MTN justifies Blackberry for prepaid subs

Leading Global System for Mobile communications and Third Generation (3G) licensee, MTN Nigeria, has justified the introduction of Blackberry Peal 8700g for prepaid subscribers.
The telco said that it’s aimed at putting those on that platform in the network ahead of their peers, just as this is the first of its kind in Africa, according to the General Manager, Trade Marketing at MTN Nigeria, Mr. Tunji Adeyinka.

He disclosed this at the weekend in Lagos, saying that in most developing countries, prepaid subscribers have outgrown their post-paid counterpart, especially in Africa and this kind of customers needs recognition despite their platform.

In addition, he said, most prepaid customers are expected to grow or are already emerging middle class and still want to have control over their airtime spending, hence they should not be ignored and in order to place them ahead of competition.

MTN, he said, had to avail them the goodies that come with its Blackberry package.

As said by him, MTN Nigeria, is the first telecom operator on the continent to unveil Blackberry for its prepaid and post-paid customers respectively.

Before now, he informed that most operators prefer to single out Blackberry package for post-paid customers only, but MTN Nigeria wants to carry every of its customers to their next level of endeavour, hence the concept of introducing it for both post-paid and prepaid subscribers.

He assured that the quality of Blackberry services for both post-paid and prepaid are the same, as it does not have any difference as long as the prepaid customer recharges the Blackberry account monthly at the cost of N5,000.

“We’re the first network to launch it for prepaid platform. This is because subscribers are beginning to tap into it,” he said, adding that there is also such offering for prepaid in United Kingdom and Europe, even as it could be activated at any MTN Service Centres and there is MTN websites and MTN customer care lines to assist any interest public.

He explained that the Blackberry Pearl is one of the smallest smart phones in the world and the first Blackberry handset to include a camera and multimedia capabilities.

He stressed that the Blackberry Pearl stands out with its elegant design and powerful technical features, with a full QWERTY keyboard whereas providing exceptional performance together with an intuitive user experience.

“Right now, no other network offers such full package as MTN in Nigeria,” he noted, emphasising that the Blackberry Enterprise Server rightly integrates with Microsoft Exchange, Novell GroupWise and IBM Lotus Domino even as it works with existing enterprise systems, to enable secure, push-based wireless access to email and other corporate data.

“The Blackberry Pearl features a 1.3 mega pixel camera with built-in flash and 5x digital zoom, affording users to snap a picture and instantly share it with friends and family by electronic mail via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) also known as Blackberry Messenger.

Photos, he said, could be set as caller identification images, and can be easily transferred between the handset and a computer using the included Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable.

As said by him, the Blackberry Pearl delivers exceptional phone quality with premium, easy-to-use phone features including intuitive call management features such as smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and call forwarding.

“It also features a speakerphone and Bluetooth 2.0 for use with hands-free headsets, car kits and other Bluetooth peripherals such as a Global Positioning Service (GPS) receiver. Synchronization over Bluetooth with the Blackberry Desktop Software is also supported,” Mr. Adeyinka said. The Blackberry 8700g delivers fast performance for a range of mobile applications including web browsing, application use and attachment viewing. It features a bright, high resolution LCD screen that supports more than 65,000 colours and delivers vivid graphics. It also incorporates an intelligent light-sensing technology that automatically adjusts the screen and keyboard lighting to provide best lighting in outdoor, indoor and dark environments.
