MobiTel debuts with 4G data, voice services

Mobitel Limited has debuted with the launch of its Fourth Generation (4G) broadband access for data and voice services, reports REMMY NWEKE.

With this launch, Mobitel is acclaimed first national 4G network operator in the country by optimising its 2.3 Gega Hertz (GHz) spectrum and using Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WWIMAX) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies.

Speaking at the launch in Lagos, the chief executive officer, MobiTel, Mr. Johnson Salako, said that they are deploying 4G-enabled broadband and voice services across the country, in partnership with leading global technology providers such as Vocaltec, Alvarion and DragonWave.

“Mobitel delivers best-in-class telecommunications services that make connections easier and smoother through leading-edge access devices,” he said.

According to him, Mobitel Limited sees itself as the network of the future, hence the launch with 4G, which is the first of its kind in the country.

He noted that Mobitel acquired a 2.3 GHz license from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in March 2010 and with the commercial launch, “we have become one of the first providers of real broadband in Nigeria.”

He explained that with speed of up to 2048 kilo bytes per second (Kbps) customers on its network, Mobitel’s 4G Access would now have the capability to transfer large amounts of data in seconds, listen to music and watch videos from internet websites comfortably.

“Mobitel’s 4G Access services are available using different access devices including indoor, outdoor and mobile units depending on requirements for individual, family or corporate usage,” he said.

Further, he explained that individual and home users could have access through devices on Mobitel’s 4G Access using plug and play tool, which require no end-user installation or set-up.

“The indoor access device for homes and small office use also delivers voice and Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) connectivity for multiple users providing potential cost savings to users,” he said.

Salako, equally said that Mobitel’s mission is to deliver the best customer experience in all aspects of telecommunication service delivery as Africa’s most successful 4G network.

He also said in order to reposition itself, Mobitel has appointed Ms Michele Scanlon as the Chief Commercial Officer, an indication that Mobitel would be launching leading edge devices and service packages that push the boundary in performance terms to deliver an enhanced experience to Mobitel customers.

Additionally, he said that Mobitel’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Tomi Davies, is worthy professional that would bring his experience to bear on the network.

Commenting, Davies said that they currently have coverage in Lagos and is working round the clock to extend to other cities.

“We have already started with coverage in Lagos which we expect to be fully 4G before year-end and the rest of Nigeria can expect to see Mobitel 4G Access delivered to them next year,” he said.

Chairman, Mobitel, Mr. Adeyemi Akisanya, reiterated that they have the best of network and would make a difference in the Nigeria’s telecommunications market.
