Celtel to commission N1.7bn dealers project

Celtel Nigeria has heightened plans to shower its dealers in the country, with sum of $15 million (about N1,799,400,000.00 billion) in a project to be launched soon.

This is coming as the telco also plans to upgrade its Short Messaging Service (SMS) facilities to avail smooth SMS delivery.

Chief Commercial Officer,, Celtel Nigeria, Mr. Michael Foley, gave this indication at the weekend in a chat with Champion Infotel, just as the network has re-launched its one-network scheme in Lagos.

Reacting to recent claims by the Association of Licensed Telecoms Distributors of Nigeria (ALTDON), that Celtel’s business policies has changed detrimentally, he said that Celtel would be commissioning dealers project by next quarter worth $15 million.

He also agreed that the telco’s business policies have changed, but insisted it was to enable provision of better services to its subscribers.

“Our policies have changed to serve our subscribers better,” he declared.

On the hiccups being experienced currently by some subscribers on Celtel network, Mr. Foley appealed for patience, assuring that the telco is not unaware of their plights, hence its planning to upgrade its SMS equipment.

“We’re going to upgrade our SMS infrastructure soon,” he asserted.

Mr. Foley equally said that Celtel has not received any court summon with regard to the threat by ALTDON to drag the telco to court.

Champion Infotel recalled that recently ALTDON stated its resolve to institute a court action, seeking for N10,000,000,000.00 billion damages as suffered due to the result of Celtel’s alleged fraudulent practices through change of its business policies without any recourse to ALTDON well-being.

National president, ALTDON, Dr. Ayo Ojo, who disclosed this at a press conference in Lagos, said they would be seeking redress for what he described as a breach of agreement concerning their benefits and deliberate policy of congesting the market, which in itself is “unwholesome and unhealthy competition.”

According to him, Celtel violation of earlier contract was evidenced in its manner of appointing dealers, and all sorts of unethical means of distribution of their products, reckless promotions, which more often than not, ends up having damaging effects on the consumers and the dealers precisely.
