2011 elections: NCC disclaims report on call, SMS restriction

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Friday, disclaimed a public in one of the national dailies, saying the publication is mischievous and malicious.

Head, Media and Public Relations at NCC, Mr. Reuben Muoka in a press statement made available to ITRealms Online said that the front page story entitled “Polls: Restrictions on GSM Calls, Text Messages likely ... as Security Chiefs Operators Meet” was intended to cause disaffection among Nigerians at this period of general elections.

“The Commission described the story as mischievous, malicious and a misrepresentation intended to cause disaffection in the polity,” he said.

He decried the story, reiterated that this is came at a time when the NCC had advised all telecom network operators to ensure that their networks are at optimum performance to avoid any hitches in telecom services in the country during the elections.

“The Commission reiterates that all telecom networks will be up and running as normal and there will be no restrictions on any calls or text messages on any day either election day or not,” he said.

Muoka, however cautioned that telephone users and the general public are advised to desist from using ICT platforms like text and internet to disseminate false and malicious messages capable of causing disaffection and destabilizing the nation.

“The general public and the operators are advised to ignore the story and consider it as false,” he said.
