Badaru, Nweke takJACITAD swears in new

The Joint Action Committee on Information and Communication Technology Awareness and Development (JACITAD), recently held a swearing-in ceremony to herald a new era led by Mr. Shina Badaru-executive

The event which held on March 29 was a follow up to the general elections of JACITAD in Lagos on February 21, 2012, which saw to the emergence of 10-man executive team.

These include the Vice President, Mr. Remmy Nweke; Secretary-General, Francisca Nnanna; Emeka Aginam, the Communication Officer; Lucas Ajanaku, the Financial Secretary and Florence Onuegbu, the Welfare Officer.

Also elected in the new JACITAD leadership includes Afolabi Bukola Bridget to serve as Treasurer; Kunle Azeez, Assistant Secretary-General; Emma Elebeke as Chief Whip and Adline Atili as Assistant Financial Secretary.

In his response after the swearing-in of the latest exco, the new president, Mr. Badaru the group for the next two year would try to executive what he described as “JACITAD Spring,” which has the potential to take the organization to its place as a critical stakeholder in ICT industry in Nigeria, Africa and afar.

He assured that his administration tends to work with the vision of repositioning JACITAD, stressing “the key role that JACITAD has come to play as a unifying platform for the key constituency of ICT Journalism in Nigeria has at no other time in our history come into sharp focus with rising mobile telephony, upsurge in social media and the Internet and other ICTs.”

Today, he noted, ICTs have encompass every sector of the Nigerian economy placing increasingly dynamic roles on the practice and profession of ICT Journalism.

The growing Internet usage, mobile telephony, social media explosion, he pointed out, are all indication of new vistas, yet posing key threats to ICT Journalism.

“… But at the same time open new windows of opportunity for us as individual ICT Journalists and specialised ICT media organizations,” he said.

According to him, the current trends in the national and global ICT industry have now placed an urgent and compelling responsibility on JACITAD.

In order to achieve this vision, he said, JACITAD would be to form new partnerships across diverse sectors of the economy.

10 commandments for transforming green economy via broadband

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has outlined 10 steps toward transforming green economy via broadband.

The latest report from the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, The Broadband Bridge: Linking ICT with Climate Action for a Low Carbon Economy, under the aegis of ITU highlighted 10 recommendations to enable Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to accelerate global progress towards a low-carbon economy.

The report, ITRealms Online reliably gathered is the result of work conducted by the Broadband Commission Working Group on Climate Change, chaired by Hans Vestberg, President and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ericsson.

The report scheduled for unveiling April 2, this year in Ohrid, Macedonia at the 5th meeting of the Commission, according to the Chief, Media Relations and Public Information, ITU, Ms Sarah Parkes, raises awareness about the pivotal role that ICT and broadband could play in helping to create a low carbon economy of the future.

In addition, it would identify best practices; express the views of leaders, and outlining clear recommendations for policy makers.

She noted that the report emphasized on kind of transformative solutions that are enabled by broadband and provides practical examples of how broadband could contribute to reducing greenhouse gasses (GHGs).

Additionally, the report highlighted how to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and promoting resource efficiency and concludes with 10 recommendations for policy makers and global leaders to hasten and strengthen the ability of ICT and broadband to accelerate global progress towards the low-carbon economy.

She disclosed that the full report, a 1-page highlight document, and a video interview with Working Group on Climate Change Chairman Hans Vestberg and Dr Hamadoun Touré (Secretary-General, ITU) are available to media only.
