier set up on June 23rd and 30th respectively.

They, therefore, urging Nigerians and industry operators who would be affected by the action to show understanding, maintaining that industrial action was critical to the survival of the oil and gas industry.

As at the time of going to press, other affiliate union members have drummed support for the PENGASSAN strike.

These include the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Petroleum Products Marketing Companies (PPMC),  Petroleum Equalisation Fund (Monitoring Board) PEF (MB), National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), as well as major oil companies, labour and contract services companies, confirmed decision to join the strike.
